Wanda Adams

Elgin

1926-2004

Wanda E. Adams, 77, of Elgin died Jan. 15 at her home. There will be no public service. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Adams was born Jan. 28, 1926, to William W. and Josephine Smith Moore in Zanesville, Ohio. She married William J. Adams on Feb. 14, 1947, in Zanesville, and lived with her family on Indian reservations in California, Idaho, Washington and Montana.

In 1978 she came to La Grande where she worked as manager of the Cimmaron and Kingsview Apartments. She was a member of the Eagles and enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing bingo, reading and sewing.

Survivors include her son, Jeff Adams of La Grande; six grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. Her husband died earlier.

Kelsen Leonard

Union

2004-2004

Kelsen Eric Leonard, infant son of Thomas and Margaret Witten Leonard of Union, was born and died on Jan. 15 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Cemetery with Bishop Jerry Baxter of the Union Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints officiating. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his parents of Union; a brother, Jordan Arthur Issac Leonard; grandparents, Jay Leonard, Dawn Leonard, Jacqualine Preston and Irv Witten; great grandfather, Earl Powers; aunts and uncles, Andy Witten, Matt Witten, Ben Witten, LaRee Lang, Kevin Lee Leonard and Amanda Marie Leonard, and other relatives.

‘Sara’ Moore

Enterprise

1924-2004

Rosanna "Sara" Moore, 79, of Enterprise died Jan. 16 at her home.

A rosary service will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday Jan. 21 at St. Katherine’s Catholic Church with Father Peter Fernando officiating.

Mrs. Moore was born Aug. 23, 1924, to Jack and Angelina Licavoli Ruffino in Detroit, Mich. On July 9, 1949, she married Victor W. Moore in Detroit. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Katherine’s Church. During World War II she had worked in a factory making airplane parts.

Survivors include her husband of Enterprise; children and their spouses, Michael and Teri Moore, and Kevin Moore, all of Enterprise, Bill and Kim Moore of Eugene, and Mary K. Moore of Joseph; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Don Ruffino and Tony Ruffino, both of Upland, Calif.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s care in care of Bollman’s Funeral Home.

Don Stokke

La Grande

1930-2004

Donald L. "Don” Stokke, 73, a resident of La Grande, died Jan. 14 at a La Grande care center.

Celebration of life services will be held at Loveland Funeral Chapel at 3 p.m. Friday. Private graveside services will follow.

Services will also be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 21 at the Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Veradale, Wash.

Mr. Stokke was born May 29, 1930, in Cathay, N.D., the son of Benard and Rose Wallen Stokke. As a child, he moved with his family to the Hayden Lake, Idaho, area for a time. He later moved to the Spokane Valley, and attended schools there. He graduated from West Valley High School. After school, he enlisted into the Navy.

Mr. Stokke had worked as a firefighter for the Spokane Valley Fire Department for 20 years.

He married Vicki D. Hill on April 12, 1980, in Spokane Valley. He had been married previous to that, and five children were born to the first

marriage.

He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Spokane Valley, and had bowled and was secretary of the Businessman’s Bowling League. His team was named Sports Page Twelve, and he bowled at Player’s and Spectators in the Spokane Valley for over 30 years. He had been a member of the VFW, as well as the Eagles Lodge.

He was president of the Senior Center Pinochle Club in La Grande. He enjoyed

La Grande High School sports, fishing and woodworking with furniture.

He is survived by his wife, Vicki, of La Grande; five children and their spouses, Lynn and Jadizia Stokke of Chanhassen, Minn., Bruce Stokke of Spokane, Debra Stokke of Las Vegas, Cari D. and Keith Zello of West Virginia, and Janie and Dave Jewell of Spokane; two stepchildren and their spouses, Vanessa and George Hagedorn, and Sharon and Brian Waldrop, all of La Grande; two sisters, Yvonne Kovacivich and Murial McMahill, both of Spokane; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.

Robert Boone

Elgin

1945-2004

Robert James Boone, 58, a longtime resident of Union County and sales manager for Northwood Manufacturing Inc., died Jan. 14 of complications of multiple myeloma.

A memorial service was held Saturday at Elgin Christian Church.

Mr. Boone was born Oct. 12, 1945, in Portland to Walter and Betty Lee Bell Boone. The family moved frequently, and Mr. Boone learned early that a well-told story and a good sense of humor would ensure he had friends wherever he lived.

He enlisted in the Navy after graduating from Los Gatos High School in California in 1963. After serving on the U.S.S. Koiner on river patrol duty in Vietnam, he was discharged in Treasure Island, Calif., in 1966.

That year he met his future wife, Lynda Ann Pickering at Ricardo’s Pizzeria, a popular college hangout in San Jose, Calif. They were married two years later on Aug. 4, 1968. The couple loved four-wheeling and camping.

