Rosalie Cordell

Rosalie B. Cordell, 85, of Durkee and formerly of Elgin died Dec. 30 at a local care center. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Jan. 4 at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Gilliland Cemetery in Sweet Home.

Mrs. Cordell was born Aug. 31, 1919, to Henry and Mary Henderson Reandeau in Hennessy, Okla. She lived in Sweet Home, Elgin and, for the last few years, in Durkee.

She enjoyed working in her garden, crochet and visiting with family.

Survivors include children, Faye Thomas of Elgin, Duane Cordell of Sweet Home, Jean Huston of Durkee, Charlene Forcum and La Rayne Edwards, both of Eugene, and Nancy Mae Brill of Vancouver, Wash.; 23 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Thelma Haddock, Darlene Brown and Lenora Lund, all of Primrose, Calif; two brothers, Richard Reandeau of Elgin and Ronald Reandeau of Arkansas.

William Jones

Formerly of Cove and La Grande

1915-2004

William Robert Jones, 89, of Prineville and formerly of Cove and La Grande, died Dec. 30 at home. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Prineville Christian Church, 1685 S.E. Lynn Blvd. A graveside service will begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Grandview Cemetery in La Grande.

Mr. Jones was born to William and Ada Rockwell Jones on April 28, 1915, in Bader, Ill. On May 29, 1938, he married Ruth Sundberg in Astoria, Ill. He graduated from Central Washington School of the Bible, and served as the pastor of the Wasco Church of Christ from 1958 until 1969, when the family moved to the La Grande and Cove area where they farmed for 30 years. He attended the Elgin Christian Church. In 1999 he moved to Prineville. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening, raising crops, preaching and reading his Bible.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Barbara and Ridgley Ireland of Arcadia, Calif., Robert and Karen Jones of Prineville, and Philip and Judi Jones of Canyonville; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley Rittenhouse of Rushville, Ill. His wife and a son, Thomas, died earlier.

Mary Logan

Formerly of La Grande

1913-2004

Mary Logan, 91, of Citrus Heights, Calif., and formerly of La Grande, died Dec. 30. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ, 2107 Gekeler Lane. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mrs. Logan was born April 17, 1913, to William Johnson and Georgia Margaret Luce Hunter in Spur, Texas. On Feb. 22, 1950, she married Marvin C. Logan in Reno, Nev. The couple moved to La Grande from California in April of 1964.

She was a member of the La Grande Church of Christ and the Royal Neighbors. She enjoyed cooking, tending her roses and jet skiing.

Survivors include children, George Butler of Citrus Heights, and Richard Butler of Port Orchard, Wash.; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Joe Hunter of Phoenix, Ariz., and Willie Hunter of Scottsdale, Ariz. Her husband, a brother, John Hunter and two sisters, Frankie Evans and Selma Spreg, all died earlier.

Michael Hall

Formerly of La Grande

1951-2004

Michael Hall, 53, of Olympia, Wash., and formerly of La Grande died Dec. 15 of natural causes. A memorial service will be held later in Olympia.

Mr. Hall was born July 4, 1951, in La Grande. He graduated from La Grande High School and tied for first place in his age group in a regional fencing tournament. He attended Eastern Oregon College and taught a fencing class there. He served in the Oregon National Guard for six years and had a motorcycle dealership, first in La Grande and later in Olympia.

Survivors include his wife, Debbie, and children, Lindsey and Landon Hall, all of Olympia; a sister, Annette Garrick of Rochester, Wash., and his father, Dr. Alan Hall of La Grande.

Memorials may be made to the Blue Mountain Humane Association.

Eleanor V. Clark, 88, of San Bernardino, Calif., and formerly of La Grande, died recently at a care center in San Bernardino.

Fanny Halsey

Elgin

1914-2004

Frances O. "Fanny" Halsey, 90, of Elgin died Jan. 2 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Elgin Christian Church. A lunch will be served at the Stampede Hall.

Mrs. Halsey was born Oct. 28, 1914, to Frank and Ruth Throe Rynearson in Island City. On July 6, 1931, she married Jack K. Halsey in Joseph. The family lived on Cricket Flat and moved to Elgin in 1953.

She worked at a fabric shop in Elgin for many years and was a member of the Sons and Daughters of Oregon Pioneers, a past member of the Elgin Stampeders and the Cricket Flat Grange.

