La Grande

Robert H. Ottersberg, 54, of La Grande died Thursday at his home after a long illness. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Old Meeting House, 901 M. Ave., with David Arnold officiating. A potluck gathering will follow at Gangloff Park.

Memorials may be made to the Native Plant Society, in care of Dick Kenton, 1805 U. Ave., La Grande 97850.

‘Winnie’ Gray

La Grande

1919-2004

Wanda "Winnie" Gray, 85, of La Grande died March 5 at her home. The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. A reception will follow at the log cabin at the Union County Fairgrounds.

Mrs. Gray was born Feb. 10, 1919, in Minneapolis, Minn. She graduated from Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Fla., in 1936 and moved to Kansas City, Mo., where she married Orval Gray on June 15, 1941. The couple lived in Albany and she moved to La Grande in 1997 to be near family.

She worked as a bookkeeper and legal secretary and as an administrative assistant at Oregon State University. She retired in 1981.

She loved the coast, mountains, forests, lakes and streams of Oregon and enjoyed camping, sightseeing, wildlife, wildflowers, fishing, travel, swimming and working in her flowerbeds.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Kenneth and Elizabeth Gray of Mukilteo, Wash., and Mary Hoverson of La Grande; one grandchild; a sister, Frances Prieto of Ashland; and other relatives. Her husband, three sisters and a brother all died earlier.

Linda Grove

Formerly of La Grande

Linda Grove, 60, of Portland and formerly of La Grande, died Monday in a Portland care center. Services are pending, and a full obituary will follow. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Dan Cable

Elgin

1922-2004

Dan Cable, 82, of Elgin died March 5 at his home. At his request no service will be held.

Mr. Cable was born Jan. 13, 1922, to William and Janet Ray Cooper Cable in Weston. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1945 stationed in Panama and married Lois Marie Spencer in Lewiston, Idaho, in 1946. In 1962 the couple moved to Elgin, where he worked for Boise Cascade until his retirement in 1984. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of Elgin; children, Daniel Cable of Elgin and Gloria Anthoney of Lacey, Wash.; two grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Karen Cable of Milton-Freewater; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Wesley and Boots Churchill of Elgin. Two sisters, Jean Curry and Eunice Benzel, and a brother, Vern Cable, all died earlier.

Christopher Fahlgren

La Grande

1983-2004

Christopher Carl Fahlgren, 20, of La Grande and formerly of Pendleton, died Feb. 26 in a fire at his apartment. A celebration of life will begin at noon Friday in the main lounge at Hoke Center at Eastern Oregon University. Students are encouraged to bring pictures, stories or memories to share.

Mr. Fahlgren was born June 2, 1983, to Brian and Jodie Fahlgren in Pendleton. He graduated from Pendleton High School and was a student at EOU where he was majoring in multimedia. He excelled in computers and graphic arts.

Survivors include his parents of Pendleton; a grandmother, Lois Fahlgren, and grandparents, Fred and Karen Frazier.

‘Jack’ Copenhaver

Imbler

1922-2004

Floyd Ronald "Jack" Copenhaver, 81, of Imbler died March 8 at the home of his daughter.

A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the Wilbur Cemetery in Wilbur, Wash., with Pastor Rob Wilson of the Community Presbyterian Church in Wilbur officiating. Viewing will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church.

Mr. Copenhaver was born Aug. 27, 1922, to Raymond and Beulah Miller Copenhaver in Wilbur. He graduated from Wilbur High School and served in the Merchant Marine. On Dec. 13, 1947, he married Lorraine Schoolcraft. After her death in 1978, he married Delores Warrington in September 1979. She died in 2000.

He worked as a heavy-equipment operator and worked on the natural gas pipeline from Spokane to Portland. The family lived in Arlington during the construction of Interstate 84. He moved to Imbler last year to be near his daughters.