Mr. Boone earned a degree in psychology at California State University in San Jose in 1973 and his teaching credentials in 1974. When Boone spent his last $10 for a salesman’s license, Lynda sent him to Campland RV for the day and warned him to make at least $10 or not come home. He made $100 that day, and his lifelong career as a travel trailer salesman began.

The family later moved to Canby.

Mr. Boone opened Family Recreation Center in Hubbard in 1977. He operated the travel trailer sales lot until 1982, when he went to work for Terry Travel Trailers in La Grande and Michigan.

In 1984 the family moved back to La Grande, where Mr. Boone became active in the Starkey 4×4 Club and served on the volunteer fire department. He started working for Northwood Manufacturing in 1997.

An avid racer, hunter and sportsman, Boone could often be found performing magic tricks for his friends or orchestrating elaborate practical jokes. His humor, work ethic and love for his family were the characteristics that defined his life, family members said.

He is survived by his wife; his children and their spouses, Jake and Shannon Boone, Anna and Frank Meyers, and Becky and her fiance, Paul Terhaar; his father, Walter Boone and his wife, Carolyn Sherman; three grandchildren; and his brothers and sisters, Sharon and Glenn Moore, Joyce and Bob Hubbard, Michael and Iris Boone, and Donna and Bob Fuller.

the First Baptist Church in La Grande.

Virginia Campbell

Cove

1911-2004

Virginia Elizabeth Campbell, 92, of Cove died Jan. 9 at her home. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, 1612 Fourth St.

Mrs. Campbell was born Nov. 12, 1911, to Elizabeth Elvira Griggs and John Hunter Dadisman in Wichita, Kan. From the age of 2 months until she was 13 she lived in China attending an American school managed by her mother. Her father, who was appointed to China as a secretary of the Young Men’s Christian Association, was killed in a boating accident after their first year there, but her mother chose to stay on.

She attended high school in Petaluma, Calif., and earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of California, Berkeley. She married Paul Scott Campbell in 1935, and the couple lived in Eureka, Calif., Portland, Klamath Falls and

La Grande.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, loved music, traveling and gardening. She helped her husband as cook at the Diamond Lake YMCA summer camp when they lived in Klamath Falls, and taught mathematics in California in her later years.

Survivors include sons, John Douglas Campbell of La Grande and Bruce Scott Campbell of Columbia, S.C.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her husband and a son, Robert Duncan Campbell, died earlier. Her only sibling, a brother, died as an infant and is buried in China.

Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church, the East Bay Committee of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia or the Metropolitan Board of the YMCA of Santa Clara County.

Anna Mae Flower

La Grande

1917-2004

Anna Mae Whiting Flower, 86, of La Grande died Jan. 18. Viewing will be from 1 to 6 p.m. today at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at the LDS chapel in Island City, 11206 S. McAlister Road.

Mrs. Flower was born April 11, 1917, to Edward Daniel and Mary Emelia Olsen Whiting at Mount Glenn. She graduated from La Grande High School in 1934 and attended Eastern Oregon Normal School. She taught at Kimberly, Sumpter, La Grande and North Powder before earning a bachelor’s degree at Eastern Oregon College and later a master’s degree at the University of Oregon. She taught grade school and home economics, and was one of the first to be certified as a media specialist in library

science.

On Jan. 17, 1944, she married Jake Cecil Flower in Los Angeles. The couple were later divorced.

She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served in many capacities and received a Leader’s Award. She enjoyed gardening, reading, crocheting afghans, and teaching and playing the piano and organ.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Kay and Joe Hall of Rock Springs, Wyo., Lee and Ann Flower of La Grande, and Keith and Laura Flower of Firth, Idaho; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. A sister, Blanche Quebbeman, a brother, Edward Whiting, two grandchildren, Summer Flower and Autumn Flower, and a great-grandchild, Tanys Flower, all died earlier.

Leon Mawhin

Alder Slope

1904-2004

Leon Mawhin, 99, of Alder Slope died Jan. 15 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital after a short illness. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St. in Enterprise with private family interment at the Enterprise Cemetery.

Mr. Mawhin was born Aug. 12, 1904, to Matthew and Marietta Brun Mawhin in Hoboken, N.J. The family homesteaded near Starbuck, Wash., and in 1913 on 80 acres in Hayden Canyon in Wallowa County. He attended school at the head of OK Gulch.

In 1924 he married Lora Francis and the couple kept a ranch on Alder Slope. He was named Wallowa County Grassman of the Year in 1983 by the Wallowa County Stockgrowers Association, and he was director of the Alder Slope School when his daughters attended the school.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and his garage was full of trophy bull elk and buck horns that would make any hunter envious. He was a master of all trades and did his own electrical, plumbing and building; he could build a saddle, shoe a horse and give a darn good haircut. He remained on his home place on Mawhin Road chopping his own wood, doing the chores and telling stories until his last days. He was known for his wit.

