La Grande

Myrtle Galloway, 87, of La Grande died Sunday at Grande Ronde Hospital.

Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. A full obituary will be published later.

Gail Kuchler

La Grande

1917-2002

Gail Iola Kuchler, 84, a lifetime resident of Union County, died Jan. 18 at her home in La Grande.

A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley with Pastor Frank Humber of the Summerville Baptist Church officiating. Committal and interment will follow at the Summerville Cemetery.

Mrs. Kuchler was born on April 1, 1917, to William and Mabel (Johnston) Bull in Summerville. She attended Imbler schools and in December 1937 she married Windsor Kuchler in La Grande.

Mrs. Kuchler was known for her kindness to everyone who came in contact with her. She enjoyed painting, rock collecting, flowers and fishing. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Windsor of La Grande; daughter and son-in-law, Marian and Bobby Stuckman of Wallowa; son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. and Linda Kuchler of La Grande; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister Eileen May Johnson of La Grande and other relatives and friends.

Her twin brother, Garth Anthony Bull died earlier.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Special Olympics in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Edwin Huff

La Grande

1923 -2002

Edwin Albert Huff, a lifetime resident of La Grande and former operator of a local grocery store, died Jan. 18 at a local care center. He was 78.

A service was scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Daniels Chapel of the Valley with Sally Weins officiating. A fraternal service will be under the auspices of the La Grande Elks Lodge. Burial will be at the Grandview Cemetery.

In 1948, Mr. Huff and Ken Awmiller bought and operated H&H Grocery Store, which was across the street from Riveria Elementary School. He also delivered Wonder Bread for more than 30 years. Mr. Huff was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge and a member of the Eagles Lodge.

He enjoyed sports of all kinds, family members said.

Mr. Huff was born March 6, 1923, to Lyman and Gladys Neukirchner Huff at his grandmothers house in La Grande.

He married Ella May Keown on Aug. 7, 1950, in Lewiston, Idaho. She survives him.

Other survivors include two daughters, Sharon Cheney of Gooding, Idaho, and Joyce Randolph of Fairview; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Marian Huff of Woodburn; and other relatives.

Lois I. Doud

Wallowa

1924 -2002

Lois Doud of Wallowa died Jan. 13 at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. She was 77.

A funeral service was scheduled for today at Bollman Funeral Home, with private burial at the Enterprise Cemetery.

She was born Jan. 16, 1924, at Dacoma, Okla., to Burtis and Esther Lang Polson.

She married Lester Doud on Oct. 18, 1977, at Alva Okla.

She is survived by two brothers, Bruce and his wife, Jeanne Polson of Olean, N.Y., and Marvin and his wife, Frances Polson, of Perkins, Okla.; sisters, Avonna Polson of LaMars, Iowa, and Maude Ruth and her husband Donald Watson of Minneapolis; step-children Willard Doud of La Grande, Stanley Doud of Portland, Dean Doud of Pendleton, Twyla Carper of Milton-Freewater, Janice and Ron Bennett of Wallowa, Jolayna Lewis of Wallowa; 13 step-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, 26 nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise 97828.

MaryLee Hay

MaryLee Hay, 73, of Enterprise died Saturday at St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bollman Funeral Home followed by private interment of cremains at the Enterprise Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice in her name through Bollman Funeral Home.

Forrest Day

Formerly of La Grande

Forrest Glen Day, 75, of Oklahoma and formerly of La Grande, died Monday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Muskogee, Okla. Daniels Chapel of the Valley of La Grande is in charge of arrangements.

Velma Boylen

Formerly of La Grande

1911-2002

Velma Charlton Boylen, 90, of Nehalem and formerly of La Grande, died Jan. 22 at her home. At her request there will be no service.

Mrs. Boylen was born Nov. 12, 1911, to James Kyle and Maude Cochran Charlton in Needy. She lived most of her life in La Grande, graduating from La Grande High School in 1929 and Eastern Oregon Normal School in 1933. She taught in Jacksonville, Gilchrist, Marshfield and La Grande. In 1938 she married Vard LaFaun Boylen in Walla Walla. In 1943 the couple returned to La Grande where he worked for the railroad. After retirement they moved to Nehalem.

Survivors include a son, Kyle Boylen of Elgin; a daughter, Karen DuPuis of Maupin; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ivey Herchenhein of Manzanita. Her husband and a sister, Inez Smith, died earlier.

Myrtle Galloway

La Grande

Myrtle M. Myrl Galloway, 87, of La Grande, died Jan. 20 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., with Father Hank Albrecht of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church officiating. Viewing will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday and burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Bay City.

Mrs. Galloway was born Jan. 19, 1915, to Charles and Leila Loomis in Springborough, Ohio. She attended grade school in Montana and in 1931 moved to Tillamook. She attended Modern Beauty College in Salem and opened her own beauty shop in Seaside. She married William Galloway, and they purchased a home in Arch Cape. They relocated to Arizona.

