‘Aralee’ Scripter

Formerly of Union

1915-2003

Dorothy "Aralee" Scripter, 87, of Milton-Freewater and formerly of Union died Feb. 26 at a care center. A private service will be held in Indiana at a later date. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Scripter was born June 23, 1915, to William T. and Amanda Snyder Creek in Hamilton County in Indiana. She went to school there and married Lowell Angle and later Charles Scripter. She worked as a seamstress and on the family farm.

She moved to Union in 1993 to be close to family, and later to Milton-Freewater. She was an artist and enjoyed many types of art.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Carleen Angle of Milton-Freewater, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her two husbands, two brothers and five sisters all died earlier.

Katherine Davis

Formerly of La Grande

1918-2003

Katherine Wagner Davis, 84, of Anaheim, Calif., and formerly of La Grande died Jan. 28 at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, Calif. At her request there will be no service. Burial is at Melrose Abbey Memorial Park in Anaheim.

Mrs. Davis was born June 21, 1918, to Oren E. and Margaret Ladd Wagner in

La Grande. Her grandparents were pioneers to Union and Wallowa counties. She attended a country grade school in the fall and spring and the school in town during the winter. She graduated from La Grande High School and in 1941 married Estel Adron Davis. Her husband became a pilot for Trans World Airlines and the family lived in Virginia, Maryland, New York and Missouri before moving to Anaheim in 1956. She enjoyed telling stories of her childhood in La Grande, and making things more orderly and beautiful.

Survivors include children, Sharon Shostrom of Newport Beach, Calif., Allen Davis of Glendale, Calif., and other relatives. Her husband and a sister, Marian Fowler of Craigmont, Idaho, died earlier.

Doris Smutz

La Grande

1910-2003

Doris Louise Smutz, 93, of La Grande died March 3 at her home. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Mark Schlessman and Pastor Irwin Smutz officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St.

Mrs. Smutz was born Jan. 25, 1910, to Harry Nathan and Anna Maude Wright French in Butler, Mo. She graduated from high school in Roswell, Idaho, and in 1929 she moved to La Grande, where she worked as the secretary of the First Christian Church.

On Dec. 1, 1938, she married D Smutz in La Grande. He died in 1984.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, where she played the piano and in the church orchestra for many years. She taught Sunday school and accompanied children’s programs. She also played the piano for the local nursing homes until she was 92 years old.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Irwin and Carole Smutz and Donna Dee Clark, all of La Grande; one grandchild; a sister, Wilma Geibel of Salem; a brother, Ivan French of Warsaw, Ind.; and other relatives. Besides her husband, two brothers, Kenneth W. French and John French, and two sisters, Dorothy Cates and Mildred Coffin, died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church to purchase children’s choir robes in care of Daniels Chapel.

Paul Sana

La Grande

1908-2003

Paul L. Sana, 94, of La Grande died March 3 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church.

Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery. Viewing will be from noon to 6 p.m. Friday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St.

Mr. Sana was born June 28, 1908, to Maxiano and Fransisca Sweetos Sana in Pangasingan, Philippines. He moved to Hawaii in 1931, then Tacoma, Wash., Baker City, and in 1939, La Grande. He served in the Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and worked at St. Joseph Hospital until 1970 when he moved to Pendleton. He married Noreen Nagy on June 5, 1972, in Weiser, Idaho.

In 1973 the family moved to Cordova, Alaska, where he worked at a hospital until his retirement in 1986 when they returned to La Grande.

He was a member of the Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. In 1963 he received the Medal Pro Ecclesta Et Pontifice from the pope.

He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, cooking, flower gardening and being with his family.

Survivors include his wife of La Grande, children, Joyce Fleming of Bend, Louis Nagy of Port Orchard, Wash., Don Nagy of La Grande and Ron Nagy of Nampa, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Maximenia Mendavia, Lourine Inez and Leonora Santos, all of the Philippines, and other relatives. One brother and two sisters died earlier.

Memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Valley Church, The Knights of Columbus or the Union County Senior Center in care of Loveland Chapel.

Lena Wilson

La Grande

1914-2003

Lena Dell Wilson, 88, of La Grande died March 2 at a local care center. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. March 15 at Damascus Road Ministries, 905 C Ave. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wilson was born Nov. 27, 1914, to James R. and Grace Rose at Mission. During World War II she worked as a telegrapher for the Union Pacific Railroad at Meacham, La Grande and other stations. She married Merritt Potter and after his death, Ray Wilson. She was a member of Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge and helped with Cub Scouts, 4-H and numerous school activities.

She was an expert marksman and enjoyed hunting, fishing from Mexico to Alaska and traveling. For over 10 years she traveled to Alaska each summer, and she cultivated many friends up and down the Al-Can highway. Her best friend and favorite fishing buddy in the world, however, was her grandson, Mike.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Fran Potter of Palmer, Alaska; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Dave Rose of

La Grande and other relatives. Both husbands and three brothers, Jim, Bert and Tom Rose, all died earlier.

Glen Larsen

Formerly of La Grande

1909-2003

Glen Jensen Larsen, 93, of Utah and formerly of La Grande died March 6. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at the Centerfield First Ward, 210 S. Main St., Centerfield, Utah, with a viewing at noon.