He served as mayor and on the city council in Wilbur, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Shriners, the V.F.W. and the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and being with people. He had a wonderful smile.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Clifford and Diana Copenhaver of Salem, Jackie and Jim McDonald of Imbler, Lora "Olie" Copenhaver-McDougall of La Grande, and Carol and Randy West of Union; a brother, Deb Copenhaver of Creston, Wis.; two sisters, Norma Echelbarger-Slater, and Barbara Griggs, both of Spokane; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

‘Arti’ Parker-Casavant

Summerville

1932-2004

Artis "Arti" Parker-Casavant, 71, of Summerville died March 2 at her home. A celebration of life will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., with Pastor Mouse McKinney of the Church of the Nazarene officiating.

Mrs. Parker-Casavant was born Nov. 2, 1932, to Arthur and Lydia Gifford in Long Beach, Calif. After high school she had worked for Southern California Gas for 18 years as an interior designer and for Busco Engineering in El Segundo, Calif. for 10 years.

She moved to La Grande and worked as office manager for OTEC.

She was a member of the Eagles Lodge and enjoyed cooking, home improvement projects, gardening, watching birds and wildlife, fishing and camping on the Snake River.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Casavant of Summerville; stepchildren and their spouses, Terry and Sandy Parker and Pamela Parker-Sharp; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; a sister, Francis; and a sister-in-law, Margarite.

Susan Spangler

La Grande

1947-2004

Susan Elizabeth Spangler, 57, of La Grande died of natural causes March 5 at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at McKenzie Theatre on the campus of Eastern Oregon University with a reception to follow in the theatre lobby.

Ms. Spangler was born Feb. 8, 1947, in Washington, D.C., and was raised in Rockville, Md. She graduated from Ohio State University in 1969 with a B.A. in Spanish and in 1975 with a B.S. in nursing. She married Robert Rubin and the couple were later divorced. She had two children with Morgan C. Davie.

She worked at hospitals in Ohio and Corvallis, and for the Benton County Health Department. Among other things, she was coordinator of the communicable disease-refugee health programs and also volunteered for the Sunflower House free clinic, a community outreach facility.

In 1993 the family moved to La Grande, where she earned a master’s degree through the Oregon Health & Science University School of Nursing. She was certified as a family nurse practitioner in 1995 and began teaching at the OHSU School of Nursing. She spearheaded the establishment of the Union County Healthy Start Program and served on the Early Childhood Planning and the Union County Health and Human Services advisory committees. She worked at the student health clinic at EOU and the Public Health Department clinic, and later provided medical care at the Union County jail.

She enjoyed hiking, cross-country skiing, gardening, cooking, reading, movies, concerts and traveling to such places as Turkey, Iran, Belize, Afghanistan and nearly all 50 states.

Survivors include a daughter, Vanessa Jean Spangler Davie of La Grande, and a son, Ian Muir Spangler Davie of California; her brothers and their wives, George and Susan Spangler, of Gaithersburg, Md., Robert Spangler of Charles Town, W.Va., and Louis Bernard Hammett of Sunderland, Md.; Morgan Davie, her former domestic partner and the father of her children; Robert Rubin of Waldport, from whom she

was divorced in 1980; and other relatives.

‘Gene’ Sullivan

La Grande

1915-2004

Eugene Sullivan, 88, of La Grande died March 7 at his home. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., with the Rev. Mark Schlessman of the First Christian Church officiating.

Mr. Sullivan was born May 26, 1915, to Louis and Esther Watkins Sullivan in Parsons, Kan. He was raised and educated in Parsons and Chicago, and served in the Army during World War II and worked as a toolmaker in Massachusetts, and a window-dresser and decorator in Oakland, Calif. He was an accomplished artist, especially of oil paintings of snow scenery, and some of his paintings were on display in a Chicago museum. During the Great Depression, he sold oil paintings to support his mother and sister.

On Oct. 7, 1971, he married Maria Ihl in Honolulu. The couple lived in Clearlake, Calif., Oakland, Calif. and Santa Rosa, Calif., before they moved to

La Grande last year.

He was a world traveler, having gone on 21 cruises with his wife, Maria, and especially loved Italy. He was a true gentleman, always courteous, clean and

organized.

