Marie Feik

La Grande

1914-2002

Marie N. Feik, a longtime resident of La Grande, died Dec. 7 at Grande Ronde Hospital. She was 88.

A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center in La Grande. Public visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St.

Following the service, burial and dedication of the grave will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in La Grande.

Mrs. Feik was born Oct. 1, 1914, in Kestambul, Bulgaria, to Roscoe and Anna Kostova Nedelcoff.

When she was 15, she came to the United States with her mother.

She married Joseph Feik on June 18, 1963, in the Salt Lake City LDS temple, and they made their home in La Grande.

Mrs. Feik was known for her strong faith and setting a wonderful example. She enjoyed reading the scriptures and was always humming and singing.

She loved to crochet and garden.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, David and Terry Reynard of Nevada, Aaron and Sue Feik of Bothel, Wash., Dale and Linda Feik of Forest Grove, Joseph and Pat Feik of La Grande and Melissa and Paul Keefer of Boardman, and a sister and brother-in-law, Neda and Richard Jarvis of California.

Her husband as well as a daughter and son-in-law, Barbra and John Breedlove, died earlier.

Ronald Lamotte

Ronald Lamotte, 67, formerly of Enterprise, died Tuesday at a local care center. Arrangements will be announced later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

The Rev.

Paul Jewell

Formerly of La Grande

1931-2002

The Rev. Paul Orlando Jewell, 71, of Salem and formerly of La Grande died Dec. 9. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Salem.

The Rev. Jewell was born May 22, 1931. In 1953 he graduated from Willamette University, where he played football and became a lifelong sports enthusiast. He earned degrees in divinity and theology from Garrett Theological School at Northwestern University and New College Seminary in Edinburgh, Scotland. He served as a United Methodist minister for 39 years in churches in Lents, Metzger, La Grande, Bend, Salem-Trinity and Fairbanks, Alaska. He was an avid naturalist, hiker, fisherman, camp cook and photographer, and led dozens of family trail hikes into the Eagle Cap Wilderness in the Wallowa Mountains. His gentle sense of humor, gift for story telling and melodic singing voice were generously shared, and his parting sentiment to family and friends was always, "Keep to the ridges."

Survivors include his wife, Elois Arden, a daughter Coralie and her husband Steve, a son David, a daughter Joy and her husband John, a son Scott and his wife Gabriella, and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to the United Methodist Conference Treasurer, Wallowa Lake Camp for the Paul Jewell Yurt Fund, 1505 S.W. 18th St., Portland, 97201.

Virginia Sannar

Formerly of Joseph

1914-2002

Virginia Lucretia Peal Sannar, 88, of Irrigon and formerly of Joseph, died Dec. 2 at the home of her daughter. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St. in Enterprise.

Mrs. Sannar was born Jan. 12, 1914, to Enoch Dudley and Mary Jane Ruckman Peal on upper Prairie Creek. She graduated from Enterprise High School and attended nurse’s training in Baker City. She married Lester David Sannar on Aug. 30, 1936, in Enterprise. The couple bought the Joseph Drug Store in the early 1940s and renamed it Joseph Sundries. They ran the liquor store for over 50 years. She was a life member of the Joseph chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.

The first Chief Joseph Days was held on her family’s ranch, and she and her brothers donated the lumber for the rodeo grounds. She became the first Queen Mother, the chaperone for the rodeo court. After moving to Irrigon she taught Brazilian embroidery.

Survivors include two daughters, Jane McRoberts and Ann Sannar, both of Irrigon, nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Rosanna Strenke

Formerly of Haines

1926-2002

Rosanna Strenke, 76, of Lake Oswego and formerly of Haines died Dec. 7 in Tualatin. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Crescent Grove Cemetery in Tigard. Young’s Funeral Home in Tigard is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Strenke was born Aug. 7, 1926, as Rosanna Taylor in Haines. She moved to Portland during World War II to work in the shipyards as a welder and burner. She married Oscar Strenke in 1946. They both worked as long-haul drivers in the 1940s and were members of the Teamsters union. She was a member of the Pit River Indian Tribe of California, Madesi Band.

