Frieya Marie Lauman, 60, died Sept. 28 at her home in Summerville.

A celebration of life will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of La Grande with Pastor Wayne Pickens officiating. The viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., La Grande.

Mrs. Lauman was born Jan. 11, 1941, in Seattle to William Gordon and Miscella Kemp Simpson. She moved to Salem when she was 5 and to Aumsville two years later.

She married Jimmie Lauman on Dec. 16, 1961. They lived for two years in Clarksville, Tenn., and then returned to Oregon.

Mrs. Lauman drove a school bus for the Imbler School District for 10 years until cancer forced her to retire.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and a care group Bible study in Summerville.

She enjoyed camping, fishing and horseback riding. She will be remembered for her love of children, family members said.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Christy Lauman of Looking Glass; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and John Sanders of La Grande; her father, of Boring; sisters, Elizabeth Myers of Bend and Patricia Osborn of Redmond; brothers, Steve Simpson of Boring and Guy Simpson of Wasilla, Alaska; seven grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Clara Ann Scott, 86, of Enterprise, died Sept. 29 at Wallowa Valley Care Center.

A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Katherine Catholic Church with the Rev. Peter Fernando officiating. Burial will be in Enterprise Cemetery.

Mrs. Scott was born March 15, 1915, to Rochus and Francisca Hiesler Wagner in Logan County, North Dakota. She married Arnold G. Scott on June 29, 1935, in Lane County. He died on Jan. 25, 2000. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Katherine Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon McAuliffe of Enterprise; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and four sisters, Elizabeth Johs of Bismark, N.D., Julia Wale of Ipswich, S.D., Frances Wagner of Daly City, Calif., and Eleanor Guthrie of Lake Oswego.

Keith Lee Bobbin Young, 74, died Sept. 29 at his home following a brief illness. He was a lifetime resident of La Grande.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thurs-day at the Island City Cemetery, with the Rev. Norman Shrumm of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. A gathering for family and friends will follow at the home of Mark and Peggy Lanman.

Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande.

Mr. Young was born Oct. 3, 1926, to Walter and Effie Martin Young in La Grande.

He married Patricia Wilson on Feb. 10, 1950, in La Grande.

He was a member of the La Grande High School Class of 1944. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.

He owned Keith Young Logging until retiring two years ago.

He received many merit awards from the Forest Service and other organizations over the years for his work in forestry.

Mr. Young enjoyed being with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife; children, Judy and Tom McCabe of Eagle, Idaho, Debbie and Bud Calkins of Boise, Peggy and Mark Lanman of La Grande, Sharon Young of Boise, Susie and Chuck Evans of Homedale, Idaho, Wayne Young of La Grande and Bruce and Linn Young of Heppner; a sister, Nadine Rugg of La Grande; and other relatives.

He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren; one great-grandson and six step-great-grandchildren.

An infant daughter, Pamela Jean Young, and brothers Noland and Richard Young died earlier.

Janice C. Johnson, 57, of La Grande, died Sept. 30 at her home. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m Saturday at Grandview Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Johnson was born Oct. 21, 1943, to Clarence Bull and Myrtle Flett Brown in The Dalles. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1961 and married Doug D. Johnson in July 1971 in Reno, Nev. She worked as a waitress at The Wrangler, Tropidara and the truck stop. She was a member of the Elgin Christian Church, where she played the piano. She enjoyed working in her yard, spending time with her family and her dogs, yard sales, fishing and working crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her husband of La Grande, a son and daughter-in-law, Clarence and Larianne Stephens of Elgin, and one grandson.

Laura Young, 94, of Cove, died Oct. 2 at a local care center. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m Saturday at the Cove Cemetery. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Young was born March 7, 1907, to George and Bessie Mae Chadwick Ackerman in New Plymouth, Idaho. She attended Oregon State University and married Fred Young on Jan. 1, 1927, in Baker City. The couple lived in Butte, Mont., Sumpter and Baker City before moving in 1956 to La Grande, where Mr. Young was city manager. They also lived in Longview, Wash., where he was manager of the Columbia Empire Fair. Mrs. Young worked as a bookkeeper for Boise Cascade and at Pope & Talbot. After their retirement, the couple moved to Cove, and more recently she moved to the Grande Ronde Retirement Residence in La Grande. She was a gifted pianist and served on the board of the Grande Ronde Symphony Orchestra. She was a member of many civic organizations, and a member of PEO chapters in La Grande and Baker City and served as president of Chapter I of PEO in La Grande.

