Baker City

Charles W. Phegley Jr., 72, a Baker City councilor, died Aug. 13 in Boise. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 18 at the First Church of the Nazarene in Baker City with Pastor Roger Scovil officiating.

John Suydam

Formerly of La Grande

1949-2004

John Philip Suydam, 54, of Newport News, Va., and formerly of La Grande died Aug. 12 of natural causes. Services will be in Abingdon, Ill. Hinchliff Pearson West Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Suydam was born Nov. 29, 1949, to William "Mike" and Muriel Irons Suydam in Galesburg, Ill. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., and later taught music there. He was also a music critic for the St. Louis Post Dispatch newspaper and played piano one summer for the St. Louis Municipal Orchestra. He moved to La Grande in 2001 where he worked at the Electronic Resource Center in Pierce Library at Eastern Oregon University. He recently moved to Newport News.

Survivors include his mother of Galesburg; a sister and her husband, Tina and Randy Hartz of Abingdon; and other relatives. His father died earlier.

Treve Lumsden

La Grande

1925-2004

Dr. Treve Berlin Lumsden, age 78, of La Grande, died Aug. 14 at home with his family after an extended illness.

Dr. Lumsden was born on Nov. 3, 1925, in Los Angeles to Lucile Messner and Treve Berlin Lumsden. The family moved to La Grande when he was 12 and Treve graduated from La Grande High School. He joined the Navy and under the c-12 program completed pre-med training at Willamette University, after which he attended and graduated from Tulane University Medical School in New Orleans.

Doctor Lumsden went on to serve as a flight surgeon for the Air Force during the Korean War. Returning to Seattle, he was a resident at Providence Hospital, where he met his wife, Patricia Welsh. They were married in La Grande on June 25, 1951, and Dr. Lumsden began his medical practice that same year. He served the community for 49 years and was a member of the AMA and a fellow of the Academy of Family Practice. He was actively involved with Northwest Medical Teams as a volunteer, traveled with them to northern Iraq, Somalia and Panama to provide humanitarian aid.

Survivors include his wife and three children, Kathleen Lumsden de Torres of Rochester, N.Y., Treve Bernard Lumsden of Beaufort, N.C. and Heide Ann Thomas of Cove; sister, Anne Kirkpatrick of Baker City; and seven grandchildren.

At the request of the deceased there will be no public services. Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House or Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church youth program, care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street, La Grande 97850.

Helen B. Irish

Formerly of Union

1913-2004

Helen B. Irish, 90, formerly of Union, died Aug. 14 at her home in La Grande.

At her request there will be no public service. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is handling arrangements.

Helen was born Dec. 5, 1913, the daughter of Charles and Helen Evens Smith in Marshalltown, Iowa. Helen was raised in Iowa before moving to Southern California in 1939. In 1947, she married Robert Irish in Las Vegas. They were married for 52 years until her husband’s death in February 1999.

Shortly after her husband’s death she moved to Union where she lived with her son until April 2003 when she moved to La Grande. She enjoyed watching children play baseball and was a part of Little League for many years.

She is survived by her son, Michael Irish of Union, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma McCluen, and two brothers, Harold and Howard Smith.

Donald Earl Kelly

Union

1928-2004

Donald Earl Kelly, age 75, died Aug. 13 at his home in Union. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley with Sally Wiens officiating. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Donald Earl Kelly was born Aug. 25, 1928, the son of Percy and Cecelia (Evenson) Kelly in Seattle. He graduated from West Seattle High School where he was an outstanding football player. Donald enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country in the Korean War. After his service to his country, he resided in Southern California for most of his life except for a short time when he moved to La Grande. He worked as a mechanic as well as a plumber before a disability prevented him from working. Donald enjoyed old cars, hunting and woodworking. He was always playing tricks on his family and friends.

Survivors include his sister; Lorain Kelly of La Grande, brother Arthur F. Kelly of La Grande; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. His parents and a sister, Mary Raffensberger, preceded him in death.

Chuck Phegley

Baker City

1932-2004

Charles Wesley Phegley Jr. died suddenly Aug. 13 of natural causes. His funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Nazarene Church, 1250 Hughes Lane in Baker City. A reception will follow at the church. Gray’s West and Company is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Phegley was born April 14, 1932, to Charles Wesley and Leolia Pearl Phegley in The Dalles. He graduated from high school in 1950 and served in the Army during the Korean War. He worked as a logger, for the last 34 years with his own company. He was twice recognized as the Eastern Oregon Region Forest Practices Operator of the Year. He served on the school board and city council in Halfway and the Baker County Planning Commission, and was currently serving on the Baker City Council. He was involved in Work and Witness programs supporting local missionary efforts in Arizona, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Western Samoa, Mexico and Ukraine.

