Joyce Bacon

Enterprise

Joyce Arlene Bacon, 64, formerly of Enterprise, died Nov. 24 at her sisters home in Milton-Freewater.

A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the Enterprise Cemetery.

Mrs. Bacon was born Aug. 28, 1937, in Enterprise to Alvin and Margaret Musty Davis. She graduated from Enterprise High School and married Harold Glen Bacon on Sept. 9, 1955, in Enterprise. He died in 1975.

She was a secretary for more than 20 years for one company and lived in Los Angeles and Phoenix. She retired in July because of ill health and moved to Milton-Freewater in October to be near family.

She was active in youth baseball and football. She enjoyed watching baseball, reading, collecting pigs, and knitting sweaters for family members, especially babies. Her basset hound, D.J., was her pride and joy, family members said.

She is survived by a son, Brook Bacon of Granada Hills, Calif.; daughter, Jolene McGalliard of Acton, Calif.; her mother of Milton-Freewater; a sister, Judith Parr of Milton-Freewater; and a grandson. Her husband died in 1975, and a son, Kenneth, died in 1978.

Rae Elma Mahanna

Rae Elma Mahanna, 91, a life-long resident of Wallowa, died Nov. 23 at a care center in College Place, Wash.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Wallowa with Kay Garver officiating.

Burial will be in Bramlet Cemetery in Wallowa.

She was born in Wallowa on April 20, 1910, to Ray Martin Schaeffer and Anna White Schaeffer. She married Orie Otis Mahanna on June 25, 1931, in Ogden, Utah. He died on April 15, 1988.

She was a member of the Wallowa United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Larry of Tollgate and Lynn of Wallowa; two daughters, Bonita Medley of Seattle and Beverly Martin of Wallowa; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A granddaughter died earlier.

Shirley Stevens

Shirley Ann Stevens, 65, of La Grande, died Nov. 23 at her home. A celebration of life will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at Canby Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dana Gunter officiating. Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in Canby. Burial will follow at Zion Memorial Park in Canby.

Mrs. Stevens was born April 12, 1936, to Delbert A. and Christie Bell Zumwalt Shelley. She married Arthur Stevens Jr. on May 8, 1953, in Oregon City and lived in Molalla and Marcum before moving to La Grande in June to be near family. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, gardening, camping, cooking and being outdoors.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Cheryl and Chester Gunter and Rick and Sandy Stevens, all of La Grande, and Jeff Stevens and Michelle Sprouffske of Oregon City; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Mert Stewart and Jean Shelley of Warrenton. Her husband, a son, Gus Stevens, a sister, Janet Huebner, and two brothers, Norman and George Shelley, all died earlier.

Miscal Mary Mickey Crader, 80, of Salt Lake City and formerly of La Grande, died Nov. 24. A service will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., with burial following at Summerville Cemetery. Viewing will be from 5 to 7 tonight. The family will be present to receive friends.

Mrs. Crader was born Feb. 27, 1921, to Daniel and Mary Murchison in Summerville. She married Ronald Buck Crader, who died earlier.

Survivors include her children, Sharon Cross of Montero, Calif., Terry Crader of Salt Lake City, and Sandra Saunders of Yorktown, Texas; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister Mildred Byron of Baker City; and other relatives.

Virgil Winters

Virgil Winters, 92, of Cove, died Nov. 26 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bollman Funeral Home in Enterprise with Jerry Radaeke officiating. Burial will be at the Enterprise Cemetery.

Mr. Winters was born Sept. 14, 1909, to James Ross Winters and Anna Mae Beeman Winters in Paradise. He was a sheepherder.

Survivors include his children, Gary Winters of Eugene, Butch Winters, Verna Rhodes, Corliss Boner, all of Enterprise, and Linda LaRue of Ione; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, his sisters, Bertha Prince of Union, Wilma Courtney of Lostine, Bessie Fleser of Enterprise, Rena Clark of Pendleton and Alta Anderson of Estacada; and his brothers, Percy Winters of Joseph and Buck Winters of Hermiston. Five sisters, Pearl, Violet, Leatha, Sylvia and Armetta, a brother, Bill,

and a grandson, Ronald, all died earlier.

Dannis LaVern Miller, 87, of La Grande, died Nov. 25 at a local care center. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley with the Rev. Gary Hood of the Pioneer Park Church of God officiating. A private burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mr. Miller was born Nov. 6, 1914, to Daniel and Katie Forsyth Miller at Colfax, Wash. He graduated from La Grande High School in 1933 and joined his father in Millers Cabinet Shop. He became the owner after his father died, and he retired in the early 1980s. He married Lawanna Winburn on June 7, 1936, and after her death in 1943 he married Mildred Ziegler on June 4, 1948. He was a member of the Church of God and Gideons International.