Survivors include her children, Paul Young of Idyllwild, Calif., Gordon Young of Portland, and Louise Van Schoonhoven of Cove, seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Her husband and a daughter, Kay Gildersleeve, died earlier.

Marie Alice Ash, 74, formerly of Union County, died Saturday at her home in Milton-Freewater.

Jean Williams

Formerly of La Grande

Jean Williams, a registered nurse who worked at Grande Ronde Hospital from 1980-1988, died of ovarian cancer on Sept. 7 at her home in Vancouver, Wash. She was 59.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 20 at the First Unitarian Church, 1011 S.W. 12th Ave., Portland. Anyone who would like further information about the service may phone Ms. Williams daughter, Andrea Williams, at 414-581-7880.

Ms. Williams was born July 3, 1942, in Seattle to Margaret and Frank Boettiger.

She moved to La Grande in 1978, where she lived until moving to the Portland area in 1988. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for the 10 years she lived in La Grande.

She enjoyed her family, friends, cats and many hobbies, including gardening, traveling, spending time at the ocean and writing.

Survivors include her mother, now of Vancouver, Wash.; a sister Frances Mitchell of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter, Andrea of Milwaukee, Wis.; and her son, Brad Williams of Portland.

A younger sister, Mary Ann Ramirez, died earlier.

Sharon Kay Mulvany died Oct. 8 in Gresham. She had been a long-time resident of Union. She was 55.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Union.

She was born Dec. 28, 1945, to Warren and Grace George Linville in Long Beach, Calif.

She had lived in Oregon since 1974.

She graduated from Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif., in 1969 with a degree in education. She had been a teacher for a number of years.

Among other interests, she was an avid gardener.

She is survived by her two children, Megan Beth Mulvany of Baltimore, Md., and Logan Linville Mulvany of Portland; her father of Morro Bay, Calif., and her sister, Michaele Ricker of Running Springs, Calif.

Mrs. Ash was born April 26, 1927, to Neil Price and Georgia R. Chadwick Kight in Cove. She attended Frosty School and graduated from Cove High School. She attended Eastern Oregon College for two years and married William Lewis Ash on June 16, 1947, at the Cove Methodist Church. The couple lived in Union. She worked at Valley View Manor for several years before moving to Milton-Freewater in 1986. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Union where she was primary stake secretary for many years. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and playing the organ.

Survivors include her husband of Milton-Freewater, children and their spouses, Larry and Shirley Ash of Union, Helen and Frank Blake of La Grande, Rose and Rob Reece of Union and Shirley Hinojos of Portland, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a sister, Betty Hall of Boise, and other relatives. Three grandchildren, a brother and a niece died earlier.

Vanetta Lea McVey, 67, of Elgin, died Sept. 21 at her home. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Elgin Christian Church. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McVey was born Oct. 27, 1933, to Clifford L. and Bertha Ethel Costner Marteney in Liberal, Kan. She married Raymond McVey on Sept. 5, 1950, in Clayton, N.M. The couple moved to Alicel in 1953 and the following year she graduated from La Grande High School. They moved to Boise in 1958 and to Winchester, Idaho, in 1963 before settling in Elgin in 1965. After her children graduated from school Mrs. McVey graduated from the La Grande School of Business. She worked as a medical transcriptionist at the Elgin Medical Clinic until 1990 when her husband retired from Boise Cascade. They moved into Elgin a year ago. She enjoyed Bible study, oil painting, gardening, genealogy and spending time with her family and friends. She led a number of 4-H clubs from 1968 to 1973 and was a member of the Elgin Christian Church where she taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school.

Survivors include her husband of Elgin, children, Julia Manley of La Grande, Diana Croucher of Elgin, Kayla Durfee of Athena, and Tim McVey of Nashville, Tenn., 11 grandchildren, and two sisters, Retta Altmiller of Searcy, Ark., and Veva Clement of Belle, Mo. A son, Michael Dean McVey, and her parents died earlier.