Survivors include his wife Wilma of Baker City; children and their spouses, Karri and Patrick Ryan of Meridian, Idaho, Craig and Melody Davis of Baker City and Wes Phegley of Wallowa; four grandchildren; stepchildren David Ritch and Suzie Twiss; and other relatives. A brother, James Phegley, died earlier.

Frieda Stauffer

Union

1914-2004

Frieda Louise Stauffer, 90, of Union died Aug. 11 at her home. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the Union United Methodist Church with Pastor Jerry Peters officiating.

Mrs. Stauffer was born April 22, 1914, to Fred and Olive Skiff Brown in Union, the descendants of pioneers. The Skiff family homesteaded in Union County in 1863 with the Moes and McAlisters. Another branch, the Haynes family, settled in Union in 1875. In the 1920s it was said she was related to almost every family in town, including Baird, Brasher, Brown, Courtright, Dotson, Haynes, Hess, Lilje, McAlister, Moe, Moss, Nodine, Phillips, Seamans, Skiff, Spray, Taylor and Titus, among others.

She attended school in Union and graduated from business college in Spokane in 1934. She was assistant postmaster under Lee Chenault from 1934 to 1942. On Oct. 2, 1942, she married Roy Stauffer in Lincoln, Neb. The couple lived in Portland and Eugene, and returned to Union in 1957. She was acting postmaster from 1966 to 1968.

She was a member of the Union United Methodist Church, where she was the church organist; the Union County Museum Association; the Daughters of the American Revolution; and several environmental groups. She enjoyed gardening, traveling and being involved with the church.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Larry Mitchell of Portland, and other relatives.

Cassie Louise Vann

La Grande

1919-2004

Cassie Louise Vann, 85, of La Grande and formerly of the Lewiston, Idaho, area, died Aug. 15 at a local care facility.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Hillcrest East Cemetery with The Rev. Mark Schlessman of the La Grande First Christian Church officiating. Fraternal services will be under the auspices of Hope Chapter No. 13 Order of Eastern Star. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Cassie Louise Cone was born on April 25, 1919 at Hillsboro, the first of the three children of Fred M. and Eva M. Cone. She spent her early life in Washington, graduating from Woodland High School in 1936. She moved to Portland, where she worked for the Greyhound Company.

She married Justin Ammer on Dec. 7, 1946. Justin was a pharmacist and they lived in Craigmont, Idaho, where they owned and operated the drugstore. Justin Ammer died in October, 1956. Cassie married Charles Vann on Sept. 19, 1959, and they moved to La Grande in 1965, where Charles worked for Boise Cascade and Cassie worked for Gilco, Inc.

Charles Vann died May 16, 1997. Cassie continued to make her home in La Grande.

She is survived by her son, Greg Ammer of La Grande; two step-children, Carole Wagner of Craigmont, Idaho and Larry Vann of Ashland; her sister, Cathy Williams of Woodburn; her brother, Roger D. Cone of Edmonds, Wash.; a granddaughter; eight step-grandchildren; a great-grandson; and nine step- great grandchildren.

Cassie held membership in the First Christian Church in La Grande and was an active member. She was also an active member of Hope Chapter No. 13 Order of Eastern Star and of the Laurette Alpha Omnicron Sorority.

Marjorie McGraw

Enterprise

1926-2004

Marjorie McGraw, 77, of Enterprise died Aug. 16 at her home. A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the Enterprise Cemetery.

Mrs. McGraw was born Dec. 8, 1926, to Dale and Alice Long Nobles in Enterprise. She married LeRoy McGraw on April 25, 1946. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Kirk and Carol McGraw of West Linn, and Russ and Karleen Gomes of Enterprise; a sister and brother-in-law, Billie and Clyde Warner of Oceanside, Calif., a sister-in-law, Gladys Nobles of Enterprise, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and other relatives. Her husband died earlier.

Maxine Prince

Formerly of Wallowa

1935-2004

Maxine A. Prince, 69, of Pendleton and formerly of Wallowa died Aug. 17 at St. Anthony Hospital. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the Wallowa Cemetery. Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Prince was born Feb. 23, 1935, to William H. and Stella M. Stumbaugh Hammack in La Grande. She graduated from Wallowa High School in 1953, and on Aug. 22, 1953, she married Donald Prince in Wallowa. In 1980 she became a hair dresser, and continued to work as a beautician after moving to Pendleton in 1992.

Survivors include her husband of Pendleton; children and their spouses, Patti and Jim Tippet of Wallowa, Teona and Rans Golden of Pilot Rock, Chandra Wilson of Hillsboro, Kenny Prince of Milton-Freewater and Delwyn Prince of Stanfield; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister and her husband, Myrna and Richard Chavez of Pendleton. A granddaughter, Jennifer Prince, died earlier.
