WALLOWA Wallowa senior Lynique Oveson was named this week as a statewide winner of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

Oveson was nominated by the school and will receive a $1,000 scholarship. She is the first-ever state winner for Wallowa.

The award is handed out for academics, athletics, financial need and community involvement.

Oveson is an all-Old Oregon League volleyball and basketball player, and she was also a member of the state champion Wallowa girls track team last spring.

She comes from a family of athletes. Her twin sister, Mysha, plays sports as does her brother Kaleb, while her cousin Hayley Oveson is a state champion runner.

Oveson carries a 3.98 grade point average and does volunteer work for 4-H and the Future Business Leaders of America.

She said she learned the importance of community service when she was very young.

"My grandma took us to a nursing home (to do community service) when I was little," she said. "It comes as second nature."

The other Wendy’s Heisman state winner was Jeremy Rosenbalm of Arlington.
