A Look Back: This is how Riveria Elementary School appeared shortly after it was built 90 years ago. ().

Riveria Elementary School is about to receive a salute 90 years in the making.

The school’s history will be recognized at a pair of dessert socials to be conducted at Riveria from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 28 and 29. Everyone who attended Riveria and parents of children who have attended the school are encouraged to attend.

The dessert socials will be conducted to commemorate the closing of school at the end of the school year. The La Grande School District decided to close Riveria because of the building’s poor condition and to save money.

The May 28 dessert social is targeted for alumni. Nostalgia and history will be emphasized at this session.

The May 29 social will be aimed at current students and families.

Both socials are open to everyone, emphasized Riveria Principal Sandi Donnelly.

"We want to show off Riveria one more time,” Donnelly said.

Tours of the school, built in 1912, will be given by fifth- and sixth-graders at both socials. In addition old Riveria photographs and memorabilia will be displayed, and there will be "open mics” to give people a chance to share humorous moments and talk about special people they knew at Riveria and interesting things that happened there.

Riveria T-shirts and pennants will be sold and orders for copies of Riveria’s last school picture will be taken.
