Ralph Frizzell

Summerville

1917-2003

Ralph Frizzell, 86, of Summerville died Oct. 23 at his home. Viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Summerville Cemetery chapel. The burial will be private.

Mr. Frizzell was born May 26, 1917, to Wayne and Vesta Johnson Frizzell in Summerville. He graduated from Imbler High School and on April 27, 1946, he married Patricia J. Backus in Boise. He cut logs and farmed all of his life. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and was an avid hunter of deer, elk and birds. He loved the outdoors.

Survivors include his children, Larry Frizzell of Olympia, Wash., Charles Frizzell of Summerville and Sally Waites of Oregon City; 14 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and other relatives. His wife, two sons, Gary Frizzell and Kenneth Frizzell, a great granddaughter, Dachalyn, one brother and two sisters died earlier.

Jean I. Bean

La Grande

1923-2003

Jean I. Bean of La Grande, died Oct. 23 at her home of natural causes. She was 80.

A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Presbyterian Church, 1308 Washington Ave. Officiating at the service will be Pastor Norman Shrumm.

Inurnment will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery.

Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bean was born Feb. 6, 1923, in Enterprise. She was the daughter off John W. and Katherine A. Dunn Ferdinandsen. As a young girl, she moved with her family to

La Grande, where she was raised and educated.

She graduated from La Grande High School with the Class of 1941 and then attended Eastern Oregon College of Education, now Eastern Oregon University.

She later enlisted in the Navy, where she served her country during World War II as a registered nurse, and a pharmacists’ assistant.

Mrs. Bean had lived at various locations during her life including Fresno and Stockton, Calif.; Roy, Bountiful and Ogden, Utah, and Tempe and Tucson, Ariz., before she moved to Rogue River in 1987.

She had been married to Fred Kobler for a time, and that marriage later ended.

She married Ariel Bean on Sept. 4, 1990, in Rogue River. For most of her life, she had worked in the health care field as a nurse, a clinic office manager and as a physician’s assistant. She was an accomplished seamstress, and also enjoyed reading, cooking and flower gardening. She was a member of the La Grande Presbyterian Church, and had been very active with volunteer work for elderly programs.

Her husband, Ariel Bean, and three sons and their spouses, Paul and Mary Kobler of Arizona, David and Jana Kobler of Mesa, Ariz., and Freddy Kobler of Georgia, survive her. Seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. Her parents, a daughter, two sisters and one brother died earlier.

In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Bean requested that you take a lonely friend out to lunch, give a needy kid a pair of shoes, make a donation to your local youth group, or find in your own way to make this world a better place for someone else.

Patrick Garity

Cove

1946-2003

Patrick Lee Garity, 57, of Cove, died suddenly at his home Oct. 26 of natural causes. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the La Grande Elks Lodge with Father Hank Albrecht officiating.

Fraternal services will be under the auspices of the La Grande Lodge No. 433 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Committal and burial will follow at the Island City Cemetery. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is handling arrangements.

Mr. Garity was born on June 22, 1946, in La Grande, the son of Ben and Loreen Janz Garity. He graduated from La Grande High School in 1964 and from Eastern Oregon University in 1968.

He was manager of the Union-Wallowa-Baker Federal Credit Union for many years and was currently manager of Northwood Homes in Island City. For 20 years he served with the Oregon National Guard.

On May 23, 1986, he married Sue Schwarz Whittemore in Elko, Nev. They lived in La Grande before moving to Cove.

Mr. Garity was a member of the La Grande Elks Lodge and served as exalted ruler during 1976-1977. He was also a member of the La Grande Country Club and was an avid golfer. He enjoyed working in his yard and with his roses.

He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and his original laugh and will be greatly missed by many, family members said.

Survivors include his wife; stepchildren, Heath Richter of Powell Butte and Terra Richter of Union and other relatives. His sister, Sharon Endicott, died

earlier.

Daniel Berg Sr.

La Grande

Daniel Paul Berg Sr., 87, of La Grande died Oct. 25 at a local care center. At his request there will be no public services. Arrangements are with Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Mr. Berg was born Nov. 19, 1915, on Robbs Hill near Perry, the son of Charles and Alice Adey Berg.

On Nov. 17, 1940, he married Mary Christiansen in Walla Walla. They lived in Union County and in Washington state before permanently making their home in La Grande in the early 1950s.

