‘Curly’ Gilmore

Formerly of Elgin and Union

1904-2003

Carl Evart "Curly" Gilmore, 98, of San Jose, Calif., and formerly of Elgin and Union died Dec. 20 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Union Presbyterian Church, 858 University Ave., Los Altos, Calif. A private burial will be in Elgin. The Lima Family Funeral Home of Santa Clara is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gilmore was born Nov. 4, 1904, to John C. and Lulu Crawford Gilmore in Elgin. He graduated from Union High School in 1924, from Oregon State University in 1930. He starred in football and was selected to participate in the 1930 East-West Shrine Football Game. Later, he earned a master’s degree in physical education from the University of Southern California. He married Vivian Irenea Hall, his wife for 72 years, and taught school and coached in Shasta High School. He completed his career as director of athletics and physical education at Shasta Junior College.

He received a commission in the Army Reserve as a second lieutenant and served in the Army during World War II as a military policeman, and commanded the unit that provided security at the Japanese war crimes trials in Manila, Philippines, in 1946.

He was recognized by many organizations for his contributions. In retirement he enjoyed traveling and worked as a track and field official in the San Francisco Bay area.

Survivors include include his wife of San Jose; a son, John Carl Gilmore of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; a daughter, Glenda Irene Gilmore Strombom, of Mountain View, Calif.; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and other relatives. A sister, Lena Gilmore Zeek, died earlier.

Dorothy Davis

Formerly of La Grande

1923-2003

Dorothy Elizabeth Davis, 79, of Hermiston and formerly of La Grande died Jan. 11 at Grande Ronde Hospital after a long illness. Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, and the funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., with Pastors Gary Hood and Kemit Knight officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest East Cemetery. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church, 775 W. Highland Ave. in Hermiston.

Mrs. Davis was born Dec. 10, 1923, to David L. and Katherine Belle McKay Warner in Los Angeles. She graduated from Commerce High School in San Francisco and attended a year of college. In 1947 she moved to La Grande, where she was a captain in the Salvation Army. She married Elmer Richard "Swede" Davis in

La Grande.

She was active in the PTA, and was a member of Soroptimists, Pioneer Park Church of God, a member and then chair of La Grande’s election board. She was a wonderful seamstress and the TOPS coordinator for much of Oregon and Eastern Washington for 20 years.

Survivors include her children, Laurie S. Ball of Hermiston, Richard Davis of Reno, Nev., Barbara Mehuron of Milwaukie and Loren Davis of Portland; daughter-in-law, Charlene Storoe of La Grande; son-in-law, Aubrey "Sid" Sidwell of Tonopah, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and other relatives. Her husband and a great-grandchild died earlier.

Dorothy Maxine Gribling

Formerly of Elgin and Enterprise

1913-2003

Dorothy Maxine Gribling, 89, of Pendleton and formerly of Elgin and Enterprise died Jan. 12 at a care center. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bollman Funeral Chapel, 315 W. Main St. Burial will follow at the Enterprise Cemetery.

Mrs. Gribling was born Dec. 31, 1913, to Roy C. and Helen Moore Edgmand. She attended school in Enterprise and married Gordon Gribling on April 16, 1930. The couple lived in Enterprise until 1942, when they moved to Elgin where they had a dry-cleaning business then a farm and irrigation equipment business. After retirement they moved to Troy, and after her husband’s death in 1991, she moved to Elgin. She moved to a care center two months ago.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Gayle and Barbara Gribling of Elgin, and Jean Monaghan of Pendleton, seven grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.

Ethyl Thomas

Island City

1919-2003

Ethyl Beatrice Thomas, 83, of Island City died Jan. 12 at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise after a long illness. At her request there will be no service. Riverside Mortuary in Garden City, Idaho, was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Thomas was born April 5, 1919, to Alva Amos and Georgia Beatrice Hudspeth Gardner in Baker City. She graduated from Baker High School and married Harry A. "Seth" Thomas on Nov. 11, 1953, in Sherwood. The family lived in the La Grande area off and on for a number of years. She was a member of the Summerville Baptist Church and enjoyed crochet, fancy work of all kinds, reading the Bible and camping.

Survivors include her husband of Island City, a daughter and son-in-law, Don and Gayle Emmons of La Grande, three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, two sisters, Jo Dickinson of Baker City and Teen Hansel of La Grande, and other relatives.

‘Willie’ Cleaver

Formerly of Imbler

1928-2003

Wilfred "Willie" Cleaver, 74, of Tri-Cities and formerly of Imbler died Jan. 14 at a care center in Kennewick, Wash. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Jan. 25 at Columbia Memorial Garden in Pasco, Wash. Burial will be at the Summerville Cemetery.