Dick Harold Miller, 78, of Livingston, Mont., and formerly of La Grande and Union, died Sept. 30. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mr. Miller was born Jan. 26, 1923, to John and Mable Miller in Wilder, Idaho. He married Ellen Coburn on Jan. 8, 1964, in Sisters.

The couple lived in Union and La Grande where he drove a taxi for many years. After his wifes death in 1991, he moved to Livingston to be near family. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, canning and being with his family.

Survivors include his step-children, William Coburn of Vancouver, Wash., Mary Ausk of La Grande, James Miller of Portland, and Bonnie Bowles and Connie Barrios, both of Livingston, 18 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, a sister, Helen McDonald of Eugene, and other relatives.

A great-granddaughter and a sister all died earlier.

Velma Edwards, 79, of La Grande, died Oct. 9 at her home. A celebration of life will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Summerville Cemetery.

Mrs. Edwards was born April 10, 1922, to Raymond M. and Margaret Parker Jenkins in Cochise, Ariz. She married Harry Edwards Jr. on March 12, 1951, in Boise. She was a member of the VFW auxiliary, the Methodist Church and the lay academy. She was also a member of the wife caregivers support group. She enjoyed gardening, decorating cakes and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her children, Louanne J. McDonald of Summerville, Wayne E. Edwards of Rawlins, Wyo., Harriet L. Edwards of Los Angeles, and Charlene K. Edwards of La Grande; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and other relatives. Her husband died earlier.

Reba A. Laird, 84, of La Grande, died Oct. 8 at Grande Ronde Hospital. At her request there will be no public service.

Mrs. Laird was born Oct. 28, 1916, to Joseph T. and Verda Ohms Gray in Alicel. She graduated from La Grande High School in 1933, and on Sept. 13, 1933, she married Warren C. Jiggs Laird in Walla Walla. The couple owned and operated Phillips Petroleum for many years where she was the bookkeeper. She was a member of the La Grande Country Club, the Lady Elks and the Hope Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed golf, cooking and being with her family.

Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Jones of La Grande; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Laird of La Grande; four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and other relatives. Her husband, a son, Norman Laird, and two sisters, Maiva Spray McFerran and LaNeta Buchanan, all died earlier.

John Elmer Sarman, 84, of Union, died Oct. 8 at Grande Ronde Hospital.

Mr. Sarman was born April 2, 1917, to Fred W. and Marie Seaman Sarman in Gardnerville, Nev.

He attended school at Coleville, Calif., and served in the Army during World War II. He married Rita Mae Cummings on Dec. 30, 1945, in Virginia City, Nev.

The couple moved to Union in 1967 where he worked at the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station and the Terry Trailers manufacturing plant until his retirement in 1980.

Survivors include his wife of Union, children and their spouses, Les and Jonnie Sarman of Nampa, Idaho, Peggy and Charlie Short of Cove, Kathy and Keith Montgomery of Union, Margie and Ken Wilde of Island City, Ron and Brenda Sarman of Fordyce, Ariz., Janeen and Olen Nave of Powell, Wyo., 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, a brother, Edwin Sarman of Gardnerville, and a sister, Eva Arigoni of Carson City, Nev.

Mrs. Larsen was born Aug. 13, 1954, to James and Betty Christopher in Lynnwood, Calif. She lived in La Grande for about 10 years and attended Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church before moving to Springfield in 1992. She was a homemaker and volunteered at the animal shelter. She loved animals and enjoyed crafts, gardening, antiques and spending time with her family.

Survivors include a daughter, Laura Larsen of Springfield, and a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Sharon Andrews of Eugene, two grandchildren, a sister, Kerrin Kettler of Salem, and other relatives. Her parents and two sisters, Marsha and Jan, died earlier.

Ramon Harold Tigger Loos, 69, of White Salmon, Wash., and formerly of La Grande, died Oct. 8. A memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. Oct. 19 at the First Christian Church in Hermiston. Burial will be at Island City Cemetery. Gardner Funeral Home of White Salmon was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Loos was born March 9, 1932, to Henry George and Ruby Shreckhise Loos in Pendleton. He attended school in La Grande and graduated from high school in Grangeville, Idaho. He served in the Navy during the Korean War and married Judith Dailey. He worked as a barber in Hermiston for 26 years. He enjoyed fishing, mechanics, thunderstorms, sunsets, gardening and being with family and friends. After he divorced, he married Carolynn Rowland.