Survivors include her companion, Marvin Cropp of Lake Oswego and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband died in 1976.

Memorials may be made to any favorite charity.

Delbert Howell

La Grande

1913-2002

Delbert Woodrow Howell, 89, of La Grande died Dec.11 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St.

Mr. Howell was born Sept. 26, 1913, to Clay and Alice Taylor Howell in Malin. He attended schools in Ashland and served in the Army during World War II. In 1941 he married Mary Marvin in Reno, Nev. He owned a logging and a custom excavation business in Jackson County before moving to La Grande in 1979. He had a passion for hunting and fishing, and packed into the Eagle Cap Wilderness with his family well into his 70s.

Survivors include his wife of La Grande, sons, Paul Howell of Rogue River and Stephen Howell of Las Vegas, Nev., three grandchildren, a sister, Ketura Riis of Rogue River, and other relatives. A brother, Earnest Howell, and two sisters, Pearl Bibby and Ruby Stevens, died earlier.

Donna Rae Gilpin

Irrigon

1932-2002

La Grande native Donna Rae Gilpin, 70, died Dec. 11 at her home in Irrigon. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at Finley’s Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Portland.

Mrs. Gilpin was born Jan. 17, 1932, to Melvin L. and Fern Baum Whallon. She was a second generation member of the Elsyness Sylvester and Mary Eva White Baum family, which settled in the Grande Ronde Valley.

As a small child along with her parents, they made their home in Portland, where she received her education. She was highly respected for her quiet, congenial manner and graciously accepted honors for competition in speed typing.

She is survived by her husband, Harry, of Irrigon; four children, Ben of Provo, Utah, Kathy and Dale of Portland, and Cindy of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A daughter, Susan Fern, died earlier.

Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is handling arrangements.

Linda Beeson

La Grande

Linda Beeson, 59, of La Grande died Friday at her home of natural causes. Arrangements will be announced later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Daniel Skole

Formerly of La Grande

1947-2002

Daniel Edward Skole, 55, of Boise and formerly of La Grande died Oct. 25 of natural causes. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Faith Center, 10300 South D St. in Island City. The Chapel of the Chimes in Meridian, Idaho, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Skole was born Aug. 18, 1947, to Edward Peter and Doris Marie Bishop Skole in Denver. He weighed only 2 1/2 pounds at birth and was named a "miracle baby" by the Denver newspapers. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War, and in 1969 he married Valerie Gardner. The couple lived in Phoenix, Ariz., and were later divorced. He lived in La Grande, in Colorado and in Hawaii and most recently was employed by the Power Engineers of Boise. He learned to build and repair computer systems and enjoyed painting, writing poetry and reading.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Doris and Robert Foster of La Grande; a son, Erik Daniel Skole of Honolulu, Hawaii; a daughter and her spouse, Allison Melinda and Mark Schmittle of La Grande; four grandchildren; a brother and his spouse, Mark and Nancy Skole of Rowlette, Texas; a sister and her spouse, Debbie and Cecil Carrier of Marydale, N.Y.; and other relatives. His father died earlier.

‘Dee’ Porter

Formerly of La Grande

1922-2002

Aldea Georgeanna "Dee" Porter, 80, of Springfield and formerly of La Grande died Dec. 11. Burial is today at Gilham Community Church in Eugene. Buell Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Porter was born March 13, 1922, to John and Mary Flora Martell Cornettii. She worked as a meat-wrapper until 1966 when she retired and became a nanny in Oakland, Calif. She lived in La Grande from 1987 to 1993. She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, crochet, playing cards and cooking.

Survivors include a daughter, Deana Martin of Springfield, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two sisters, Margaret Bassford and Helen Cornettii, and other relatives. A brother, John, and two sisters, Viola and Lillian, all died

earlier.