Mr. Cleaver was born Aug. 14, 1928, to Charles "Chick" and Leitha Watson Cleaver in La Grande. He attended school in Imbler and enlisted in the Coast Guard during World War II. He lived in many places and worked as a high-lineman in Idaho, Montana, California and Washington. He worked for Power City in Pasco until his retirement. He married and divorced several times, and in 1968 he married Sally Allen who died earlier. He was a member of the American Legion and 40 & 8. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and telling stories.

Survivors include children, Tony, Ed, Cindy and Tina Cleaver, all of Pasco, Chris, Danny, Darrel and Kim Cleaver, Roxie Cleaver of Seattle, Rebecca Cleaver of Kansas, and Ramona and Renee Cleaver of Idaho; many grandchildren; a stepfather, Bus Hoover; two sisters, Janice Cleaver of Imbler and Marie Lester of La Grande; and other relatives.

Mary Hays

Enterprise and Baker City

1911-2003

Mary Isabelle Rouse Hays, 91, of Baker City died Jan. 6 at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.

Burial took place at Mount Hope Cemetery in Baker City. Coles Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hays was born May 21, 1911, to Michael and Maude Rouse of Unity. She graduated from St. Francis Academy in Baker City, where she excelled in art and music, and played basketball. On June 17, 1934, she married Vernon E. "Beanie" Hays of Wallowa County who owned grocery stores in Ontario and Enterprise. The couple began ranching in 1944 on Alder Slope and on a registered Hereford ranch between Enterprise and Joseph. After her husband’s death in 1973, she returned to Baker City. She was a member of the Catholic Church and will be remembered for her sense of humor.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Jo Ann Radinovich of John Day, Mike and Ella Mae Hays of Grants Pass, John Hays of Unity, Dan and Linda Hays of West Linn, Dave and Angie Hays of Baker City, 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. An infant daughter and two brothers died earlier.

Geraldine Knapper

Formerly of Joseph

Geraldine M. Knapper, 86, of Pendleton and formerly of Joseph died Jan. 14. A celebration of life will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Joseph United Methodist Church with burial to follow at Prairie Creek Cemetery.

Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Knapper was born July 19, 1916, to Fred and Clara Leiske George in Vanhook, N.D. On Dec. 28, 1946, she married Lou Knapper in La Grande. She taught in the one-room school at Flora and in the Joseph School District, retiring in 1980 after 30 years. She was a member of the Methodist Church and enjoyed traveling and being with her friends and grandchildren.

Survivors include children, Donald Knapper and Jeanette Hall, both of Pilot Rock; five grandchildren; two brothers, Robert George of Eugene and Warren George of Athelo, Wash.; and two sisters, Lucille Nelson and Flora George, both of Milton-Freewater. Her husband died earlier.

Gayle Mentgen

La Grande

Gayle Mentgen, 49, of La Grande died Jan. 12 at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland after a short illness. A celebration of life will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday in the New Song Community Church, 3008 Cove Ave. Burial will be private. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mentgen was born July 23, 1953, to Charles W. and Juanita Hinton Carnes at Klamath Falls. She graduated from high school in 1971 at Happy Camp, Calif., and attended Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland.

On Sept. 9, 1972, she married Louis Mentgen in Lincoln, Neb., and in 1983 the family moved to La Grande where she worked at the Heidi Ho Preschool as an assistant director. Later she was a caregiver for Senior and Disabled Services. She attended the First Baptist Church and the New Song Community Church. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, the outdoors and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband of La Grande, children and their spouses, Anita and Russ Olson of Salem, Richie and Kim Mentgen, and Joy Mentgen, all of La Grande, two grandchildren, two brothers, Bob Cantrell of Phoenix, Ore., and Bill Carnes of Day’s Creek, and other relatives.

Virginia Standard

La Grande

Virginia Mabel Standard, 87, of La Grande died Jan. 13 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. A private burial will be at the Island City Cemetery.

Mrs. Standard was born on Sept. 19, 1915, to Charles A. and Ruth V. Hancock Davis in Huntington. She attended school in Ontario and on August 24, 1948, she married Ernest Jesse Standard in Ontario. She worked as the projectionist for the Huntington Theatre for 17 years. She enjoyed rose gardening, reading and being at the ocean.

Survivors include her daughters, Elenora Arnold of Huntington, Patricia Harry of Stanwood, Wash., and Carol Brown of Puyallup, Wash.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; her sisters, Mary Anderson of Weiser, Idaho, and Charlotte McCown of The Dalles; and other relatives. Her husband, two brothers and a sister died earlier.