Survivors include children, Reta Bowcut of Fruitland, Idaho, and Marian Birkmaier of Joseph; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. His wife of almost 65 years died earlier.

Catherine Shelton

Catherine Shelton, 94, died this morning at a La Grande care center.

Avis Wilson

Formerly of La Grande

1914-2004

Avis Elaine Wilson, 89, of Pendleton and formerly of La Grande died Jan. 22 at her home. Burial will be at the Eagle Valley Cemetery in Richland. Bishop Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wilson was born Sept. 4, 1914, in Baker City. She was raised in Austin and the Eagle Valley. On Jan. 15, 1934, she married Elton Macy Wilson in Baker City. The couple moved to La Grande in 1944, where they lived for many years before moving to Pendleton in 1985. After her husband’s death she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Darla and Mario Zubiria. She was a homemaker and a member of the Order of Eastern Star where she was a past matron. She enjoyed reading.

Survivors include her daughters and their spouses, Darla and Mario Zubiria of Pendleton, and Paula Pulver of Everett, Wash.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Margaret Higgason

Union

1930-2004

Margaret Higgason, 73, of Union died Jan. 22 at her home. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Union with Father Hank Albrecht officiating. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Higgason was born Feb. 20, 1930, to Hugh and Alma Riepen Cox in Clatskanie. She graduated from Clatskanie High School in 1946, and on June 9, 1961, she married Bryan Higgason in Longview, Wash. The couple moved to Cove in 1961, and to Union in 1964.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Catholic Church. She enjoyed square dancing, the outdoors, trips to the mountains, gardening, traveling to Arizona and supporting her children in their sporting events and other activities.

Survivors include her husband of Union; children and their spouses, Sue and Richard Irvin of Kuna, Idaho, Lynn Murrill of Arlington, Carol and Michael Donnell of Canby, and Bryan and Ariadne Higgason of West New York, N.J.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and other relatives.

A son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Diane Johnson, and a brother, Hugh Richard Cox, all died earlier.

Harriette Melgren

Formerly of La Grande

1913-2003

Harriette Melgren, 90, of Othello, Wash., and formerly of La Grande died Oct. 9. Burial was at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside, Wash.

Mrs. Melgren was born March 8, 1913, to Arthur and May McKinnon Singleton in Albany.

She attended Central Elementary School in La Grande, where she gained a love of music and learned to play the piano. She graduated from La Grande High School, where she was the pianist for the boys choir, and from Eastern Oregon College of Education, where she earned a teaching degree. At college, she composed a march for the band to play at graduation.

She taught in Wallowa County and in Island City. In 1938, she married John Melgren of Mabton, Wash., and the couple lived in Sunnyside, Granger, Wash., Sweet Home, where she put together a harmonica band for children, and Othello, Wash., where she taught adult education and English as a second language at Big Bend Community College. In her later years she played piano for residents at the convalescent center.

She enjoyed making quilts, gardening and traveling. She visited Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, Ireland and Greece, and enjoyed school reunions in La Grande and Island City.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Ted and Joyce Melgren, and Ron and Judy Melgren, all of Othello, and Sharon and Ray Kulback of McMinnville; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and her caregiver of four years, Bernadina "Nana" Villarreal.

A brother, Jack, two sisters, Adah Singleton and Laura Garland, and a daughter, Ruthann Melgren, all died ealier.

Kenneth Twidwell

Formerly of La Grande

1947-2004

Kenneth Neil Twidwell, 56, of The Dalles and formerly of La Grande died Jan. 19 at a Portland hospital of natural causes. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Jan. 31 at The Dalles Senior Center. A memorial service in La Grande will be held at a later date. Columbia Cremation and Burial in The Dalles is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Twidwell was born June 28, 1947, to Marvin and Lorraine Novak Twidwell in La Grande. He graduated from La Grande High School in 1965, and joined the National Guard. He worked at various jobs in La Grande and Baker City and married Juli Ann Holman. He began working for the Oregon Department of Transportation in the early 1970s, and worked in La Grande, Medford, Prospect and The Dalles, where he retired in 1988. He then took on the best job of his life as a stay-at-home-Dad.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, building projects and being with his family. He was a member of The Dalles Rifle and Pistol Club, where he helped with the women’s handgun class and hunter safety education.

Survivors include his wife and daughters, Stephani Ann Twidwell and Ranay Lynn Twidwell, all of The Dalles; his parents; sisters and a brother-in-law, Karen Smith and Kathie and Bob Grove, all of La Grande.