He worked as a checker for Boise Cascade until his retirement in January 1978. His wife preceded him in death in November 1995.

Mr. Berg was an outdoorsman and had a passion for deer and elk hunting. He enjoyed camping, cutting firewood and fishing. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy in his life and they never failed to bring a smile to his face.

He enjoyed playing old-time Western music on the violin in jam sessions with his brother and brother-in-law and also playing for his wife.

Survivors include his children, Daniel Berg Jr. of La Grande and Julie Talor of Summerville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen DeLano of Kennewick, Wash.; and other relatives. Twin sons, Daniel and David, and brother, Cecil Albert Berg, died earlier.

Velma Toney

Formerly of La Grande

1917-2003

Velma Grace Toney, 86, of Reedsport and formerly of La Grande died Oct. 19 at a care center. A memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in La Grande.

Mrs. Toney was born Jan. 25, 1917, to Joseph and Mabel Whitlock McKibben in Cottage Grove. In 1934 she married Harold Toney, and the couple lived first in Haines and later in La Grande where he managed the Bach-Sage Hardware store. She was a homemaker and was the caretaker for her husband’s parents but worked occasionally in the restaurant of the livestock sale yard. She moved to Reedsport in 1998.

She was a member of the Altar Guild at St. Peter’s Church and enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing on the Imnaha or on Catherine Creek, church activities, attending TOPS meetings and spending time with her family, friends, neighbors and her dog.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Cindy Toney of Reedsport; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1984.

Wade Johnson

Formerly of Elgin

1930-2003

Wade Johnson, 73, of Redmond and formerly of Elgin died Oct. 26. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Autumn Funerals is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson was born Aug. 13, 1930, to Charles and Edith Bechtel Johnson in Elgin. He graduated from Elgin High School and served in the Army during the Korean War as a sergeant. He married Connie Elliot in Fallon Nev., and worked as a project manager for Mann Construction in Redmond, and on government-funded projects such as bridges and parks. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working in stained glass.

Survivors include his wife of Redmond; his mother of Wallowa; children, Wade Johnson of Lafayette, Steve Morton of Union, Dan Morton of Prineville, John Paul Beaudoin of California, Steve Beaudoin of Portland, Kathy McCan of Crooked River Ranch, Sally Wolfenbarger of Berlin and Susan Williamson of Elgin; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Wayne Johnson, and a sister, Delores Crow, both of Wallowa.

Frances Karns

Island City

1918-2003

Frances Viola Karns, 84, of Island City died Oct. 29 at her home. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church, 1308 Washington Ave., with the Rev. Norman Shrumm officiating. A private burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mrs. Karns was born Nov. 24, 1918, to Frank and Gladys McClay Sexton in Malin. She graduated from Oregon State University with a teaching degree, and married Harry Karns on Feb. 26, 1943, in Toronto, Canada. He died in 1979.

She taught school in Halfway and worked as a secretary at the naval airbase in Corpus Christi, Texas, at the beginning of World War II. She later worked for the

La Grande School District until her retirement in 1979.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Chapter DK of the PEO Sisterhood, the Grande Ronde Hospital Auxiliary, the Daughters of the Nile, Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, the Retired Teachers Association and the La Grande Country Club. She enjoyed playing bridge, working crossword puzzles, traveling with her children and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Murf and Kathi Karns of Klamath Falls, Patty and Orv Goddard, and Phyllis and Gary Hart, all of La Grande; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Frances Wilson, 90, of La Grande died Thursday at a local care center. Loveland Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Maxine Ingersoll

La Grande

Maxine Ingersoll, 76, of La Grande died Oct. 29 at a local care center. Viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. The funeral will begin at 7 p.m. at the chapel with Pastor Roger Cochran of Trinity Baptist Church officiating. Inurnment will be private.

Mrs. Ingersoll was born July 10, 1927, to Frank and Helen Seely in Billings, Mont. She graduated from high school in St. Mary’s, Idaho, in 1945 and worked as a cook in the Tri-Cities area. She later worked as a cook for the Forest Service and graduated from the University of Idaho in l951. She married Theodore "Ted" Ingersoll on June 10, 1951, in St. Mary’s. She was a homemaker until 1970, when she began working in a bakery in Prescott, Ariz. The family moved to Townsend, Mont., Darby, Mont., and in 1989 to La Grande. She enjoyed flowers, gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of La Grande, four sons, Theodore "Tad" Ingersoll Jr. of Los Angeles, Fred Ingersoll of La Grande, Dan Ingersoll of Mountlake Terrace, Wash., and Jeff Ingersoll of Carefree, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Thirteen brothers and sisters died earlier.