Mr. Larsen was born June 11, 1909, to Lauritz Marinus Larsen and Maren Cathrine Jensen Larsen in Centerfield. He married Roberta Fjeldsted, also of Centerfield on Oct. 1, 1930. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on June 16, 1965. In 1941 the couple moved to La Grande, where he worked as a fireman and engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad. He enjoyed traveling and visiting with family and friends. He kept candy in a shirt pocket and had a hug for everyone.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Dale and Dawn Larsen, Evan and Virginia Larsen, Sharon and Ralph Nelson, Roger and Marie Larsen; 17 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren. His wife; a son, Darvell; four sisters, Olive Larsen, Mabel Follet Blayney, Ina Monson and Doris Stastny; and five brothers, Linden, Harvey, Elmer, Neil, and Chesney Larsen, all died earlier.

Carolyn Odermott

Formerly of La Grande

1932-2003

Carolyn Frances Odermott, 70, of Nampa, Idaho, and formerly of La Grande, died March 1 at her home. A funeral service was held at the First United Methodist Church in Nampa, with burial following at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Odermott was born July 1, 1932, to John and Wilma Bruins in Crandon, S.D. She attended high school in La Grande before moving to Nampa where she married a farmer, Raymond Odermott. The couple divorced in 1975. She opened a pawn shop called Mom’s Loans in 1982 and completed a GED.

Survivors include her longtime companion Richard Matsumoto of Nampa; her mother, Wilma Klaus; children, Otto Odermott III, Viveco Wilson, Stephanie Odermott, Raylene Durrant, Shawna Odermott, Steve Meredith and Mike Meredith; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; five sisters, Myrna Woodell, Marilyn Winterton and Sally Roe, all of La Grande, Lila May of Las Vegas, and Sharon Belcher of Portland; four brothers, John Bruins of Round O, S.C., Oscar Bruins of Heber Springs, Ark., Cecil Bruins of Nampa and Jim Bruins of Hermiston; and other relatives.

Hilda Garrett

La Grande

1918-2003

Hilda Mary Garrett, 84, of La Grande, died March 9 at a local care center.

A service will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in La Grande with the Rev. Don Voeks officiating. Burial will be at the Island City Cemetery. Friends may call today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St.

Mrs. Garrett was born on March 17, 1918, to John and Anna Johnson Lindgren in Lincoln, Neb., where she was raised and educated. While growing up she kept the books for the family farm, a task for which she developed a real talent. After her marriage to James Bryan Garrett on May 6, 1936, they lived in Denver and Boulder, Colo., and surrounding areas. During World War II both she and her husband worked for the government as civilians. He worked as a mechanic for the motor pool while she worked at the ammunitions plant. In 1968 they came to

La Grande, where she and her husband worked as custodians for Eastern Oregon University. Mr. Garrett died on May 29, 1968. She continued working until health challenges forced her retirement in 1982 at age 64.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in La Grande, where she was active in many groups and activities. She enjoyed quilting, yard work and gardening, and she loved animals.

Survivors include her children, Dorothy Plumley of La Grande, Robert Garrett of Eureka, Mont., and Mary Hildebrandt of

La Grande; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; many brothers, sisters; and other relatives.

Marvin Hansen

La Grande

Marvin G. Hansen, 97, of La Grande died Saturday. At his request there will be no funeral. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. A full obituary will be published later.

‘Brandy’ Collins

Imbler

1951-2003

Patricia "Brandy" Collins, 51, of Imbler died March 2 in Portland of cancer. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. April 10 at Victory Christian Center, 1020 Jefferson Ave.

Mrs. Collins was born May 18, 1951, to Edith Young and Leon George in Little Rock, Ark. She was raised in Los Angeles County, Calif., and married Ira "Ike" Collins in 1988 in Imbler.

She was elected to the Imbler City Council in 2001 and struggled to keep her six dogs, which are now at the animal shelter. She had a craft business, Toadsuck Creations, that featured Indian jewelry. She was part Choctaw. She enjoyed fishing, country music, cooking ethnic foods from all over the

world, and was known for being outspoken.

She spent the last six years tracing her family roots, which included famous people like Sam Houston of Alamo fame and Felix Motlow of the Jack Daniels Distillery.

Survivors include son Sean Daniels Sr. of Nampa, Idaho, stepdaughter Marilyn McBride of Baker City, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brothers Jessy George and Jay George, both of of Hot Springs, Ark., Billy George of West Palm Beach, Fla., and other relatives. Her mother, father died earlier, and her husband died of cancer in 1996.

June Spray

Island City

1926-2003

June Marie Spray, 76, of Island City died March 13 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Mrs. Spray was born May 8, 1926, to Chester and Emily Ann Smith Williams in Duffield, Va. She graduated from high school in Weiser, Idaho. During World War II she worked in the shipyards in Portland painting ships. On July 10, 1946, she married Gerald Spray in Boise. The couple settled in La Grande, where they ran the Willow Grocery for 13 years. She worked as a checker for Safeway until she retired in 1988. She enjoyed fishing and camping, playing bingo and slot machines, dog races in Portland, cooking and spending time with her family. She especially loved animals.

Survivors include her husband of Island City, a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Shirley Spray of La Grande; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Sheryl Williams of Boise; a sister-in-law and her husband, Virginia and Dick Satterlee, and other relatives. A son, Gerald L. Spray, and a brother, F.C. Williams, died earlier.
