Mildred "Berniece" Brown, 76, died Jan. 28 at the Hood River Care Center.

A celebration of life will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in the United Methodist, 1612 Fourth St. Officiating at the services will be the Rev. Janet Farrell. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial services were held earlier in Hood River.

She was born in Akron, Colo., on Oct. 1, 1927, the second of three children to Loren and Mary Hughes. Berniece was raised and educated in Stanfield through high school. She attended Oregon State University, where she received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in home economics with a teaching certificate. She taught high school in Brownsville and at a junior college in San Mateo, Calif.

She learned how to drive in a Model A, and much other early driving experience was done in the Columbia River Gorge. She married and had two children, Diana Kay and Marlene Zoe. They lived in the Bay Area for 12 years; in 1969, she moved her girls to Hood River, where she served as the county Extension agent for one year.

The following year, the family moved to La Grande, where she married Will Brown.

Mrs. Brown loved to pack into the mountains. Hunting and fishing were her passion, as was teaching. She continued to teach small classes at a local fabric shop and enjoyed working one on one with students.

She moved to Hood River in 1997 and became a resident of the Hood River Care Center in October 1999. She was loved for her generous spirit and her willingness to help others, family members said, and the staff loved her dearly in return.

She is survived by her husband; her daughters, Diana Beterbide of Hood River and Marlene Ladendorff of Corvallis; her brother, Loren Hughes and his wife, Betty, of La Grande; her sister, Beverly and her husband, Don, of Yuma, Ariz., and numerous nieces and nephews.

‘Vern’ Moore

La Grande

1930-2004

Vernal L. "Vern" Moore, 73, a longtime resident of La Grande, died Friday in Grande Ronde Hospital.

A private celebration of life service will be held later.

Mr. Moore was born Oct. 2, 1930, in La Grande, the son of William and Claire Brooks Moore. Mr. Moore attended schools in Elgin until age 16, when he moved with his family to La Grande, where he graduated from La Grande High School with the Class of 1948.

After high school, he attended Eastern Oregon University for two years before he transferred to Oregon State University, where he graduated in 1953 as a geological engineer.

He married Barbara Hill on Dec. 27, 1952, in Union.

After college, Mr. Moore served in the Air Force. During his time in the service, he had lived in Illinois, and was later transferred to Portland, where he worked as a meteorologist. He was honorably discharged in 1960.

After his discharge, he took his first job as a meteorologist, working in Roseburg for two years before returning to La Grande. While here, he had worked as a geological engineer for the Oregon Department of Transportation. He worked for ODOT for 35 years, and retired in l988.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Eagles and the Association of Engineering Employees. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening as well as playing cards and cribbage. Family members said he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather who always had time for his family.

He is survived by his wife of La Grande; two daughters and their husbands, Pamela and Kenneth Westrope of Ephrata, Wash., and Geri and Don Mikkola of Salem, and three grandchildren. He is also survived by his special cat, Bugsy Tom.

One brother died earlier.

Bill Wingo

Enterprise

1926-2004

Bill Wingo, 77, died at Wallowa Valley Care Center in Enterprise Feb. 7.

A service will start at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Bollman Funeral Home in Enterprise. There will be a private vault interment at Enterprise Cemetery.

Mr. Wingo was born Aug. 17, 1926, in Granite City, Ill., to Albert and Myrtle McFall Wingo.

He married Betty Jean Carbin on Nov. 13, 1946, in Camas, Wash. She died Dec. 14, 1997.

Mr. Wingo was a minister. He moved to Enterprise in 1986 from the Willamette Valley.

Survivors include two daughters, Jeanne Vice of Enterprise and Frances Wingo of Lynnwood, Wash.; two sons, Charlie of Enterprise and Donald of Salem; a sister, Edith Lloyd of Harrison, Ark.; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A brother, Robert, died earlier.

‘Cap’ Myer

La Grande

1904-2004

Arnold "Cap" Myer, 99, of La Grande died Feb. 8 at a local care center. Viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor Mouse McKinney officiating. Burial will follow at the Island City Cemetery.

Mr. Myer was born Oct. 18, 1904, to William and Cora Kincaid Myer in Burner, W. Va. He worked in a glass factory and sawmills and served in the Navy.

In 1925 he married Beulah Brand, the girl next door, and the family moved to Detroit, Mich., where he ran a riding academy and served as a deputy sheriff for Wayne County.

In 1942 the family moved to La Grande, where he joined the police department and once served as interim chief. He retired in 1970 as a captain after 26 years.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge and was an avid hunter, expert marksman who won several medals in statewide shooting contests and an accomplished gunsmith.

He played the guitar and enjoyed playing for dances, along with his wife who played the piano. The family often held jam sessions in their home.

He was a devout Christian and enjoyed watching TV evangelists.

He also enjoyed feeding squirrels, especially during his years at Wildflower Lodge.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Russ Myer and Theresa Smyth of Red Bluff, Calif., Robert and DeAnn Myer of La Grande, Jim Myer of Boise, June and Roy Pierce of Longview, Wash., and Barbara Duncan of Vancouver, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

His wife, a son, Edward Lee, and two brothers, Forest and Hobert, all died earlier.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oregon Fire Museum in care of Daniels Chapel.

Allen Carter, 79, of Union died Wednesday at the home of his daughter. Arrangements are pending, and a full obituary will follow. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Roe

Formerly of La Grande

Mildred Anna Dodge Roe, 90, of Baker City and formerly of La Grande died Feb. 10. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Cemetery. A full obituary will be published later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Dr. Bryce Young

Formerly of La Grande

1930-2004

Dr. Bryce J. Young, 73, of College Place, Wash., and formerly of La Grande died Feb. 4 in an accident while bicycling in Argentina. A service will begin at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2702 Adams Ave.

Dr. Young was born June 3, 1930, to Bryce L. and Marjorie Mallett Young in Glendive, Mont. He graduated from high school in Miles City, Mont., and attended Walla Walla College. He received his medical training at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, Calif., and his eye specialist’s training at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles. On Sept. 28, 1958, he married Joylyn Jennings. He practiced medicine in Missoula, Mont., Roseburg and La Grande. He retired in 1992 after 31 years.

He traveled extensively including to the Middle East and Africa, making several mission trips to Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe. He sailed by himself across the Pacific Ocean and made trips to the Philippines and Argentina on bird-watching expeditions. He enjoyed visiting family, going on walks with his grandchildren, hiking and backpacking. He was a member of Rotary International.

Survivors include his children, David Young of Longview, Wash., Karen Young of Seattle and Russell Young of College Place; two grandchildren; a sister, Ginger Mackie of Cove and other relatives. His wife died earlier.

‘Glen’ Doud

Formerly of La Grande

1962-2004

Carl "Glen" Doud Jr., 41, of Toledo and formerly of La Grande died Jan. 27 of natural causes. Bateman Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements. No services are planned.

Mr. Doud was born Aug. 10, 1962, to Carl and Geraldine Doud in La Grande.

Survivors include his partner, Sandra Teigen of Toledo; his father of Baker City; a son, Dale Doud of Newport; and two sisters, Annette Lane of Newport and Dorla Doud of Baker City. His mother and a brother, Dale Randall, both died earlier.