Survivors include his wife of La Grande; children, Orville Miller of La Grande, LaVern Miller of Tulsa, Okla., Kerry Miller of Chillawack, British Columbia, Canada, Dannis Miller of Albany and Jana Winn of Cove; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Oakley Miller of Portland; and a sister, Leola Miller of La Grande. A younger sister, Marcia Braun, died earlier.

Carl Stoddard

Carl Dean Stoddard, 72, of Troutdale and formerly of Union, died Nov. 26 at a care center. At his request there will be no public service.

Mr. Stoddard was born July 16, 1929, to Carl Nibley and Alma Heryford Stoddard in Cove. He served in the Navy during World War II and worked as a chef in various places until he retired and moved to Union in 1981. In 1997 he moved to Troutdale. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed fishing, hunting, mushrooming and having coffee with his friends.

Survivors include his children, Jackie Collier of Union, Patty Schiavone of Post Falls, Idaho, Pam Shammel of Portland, Ruth Smart of Boise, Carol Benally of White Cloud, Kan., Tony Stoddard of Anniston, Ala., Renee Marshall of Laurel, Mont., Don Rouse of Alaska, and Dianne Vinion of Missoula, Mont.; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; his brothers, Don Stoddard of Salem and Richard Stoddard of Weiser, Idaho; and other relatives. A son, Robert Stoddard, died earlier.

Elma Jean Eckley

La Grande

A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley for Elma Jean Eckley, who died Nov. 27 at Grande Ronde Hospital. She was 95.

Rev. Norman Shrumm of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Private burial will be at the Summerville cemetery.

Mrs. Eckley was born July 25, 1906, to Benjamin and Lou Joycox Owsley in Colfax, Wash. She moved with her family to La Grande when she was a child.

She graduated from La Grande High School.

She married Victor Eckley in La Grande on Nov. 11, 1925. She retired after many years as a bookkeeper for Trotters Mens Wear.

Mrs. Eckley was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Hope Chapter 13 of the Order of Eastern Star and the Daughters of the Nile.

She enjoyed crocheting, and loved to play bingo and visiting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Ronald Daniel of Enterprise; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

Her husband died in 1990, and three sisters, three brothers and two nephews died earlier.

Robert H. Folks, 89, of La Grande, died Nov. 25 at a local care center. A memorial service will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall in Battle Ground, Wash., with Robert Card officiating. Loveland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Folks was born Feb. 21, 1912, to Harry and Ora Shephard Folks in Topeka, Kan. He married Ethel Grace Skinner in July 1939 in Kansas. She died in 1983. He was a member of the Jehovahs Witnesses.

Survivors include a son, Bruce Folks of La Grande; a daughter, Roberta Johnson of Brush Prairie, Wash.; one grandchild; and other relatives.

Daniel Henley

La Grande

Daniel Scott Henley, 47, of La Grande died Nov. 26 at his home after a short illness.

Mr. Henley was born Jan. 8, 1954, to Robert Allen and Donna Lee Askew Henley in Los Angeles. He married Sarah Ann Nordbye on Aug. 18, 1973, in Galt, Calif.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on cars and motorcycles.

He was known for stopping to help strangers.

Survivors include his wife of La Grande; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Ed Galjour of La Grande; a son, Timothy Henley of Vancouver, Wash.; two grandchildren; three sisters, Debbie Todd, Susan Henley and Pam Henley, and a brother, Russell Henley, all of Galt; and other relatives.

Robert Pannell

Formerly of La Grande

1921-2001

Robert Grady Pannell, 80, of Astoria and a former managing editor at The Observer, died Nov. 23 in Portland.

Mr. Pannell was born in 1921 to Robert Emmett and Gaynell Whitaker Pannell in Scott County, Va. He attended school in Strasburg and at the Tennessee Military Institute. He served in the Army during World War II and married Ann Allen Birdwell. He pitched in the minor leagues for the Cincinnati Reds and spent 37 years as a journalist. He was managing editor of the La Grande Evening Observer from 1958 to 1967 and retired in 1983 after 16 years as sports editor of the Daily Astorian.