Survivors include his wife of White Salmon, four children, three step-children, 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a brother, David Loos of Vancouver, Wash., and other relatives. Two sisters and three brothers died earlier.

Lewis Max Walker

Union and formerly of Wallowa County

Lewis Max Walker, 86, of Union and formerly of Wallowa County, died Oct. 8 in La Grande. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise. Burial will follow at Alder Slope Cemetery.

Mr. Walker was born Jan. 24, 1915, to Jesse Dee and Ruby Hazel Millhollen Walker near Corvallis. He graduated from Enterprise High School and in 1938 married Marcel Lathrop. The couple farmed at Day Ridge, Paradise and Lost Prairie until 1954 when they moved to Peck, Idaho, where he was president of the Idaho Outfitters and Guides, vice president of the Idaho Cattlemans Association and served on the Columbia Basin Development League. He operated a hunting camp on the North Fork of the Clearwater River. In 1976 the family moved to Alder Slope where he was one of the founders of the Hells Canyon Mule Days and was active in the Wallowa County Sheriffs search and rescue program. The family moved to a farm near Union in 1989 where he was active in the Blue Mountain Back County Horsemen. He was an expert at shoeing horses and mules and loved to hunt, fish, hike and camp. Telling hunting stories was his favorite pastime.

Survivors include his wife of Union, children, Dee Walker of Alexandria, Va., Dick Walker of Union, Don Walker of Kettle Falls, Wash., and Dianne Walker-Taylor of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Three brothers, Ralph, Keith and Wingert all died earlier.

Dorothy Labeth Bentley, 80, of La Grande and formerly of Enterprise, died Sept. 30 at a local care center. A celebration of life is planned later at Twin Firs Retirement Residence with Pastor Wilfred Nitz officiating. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bentley was born Jan. 7, 1921, to Charles and Sarah Buffington Bay in Homedale, Idaho. In 1985 she moved to Enterprise, where she was a resident of the Pioneer Guest Home. She was a resident of the Twin Firs in La Grande for the past 10 years. She enjoyed listening to music, singing, playing bingo and working on crafts.

Survivors include three sons and two daughters. The staff and her friends at Twin Firs were her family for many years.

Theda Mae Matthews

Theda Mae Matthews, 83, of La Grande, died Oct. 9 at St. Marys Medical Center in Walla Walla. There will be a private family service. Herring Groseclose Funeral Home in Walla Walla is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Matthews was born July 6, 1918, to Edith Anderson in Amanda, Ohio. She graduated from high school in Circleville, Ohio, and married John W. Matthews in 1941 in Columbus, Ohio.

She was a homemaker and moved to Union County five years ago. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her sons and their wives, John and Susie Matthews of Watsonville, Calif., Dr. James and Linda Matthews of Summerville, and William Matthews of Santa Barbara, Calif.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and other relatives. Her husband and five brothers and sisters all died earlier.

Mark Miezio

Toledo

Mark Miezio, 45, of Toledo, died Oct. 9 after a long illness at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Newport. Viewing will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Bateman Funeral Home.

Mr. Miezio was born Dec. 23, 1955, to Robert and Connie Miezio in Chicago. He attended the University of Iowa and graduated from Oregon Institute of Technology in 1988 with a degree in electronic engineering. He married Karen Ritchey on June 11, 1988, in Summerville and worked for General Electric as a field engineer until 1995, when he went to work for Georgia-Pacific Corp. where he was a process control engineer. He enjoyed fishing and hunting trips to Union and Wallowa counties, golfing, home brewing and building things with his hands. He was also an organ donor.

Survivors include his wife and daughters, Kelli and Kylie, all of Toledo; his parents of Elk Grove Village, Ill.; his wifes parents, Jim and Waynette Ritchey of La Grande; a brother, Greg Miezio of North Aurora, Ill.; two sisters, Kim Ruud of Elk Grove Village and Jodi Zeoli of Mundelein, Ill.; and other relatives.