Katherine Curran

Enterprise

1927-2003

Katherine J. Curran, 75, of Enterprise died Jan. 16 at her home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Katherine’s Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Monday with Father Peter Fernando officiating. Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Curran was born Dec. 27, 1927, to Hugh Leo and Mary Slinger McMahon in Charles City, Iowa. On Jan. 27, 1947, she married John Paul Curran in Los Angeles. She worked as an insurance underwriter and was a member of the Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, a daughter and her husband, Linda and Steve Testerman, all of Enterprise; a stepson, Jason Testerman of Oregon City; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; a brother, Hugh McMahon of Fallon, Nev., and a sister, Marilyn Boardman of Temple City, Calif.

A son, Michael Curran, died earlier.

Edgar Draper

Formerly of La Grande

1918-2003

Edgar E. "Ed" Draper, 84, of Albany and formerly of La Grande died Jan. 11 in Houston. At his request there will be no funeral service.

Mr. Draper was born Feb. 22, 1918, in Pendleton. He graduated from La Grande High School in 1936, and attended Draper School of Commerce, his father’s business college, which later merged with Eastern Oregon Normal School.

He married Audrey Marie Carpenter in Pendleton in 1940, and served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II in the European Theater. After the war the couple moved to Island City, where he office and sales manager for Pioneer Flouring Mills. He was mayor of Island City and served with the rural volunteer fire department. He was chairman of the La Grande School Board, and a life member of the Elks, serving as Exalted Ruler and Grand Exalted Ruler.

In 1968, the couple moved to Albany, where he worked at Linn-Benton Community College, first establishing the department of agriculture, and then working as assistant director of community education. He retired in 1973 and later worked for Pickseed West Inc. of Albany. He was a member of the Oregon Golf Superintendents Association, and permanently retired in 1994. He enjoyed dogs and cats, music and eating out.

Survivors include his children, Dean Draper of Houston, Fred Draper of Albany, Julie Draper of Portland and Jane Siebler of Corvallis; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His wife died in 1999.

Harris Lacey

La Grande

1923-2003

Harris H. Lacey, 79, of La Grande died Jan. 12 in Las Vegas after a long illness. The funeral will begin at 11 am. Saturday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., with Father Hank Albrecht of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery.

Mr. Lacey was born April 8, 1923, to Van F. and Mary Marshall Lacey in Missouri. He graduated from high school there and attended technical school before joining the Army, serving in the European Theater during World War II. His first marriage ended in divorce. On Sept. 17, 1980, he married Remy Mori in Manila, Philippines. The family settled in Cornelius, where he worked as a supervisor for Tektronix in Beaverton. He retired in 1988, and the family moved to La Grande in 1989. He was a member of the Catholic church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and spending time with his friends and family.

Survivors include his wife and a son, Lance Lacey, both of

La Grande, children from his first marriage, Mark Lacey of Portland, Shawn Lacey and Julie Powell, both of Colorado; two grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Norman Lacey of Forest Grove, Van Lacey and Jeri Kukenrider, both of Milwaukee, Vivian Van de Hey of Independence, and Viola McCarthy of Texas; and other relatives.

Two brothers and a sister died earlier.

George Lichtenthaler

Formerly of La Grande

1930-2003

George N. Lichtenthaler, 72, of Pacific City and formerly of La Grande died Jan. 1. At his request there was no funeral. A celebration of life will be scheduled later.

Mr. Lichtenthaler was born Feb. 23, 1930, to Russell and June Lichtenthaler in Portland. He served in the Air Force, and on Dec. 31, 1947, he married Shirley Morgan. The couple lived in Lebanon, where he was a disc jockey and station manager, in Albany, and later in La Grande, where he was a sales representative for Terry Industries from 1990 to 1993 when he retired. He was past president of the Albany Timber Carnival, a member of the Albany Jaycees and the Professional Ski Instructors of America.

He enjoyed golf, skiing and spending time with his family.

Survivors include children, Michael of Portland, Mark of Albany and Brett of Vancouver, Wash., Karen Thomas and Heidi Thomas, both of Albany; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife died in 1991.

Tony Ramos

Formerly of Joseph

1957-2003

Tony Ramos, 45, former coach, athletic director and principal at Joseph High School, died Jan. 12 in Reno, Nev., of natural causes.

A memorial service was scheduled for this morning in Riddle, with a graveside service planned to take place in Echo at a later date.

Mr. Ramos was born in Pendleton on Dec. 26, 1957, to Jack and Dorothy Warnstaff Ramos, both now deceased.