He was a quiet man with a mischievous sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife of La Grande; a sister, Virginia August of Clearlake; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Renate and John Gray of Hilgard; a stepson, Al Jedraskiewiez, and other relatives.

Celena Ruckman

La Grande

1911-2004

Celena H. Ruckman, 92, of La Grande died March 8 at a local care center. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., with Pastor Elmer Yoder of the Cove United Methodist Church officiating.

Mrs. Ruckman was born Oct. 17, 1911, to Edward and Indah Burns Lane in Clear Lake, Okla. She attended school in Siloam Springs, Okla., and married Ernest Gann. The couple moved to Prineville in the mid-1930s, then in 1941 to Vancouver, Wash., where her husband joined the Merchant Marines. They moved to Arkansas in 1945 and later back to Oregon. After his death she married Clark Ruckman in 1984 at the Union County Senior Center. She was a member of a knitting club in Cove, and enjoyed traveling, gardening, crochet and rock collecting.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Carol and Wayne Stephens of Cove, and Kay Piper of El Cajon, Calif.; a stepson, Mike Ruckman of La Grande; two sisters, Lucille Graves of Vancouver and Geneva Baggs of Portland; a brother, Calvin Lane of Vancouver; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and other relatives. A brother and her second husband both died earlier.

Darrell Cross

Formerly of La Grande

1949-2004

Darrell Gene Cross, 55, of Seaside and formerly of La Grande died March 8. No cause of death was listed. A celebration of his life was held in Seaside.

Mr. Cross was born Feb. 5, 1949, to Ralph and Juanita Cross in La Grande. He attended schools in The Dalles and graduated from the University of California Berkeley.

He worked as a real estate broker in Roslyn, Wash., Gleneden Beach, Eagle Crest Resort in Redmond, and in Seaside for Trendwest Resorts. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time with his friends.

Survivors include his companion, Jan Pinardi of Seaside; children, Bridget Cross of Beaverton and Darren Cross of Astoria; five grandchildren; his mother of Salem; two brothers, Herb Ames of Cottage Grove and Danny Cross of Battleground, Wash. His father died earlier.

Jane Hamm

La Grande

1923-2004

Jane Dolores Hamm, 80, of La Grande died March 10 at her home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Hank Albrecht at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. Private inurnment will take place later.

Mrs. Hamm was born Sept. 30, 1923, to Carl and Florence McElroy Schultz in San Francisco. Her father died shortly after her birth, and she was raised by her mother and stepfather, Frank Hobson, a San Francisco police detective. She attended San Francisco State College and joined the Marine Corps in 1943. She married William D. Hamm, also a Marine, in 1945 in New Bern, N.C. He died in 1965.

The couple lived in Hermiston and Pendleton, where she worked at the Umatilla County Library from 1966 until 1970. She moved to Boca Raton, Fla., in 1971 and later moved back to Oregon, working in both Pendleton and La Grande as a housekeeper at Catholic rectories. She later worked for Equifax and was assistant manager of Camlu in Pendleton.

She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and served as a hospice volunteer. She was an accomplished concert pianist, a voracious reader and an excellent cook. She enjoyed playing bridge, and feeding and watching animal friends. She was devoted to her family and will be remembered as a lady of grace.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Walter and Nancy Hamm of Pendleton, Barbara and Jim Brown, Sara Jane Williamson and Joseph Hamm and his companion, Glenis Harrison, all of La Grande; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A sister, Barbara Stevens Throolin of Boca Raton, Fla., died earlier

Mildred Winters

La Grande

1905-2004

Mildred Maude Winters, 99, of La Grande died March 12 at her home. At her request there will be no public service. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mrs. Winters was born Jan. 29, 1905, to Lyman and Stella Weeks in Pleasanton, Neb. The family moved to La Grande in 1910, and she graduated from La Grande High School.

On June 3, 1926, she married Ray Winters in La Grande. He died in 1966.

She was a member and Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of the Daughters of the Nile. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include her brother and his wife, Harold and Ursula Weeks of Denver; a sister-in-law, Alaire Fagerstrom of Sisters; a nephew, Donald Weeks of Pahoa, Hawaii, and other relatives.