Survivors include his children, Robert G. Pannell Jr. of Bowie, Md., Joseph Pannell of Millersville, Pa., David Pannell of Washington, D.C., Elizabeth Pannell of Portland, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His wife died earlier.

Sherry Rimbey

Formerly of La Grande

1944-2001

Sherry Lorraine Rimbey, 57, of Reedsport and formerly of La Grande, died Nov. 27 at her home. A memorial service was held today at Dunes Memorial Chapel in Reedsport.

Mrs. Rimbey was born June 23, 1944, to Earl and Ellen Grovier Cottom in Salt Lake City. She married Gerald Rimbey on June 23, 1962, in The Dalles. She worked for the state of Oregon as a corrections officer and earned many honors. In October she received an award for saving a womans life. She was an accomplished outdoorswoman and enjoyed fishing, archery hunting, camp cooking and art. She won many archery awards.

Survivors include her husband; two stepdaughters, Shirley Cook and Pauline Weaver; five grandchildren; two sisters, Beverly Monahan and Barbara Cottom; a brother, James Cottom; and other relatives.

Her parents died earlier.

Arthur Smith

Formerly of Troy

1918-2001

Arthur Smith, 83, of Monmouth and formerly of Troy, died Nov. 28 at his home. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Monmouth. Viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Farnstrom Mortuary, 410 Monmouth St., in Independence. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Cemetery in La Grande.

Mr. Smith was born April 1, 1918, to LeRoy and Lillie Boston Smith in Troy. He married Daisy Smith on Dec. 29, 1938. He worked as a gold miner and logger in Eastern Oregon and worked for Superior Tire Factory in Salem before retiring to his farm in Buena Vista. He was a member of the LDS church and served a mission in Houston.

He enjoyed rocks.

Survivors include his wife, Daisy of Monmouth; a son, Arthur M. Smith of West Linn; a daughter, Barbara Hanson of Klamath Falls; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and two brothers and a sister, all of Eastern Oregon.

A son, John, and six brothers and sisters died earlier.

Carrie Ann Garner, 18, of Camas, Wash., and formerly of La Grande, died Nov. 28 at Doernbecher Childrens Hospital in Portland after a long illness. The funeral will be held today at the Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville, Idaho. Burial will follow at Prairie View Cemetery in Grangeville.

Miss Garner was born Sept. 11, 1983, to Dennis and Debbie Wicks Garner in Grangeville. She lived in Belgrade, Mont., until she moved to La Grande in 1995, and later Pendleton and Camas. She was a junior at Camas High School. She enjoyed watching airplanes take off and land, watching Wheel of Fortune on TV, and liked to sign the ABCs with anyone willing.

Survivors include her parents, Dennis and Diane Garner of Belgrade, and Debbie and Ken Fairley of Camas; a brother, Jeff Garner and two sisters, Nichole Steiner and Ashley Garner, all of Belgrade; her grandparents, Claudia and Bart Hepburn, and Daphne Garner, all of Grangeville; and other relatives. Her grandfathers, Marvin Garner and Garnet Wicks, both died earlier.

Carole Joyce Jarvis, 58, of Dayton and formerly of Summerville died Nov. 28 in Newberg. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at the Summerville Cemetery Chapel with Pastor Bill Miller officiating. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jarvis was born Oct. 28, 1943, to Carl and Wanda Keith Hedin in Maple Valley, Wash. She grew up and attended school in Vale and attended Eastern Oregon University. On June 15, 1963, she married Joseph Jarvis in Vale. The couple farmed in Summerville for 23 years before moving to Newberg in 1985 and to Dayton in 1991. She was a member and past matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Elgin and past noble grand of the Jewel Rebekah Lodge in Summerville. She enjoyed yard sales, collecting, gardening and traveling.

Survivors include her husband of Dayton; her parents of Salem; her children and their spouses, Wes Jarvis, and Patti and Joe Hansen, all of Plano, Texas; a brother, Keith Hedin of Portland; a sister, Barbara Schmidt of Yakima, Wash.; and other relatives.

June Smith, 79, of Summerville died Nov. 29 at a local care center. At her request there will be no public service.

Mrs. Smith was born June 22, 1922, to George and Flora Arcand in Chicago. She married John Smith on April 22, 1950, in Chicago. The couple lived and traveled all over the country, and in July they settled in Summerville to be near family.

Survivors include her husband of Summerville; children, Linda Muir of Summerville, Jackie Weldon of Colorado Springs, Colo., and John Smith III; four grandchildren; a brother, William Arcand of Largo, Fla.; and other relatives.