The couple later ranched in Chewelah, Wash., and also lived in the Soap Lake area, where she was a grocery store clerk, and in Independence, where she was a police department matron. She later worked as a corrections supervisor for the Hillcrest School.

The couple retired and moved to the Oregon coast, and spent many winters in Arizona.

She later moved to Bend for 13 years and later to La Grande, where she spent the last two years.

She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed gambling, fishing, playing pinochle, traveling, gold panning and entertaining friends.

Survivors include a brother, John Lomis; two sons, Frank and Patrick; two daughters, Mary Lee West and Lynn Bowlin; four granddaughters and four great-grandchildren. Her husband died earlier.

Russell Hudkins Jr.

La Grande

1925-2002

Russell Hudkins Jr., 76, of La Grande, died Jan. 4 at a local care center. A private service will be held. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hudkins was born July 24, 1925, to Russell and Sadie Durkee Hudkins in Albany. He married Carol White in 1944 in Santa Monica, Calif., and served in the Air Force. He lived most of his life in Burns and worked as a contractor and in excavating. He moved to La Grande 2 1/2 years ago to be near his son.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Grant and Beth Hudkins of La Grande, and a daughter, Gail Ottlinger of Redmond. His wife died earlier.

Otto Cochran

Otto E. Cochran, 92, of La Grande died Thursday at a local care center. Loveland Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Billie Prince

Wallowa

1932-2002

Billie V. Prince, 69, of Wallowa died Jan. 10 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. A memorial service was held Jan. 14 at Bollman Funeral Home, Enterprise, with military honors by the VFW Post 4307.

Mr. Prince was born May 20, 1932, to Wayne and Sadie Horton Prince. He attended school in Wallowa County and served in the Navy during the Korean War. He married Doris Crow in Lostine. The couple lived in Redmond for 16 years before returning to Wallowa in 1979.

Survivors include his wife of Wallowa, children and their spouses, Vernon Prince of Wallowa, and Jeannie and Carl Gridley of Prineville, two grandchildren, two brothers, Don of Pendleton, and Lawrence of Alabama, and a sister, Edna Rae Fletcher of Wallowa. Three brothers Glen, Alvin and Earl all died earlier.

Otto Cochran

La Grande

1909-2002

Otto Edwin Cochran, 92, of La Grande died Jan. 24 at a local care center. At his request there will be no service. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cochran was born Sept. 29, 1909, to Walter M. and Blanche B. Barnes Cochran in Pomeroy, Wash. He married Phyllis A. Ansell on Jan. 3, 1930. He worked for the Mount Emily Lumber Co. starting in 1928 and for their successors until 1980, a total of 52 years. He was a quality control supervisor for Boise Cascade and in 1969 received the Master Certificate from the Western Wood Products Association. He was a member of the La Grande Rifle Club and taught gun safety at the Junior Rifle Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood cutting, camping, gardening and projects with his family.

Survivors include two children, Shirley Gruis and Phillip Cochran, both of La Grande; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; and two brothers, Clifford Cochran of Kennewick, and Theodore Cochran of Craig, Colo.

His wife and two brothers, Harold Cochran and Clayton Cochran, all died earlier.

Wally Collingwood

La Grande

Wally Collingwood, 87, of La Grande died today at his home. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred L. Yeoman

Enterprise

1923-2000

Mildred L. Yeoman, 78, of Enterprise died Jan. 25 in Enterprise.

A graveside service for Mrs. Yeoman will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Vineland Cemetery in Clarkston, Wash., with Jerry Raedeke officiating.

Mrs. Yeoman was born Aug. 29, 1923, to Ole and Bessie (Robinson) Watkins in Kooskia, Idaho.

She married Otis Yeoman on June 15, 1940, in Clarkston, Wash.

Mrs. Yeoman was a homemaker who especially enjoyed quilting and crocheting. She did work as a dispatcher in the Wallowa County Sheriffs Office for a time in the late 1970s.

Survivors include her husband at their home in Enterprise; a daughter, Glenda McFetridge of Joseph; a son, Eddie Yeoman of Hermiston; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Naomi Johnson of Central Point and Clesta Dede Drader of Lewiston, Idaho. Several brothers and sisters and a granddaughter died earlier.

Ruth Kennedy

La Grande

1912-2002

Ruth Kennedy, 89, died Jan. 28 at a local care center.

A private family memorial will be held later, and burial will be in Oshkosh, Neb.

Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kennedy was born June 17, 1912, the first of 10 children, to John and Kathryn McDonald Nolan in Chicago. Her mother died when Ruth was 17, and she lived at home until she was 29, helping raise the family.

She began nurses training in 1942 in Alliance, Neb., and graduated in 1946.

She met her husband, Sylvester Ves Kennedy while in nurses training, and they married on April 22, 1946, in Torrington, Wyo., after he was discharged from the Army.

He died in 1965.

She worked as a nurse until retiring in 1984 when she was 72. Family members said she loved her profession and was an excellent nurse. She was very proud of her six grandsons and six great-grandchildren.