Mr. Ramos, of Canyonville, was responsible for starting up the varsity baseball program at Jo-Hi in 1996 and served as coach. He was raised and educated in Stanfield, graduating from high school there in 1975. He attended Eastern Oregon University and received a bachelor’s in 1979, a master’s in education in 1983 and his administration degree in 1988. He married Lynne Elfering on Nov. 21, 1981, in Vale.

His first teaching position was in Nyssa, where he stayed for nine years. There, he taught and coached football, basketball and baseball.

He was principal at Riddle High School from 1983 to 1993 and spent a year as principal at Gervais High School.

He was high school principal at Joseph from 1994 to 1998, also serving as athletic director for three years and as an assistant football coach for two years. He left Joseph to become superintendent of the Day’s Creek District in southern Douglas County until resigning in the spring of 2001.

His family said he had a special gift of working with children, especially through athletics, and those with a troubled life. After years of coaching he was finally able to coach and watch his own three children in school athletics.

Survivors include his wife of Canyonville, two sons, Coby and T.J.; a daughter, K’Dean; a sister, Jeannie Bloom of Hermiston; his stepfather, Louie Dearborn of Pilot Rock and other relatives.

John Hines Sr.

La Grande

1916-2003

John W. Hines Sr., 86, of La Grande died Jan. 15 at a local care center. A graveside service will begin at 3 pm. Monday at Grandview Cemetery with the Rev. Norman Shrumm of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hines was born June 14, 1916, to Frederick and Hilda Nelson Hines in Ashland, Kan. He attended Kansas State University and graduated from Columbia University as an architect. He served in the Navy during World War II as a lieutenant commander in the South Pacific, and on Dec. 23, 1943, he married Janis Michelsen, in Chicago. He lived in Wichita, Kan., and Palo Alto, Calif., before moving to La Grande. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and served as elder and deacon in Palo Alto. He was a member of the Masons and had been a Boy Scout and scoutmaster. He was active in the arts and entertainment community in Palo Alto.

Survivors include children, John Hines Jr. of La Grande, Margaret Adams of Boise and Robert Hines of Portland; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His wife died earlier.

Eula Quesenberry

Formerly of Enterprise

1917-2003

Eula Irene Quesenberry, 85, of Pendleton and formerly of Enterprise died Jan. 17 at a care center. A funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Pendleton. A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Enterprise Cemetery.

Mrs. Quesenberry was born Jan. 25, 1917, to John and Pearl King McAfee in Monette, Ark. She and her mother moved to Oregon, and she attended school in Joseph. On May 9, 1941, she married Delbert Quesenberry in Sparks, Nev., and the couple lived in Enterprise where she worked at The Trading Post at Wallowa Lake for over 20 years. For five years she and her daughter had a restaurant at Wallowa Lake behind the skating rink. They moved to Pendleton in 1998.

She was a member of the Enterprise Community Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Forth of Pendleton, one grandchild, four stepgrandchildren and a great-grandchild. Her husband and a brother, Lee Davis, died earlier.

King Spain

La Grande

1918-2003

King Elwin Spain, 84, of La Grande died Jan. 16 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at the Presbyterian Friendship Center, 1204 Spring Ave. A private burial will be held later. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Spain was born March 2, 1918, to Fred E. and Mabel Alta Keuhey Spain in Union. He graduated from Union High School in 1936 and served in the Army during World War II.

In 1940 he married Catherine Trump. After her death he married Erma Jean Baum in 1976. She also died. On June 30, 1978, he married Lorna Allen in Reno, Nev. He worked as a logger and then scaled logs for Boise Cascade. He retired in 1980.

He was a member and past master of Grande Ronde Valley Lodge 56 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite, Al Kader Shrine and the Union County Shrine Club. He was active in selling advertisements for the East-West Shrine Football Game and supported the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

He was creative and artistic, making works of art in wood and stained glass. He had a love of animals of all types, especially his horses and mule. He enjoyed camping trips in the high mountains and spending time with family and friends. One granddaughter said that he left a legacy of how to live, die and be happy.

Survivors include his wife of La Grande; children and their spouses, Cheryl and Creighton Kooch of Enterprise, Pam and King Spain Jr. of Union, Cindy and Tony Melnechuk of Spokane, Teresa Allen of Salem, Dan and Lucinda Allen of Boise, Valerie and Keith Braun of Tillamook, and Jomarie and Steve Mouro of North Delta, British Columbia; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

Two sons, Gary Spain and Doug Allen, two sisters, Marie Colgan and Frederica Miller, and a granddaughter, Toni Spain, died earlier.