William Lahoda

Joseph

William John Lahoda, 83, of Joseph died Oct. 27 at his home. A memorial service will begin at

2 p.m. Saturday at the Enterprise Christian Church with David Bruce officiating.

Mr. Lahoda was born Jan. 24, 1920, to John and Kathryn Myhaluik Lahoda in Chicago. He served in the Marine Corps and was a member of the Enterprise Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife Lottie Pearl of Joseph, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Leland Ralston

Formerly of Imbler

1945-2003

Leland F. Ralston, 58, of Salem and formerly of Imbler died Oct. 26 of natural causes. The funeral will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday at West Salem Christian Church. A private family interment service will be held.

Mr. Ralston was born Jan. 7, 1945, in San Diego and adopted by Douglas and Marie Ralston. He graduated from Central High School in the Salem area and then Western Oregon School of Education. On Oct. 12, 1965, he married Linda Gransbury, and in 1966 and 1967 served in Vietnam in the 568th Medical Company as a front line medical specialist. In 1974 the family moved to Imbler, where he had his own seed company, and in 1987 to Amity where he was general manager of West Valley Farmers, and in 1993 to Salem where the family bought Bailey Seed Co., which he ran with his son, Troy.

Survivors include his wife of Salem; children, Troy Ralston of Yoder; Bridget Hake of Salem and Tauna Endecott of Chicago; a foster son, Justin Griffith of Bremerton, Wash.; and 14 grandchildren.

Lorene Sarff

Formerly of Elgin

1920-2003

Lorene P. Sarff, 83, of Kennewick and formerly of Elgin, died Oct. 26 at a care center. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hillview Baptist Church, 1621 W. 27th Ave. in Kennewick.

Mrs. Sarff was born Lorene Hester on Sept. 19, 1920, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. On June 11, 1938, she married Bert Sarff in Mead, Wash. In 1967 the couple moved to Elgin, where he taught school and she started her own business, La Raynes Custom Draperies. She enjoyed sewing, fishing, camping, being with her family and enjoying family reunions.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Bruce and Regina Sarff of Wrangell, Alaska, Jim and Sherie Sarff of Mabank, Texas, and Judy and Don Whitley of Kennewick; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ben Hester of Everett, Wash., and Lee Hester of Spokane. Her husband, a brother Lloyd Hester, a sister, Anna Kramer and a

grandson, Joseph Sarff, all died earlier.

‘Gene’ Sissel

Baker City

1931-2003

Calvin "Gene" Sissel, 72, of Baker City died Oct. 29 at St. Elizabeth Health Services. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Baker City Church of the Nazarene. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

Mr. Sissel was born Jan. 29, 1931, to Clellie M. and Willie Alta Mae Brown Maloney Sissel in Exeter, Mo. He attended school in Fruitland, Idaho, and on April 28, 1949, he married Betty Louise Fretwell in Caldwell, Idaho. The couple lived in John Day until 1958 when they moved to Baker City. In 1969, he opened Sissel Plumbing and worked periodically in the La Grande area. He retired in 1993.

He was a firefighter and a member of both the John Day and the Baker City fire departments. He was a member of the Baker County Apprentice Council for 15 years, and was past president of the Oregon Volunteer Firefighter Association and the Baker City Home Builders Association. He had been a Cub Scout master, and taught hunters safety.

When Gene started elk hunting, he and his buddies played cribbage each evening to see who had to get up first in the morning to start the fire and make coffee. Needless to say, Gene quickly learned to be the winner rather than the loser. He became an avid cribbage player and played all over the United States in various tournaments, winning over 60 trophy boards.

Survivors include his wife of Baker City; children and their spouses, Bruce and Lynn Sissel of Edgewood, Wash.; Leslie Ray and Vickie Sissel of Ontario; Leona Fae and Ernie Hutton of Baker City; Tina Marie Sissel Watson of Baker City; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ruthele Una Mae, Betty Jo and Shirley Ann and other relatives. A son, Lyle M. Sissel, died earlier.