She is survived by three children, John Kennedy of Castle Rock, Colo., Tom Kennedy of Pendleton and Suzann Chapman of La Grande; and two brothers, Jim Nolan of Denver and John Nolan of Sweet Home, Ark.

William W. Collingwood

La Grande

1914-2002

William W. Wally Collingwood, 87, died Jan. 28 at his home in La Grande.

A celebration of life will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Committal and interment will follow at Grandview Cemetery.

Mr. Collingwood was born March 15, 1914, to William H. and Flora Eileen Patton Collingwood in Portland. He married Clara Wood on April 7, 1940, in Chehalis, Wash.

He worked as a logger and brush piler for the timber industry and was a well-known gunsmith. He and his wife raised Arabian horses for more than 20 years. He enjoyed deer and elk hunting.

Besides his wife of La Grande, he is survived by a son, Tim of La Grande; a daughter, Flora Gettenberg of Baker City; a brother, John Collingwood of Portland; five grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and other relatives. Two sisters and a brother died earlier.

Everett King

1929-2001

Everett Glen King, 72, formerly of Union, died Dec. 5 at a care center in Springfield. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Union Cemetery. Buell Funeral Home in Springfield is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. King was born July 5, 1929, to William King and Maude Gross in Newton, Ark. He married Betty Elliot on Feb. 15, 1952, in Rogers, Ark. In 1953 the couple moved to Union, where he worked for Union County in the road department. He enjoyed rebuilding old engines.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Everett Lee and Lien King of California, Sherry and Jerry Johnson of Union, James and Kari King of Eugene, and Debra King of Washington, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His wife and a daughter, Brenda, died earlier.

Bill Cool

Wallowa County

1909-2002

Eldon Floyd Bill Cool, 92, of Wallowa County, died Jan. 29 at a care center. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., in Enterprise. Private burial will be at Prairie Creek Cemetery.

Mr. Cool was born in 1909 in Indiana and the family arrived in Ione around 1919. He married his wife Edna in 1934 in Three Forks, Mont. He sheared sheep from Arizona to Montana until 1942, worked as a fire lookout for the Forest Service, and had a ranch in Wallowa County. The family lived in Enterprise and Joseph from 1948 until 1957, when they moved to Prairie Creek Ranch. He retired from farming and raising cattle in 1977. He enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling, and loved children. Children who visited the nursing home called him Cool Mr. Cool.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law Louise and Aldo Kunz, son and daughter-in-law Dan and Linda Cool, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a sister, Mabel Miller of Post Falls, Idaho, and other relatives. His wife; a grandson, Josh Cool; three sisters; and six brothers all died earlier.

Arlie Wilkinson

La Grande

1909-2002

Arlington Orville Arlie Wilkinson, 92, of La Grande, died Jan. 27 at a local care center. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at the Island City Cemetery.

Mr. Wilkinson was born Dec. 1, 1909, to William Abraham and Sarah Katherine McMillan Wilkinson in Mountain View, Okla. He graduated from high school in Eugene and served in the Oregon National Guard. On Aug. 14, 1936, he married Mildred Jane Webster in Seattle.

Mr. Wilkinson was service manager at the Ford Garage in Eugene before owning and operating a grocery and service station in Jasper for five years.

In 1942 the couple moved to La Grande, where he farmed and worked for Goss Motor Co., Turleys Tire and La Grande Lumber Co.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Elks Lodge and the Farm Bureau, and was an honorary member of the La Grande Riding Club, past president of the Mavericks and served as vice president of the Grande Ronde TV Association.

He enjoyed showing American Saddle-bred horses, fishing, camping and visiting with family and friends.

Survivors include his sister and her husband, Wilma and Norman Brown. His wife and four brothers Oris, Everett, Jerry and Royal all died earlier.

Delbert A. Quesenberry, 83, of Pendleton and formerly of Enterprise died Saturday at a care center. The funeral will begin at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Enterprise Community Church. A full obituary will be published later.

Buck Winters

Formerly of Wallowa County

1904-2002

Buck Winters, 97, of Hermiston and formerly of Wallowa County, died Feb. 1 at Good Samaritan Center in Hermiston. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of the Burns Mortuary in Hermiston. Burial will follow at the Hermiston Cemetery.

Mr. Winters was born Feb. 16, 1904, to James Ross and Anna Mae Beeman Winters in Paradise. He married Elva C. Albee on Aug. 4, 1938, in Hermiston. After she died in 1988, he married Bessie Schultz on March 11, 1989. Although he had no children of his own he raised a number of nieces and nephews. He worked for the Umatilla Army Depot, for the Westland Irrigation Company and as a farmer, a logger and in the potato and watermelon fields. He lived in Minam, Enterprise, Wallowa and in California.

Survivors include his wife Bessie of Hermiston, five sisters, Bertha Prince of Union, Wilma Courtney of Lostine, Bessie Fleser of Enterprise, Rena Clark of Pendleton and Alta Anderson of Estacada, and other relatives. Three brothers, Bill, Virgil and Percy Winters, and five sisters, Goldie, Pearl, Violet, Leatha, Sylvia and Armetta, all died earlier.