Her father was believed to be the first boy born to pioneers in La Grande. Her grandfather and uncle were blacksmiths and made the first plow used in Union County. She enjoyed her home, her yard and all children.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Barbara Rooselet of El Paso, Texas, Loyde and Betty Knapp of Elgin, and Jeffery and Milla Halsey of Elgin; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives. Her husband, two brothers, a sister, a son, Jerald, and a granddaughter, Laura Calder, all died earlier.

Mathew Jenks

Elgin

Mathew Paul Jenks, 23, of Elgin died Jan. 1 at his home. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., with the Rev. Jesse Parker of the Lighthouse Pentecostal Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Elgin Cemetery.

Mr. Jenks was born July 7, 1981, to James and Betty Jones Jenks in La Grande. He attended school in Elgin and enjoyed hunting and working on his pick-up.

Survivors include his parents of Elgin; grandparents, Garner and Betty Stephens of McMinnville, and Gayline Jones of Eugene; siblings, Amy, Andrew and Michael Jenks, all of Elgin; and other relatives.

Ruth Reynolds Preston

Formerly of Elgin

Ruth J. Reynolds Preston, 83, of Woodburn and formerly of Elgin, died Oct. 7. Burial was at Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Preston was born Jan. 13, 1921, to Clarence Edgar and Margaret Elizabeth Barnes Merritt in Elgin. She graduated from the University of Oregon and performed on the radio and for the USO during World War II.

On Jan. 3, 1945, she married Donald Lee Reynolds. The family lived in Texas, Seattle and Salem. After his death she married Philip G. Preston on Dec. 26, 1969. The couple lived in Salem until moving to Woodburn recently to live with family.

Survivors include her husband of Woodburn; a son, Don M. Reynolds; a step-son, John Preston; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Linda Lee Anderson

Formerly of Elgin

1947-2004

Linda Lee Anderson, 57, formerly of Elgin, died Dec. 30 at her home in Oroville, Calif., of natural causes.

A celebration will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley with Pastor Bill Miller officiating. A private interment will be held at the Elgin Cemetery.

Anderson was born on July 9, 1947 the daughter of Glenn B. and Louise Bowden Long in La Grande. She spent her early childhood on the family ranch near Elgin until the family moved to La Grande for a short time before settling in West Linn, where Anderson graduated from West Linn High School with the Class of 1967.

On Aug. 15, 1981, she married Kent O. Anderson in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho. Together the couple traveled the world as Kent’s job took them from place to place. They lived in Pasco, ; Nashville; Florida; New York; Connecticut; Mexico and the West Coast before settling in Oroville in 2002.

She was one of the first open heart surgery patients at the age of 6 and was a past vice president of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary in Richland, Wash.

Anderson enjoyed arts, crafts, playing the accordion, square dancing, camping, fishing, the outdoors and her two cats, Cally and Jo Jo.

She is survived by her husband of Oroville; brother and his spouse, Rocky and Cheryl Long of Oregon City; sisters-in-law, Karen M. and Ila Anderson of Chehalis, Wash.; brothers-in-law and their spouses, Ronald and Pat Anderson of Pasco, Neil and Betty Anderson of Kennewick, nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Manuel Oliver Jr.

La Grande

Manuel Lee "Chip" Oliver Jr.,

54 of La Grande, died Jan. 5 at his home of natural causes.

A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the La Grande Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Brent Clapp officiating.

Mr. Oliver was born on May 5, 1950, the son of Manuel L. and Pearl "Wanda" Wood Oliver in Baker City. He attended schools in Baker City and The Dalles and graduated from David Douglas High School in Portland. He came to La Grande in 1978 from Molalla.

On Sept. 24, 1983, he married Deborah Lumsden. He worked as an engineer for Union Pacific Railroad, loved carpentry and woodworking. He also enjoyed remodeling homes, managing investment property and was a handyman.

He loved traveling and was well read. His greatest joy came from time with his family, and he had a true passion for life. Mr. Oliver was an outdoorsman and enjoyed sailing, whitewater rafting, skiing and golfing.

Survivors include his wife of La Grande; children, David E. Oliver of La Grande and Shelly Oliver and her husband, Dan Hill, of Hillsboro; two grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Garland "Kip" and Gay Oliver of Woodland, Wash.; mother, Wanda Oliver of Woodland; father and his wife, Manuel and Nellie of Warrenton; and other relatives.

‘Momo’ Hoover

Formerly of La Grande

1926-2005

Ruth L. "Momo" Hoover, 78, of Umatilla County and formerly of La Grande died Jan. 1 at Good Samaritan Center in Hermiston. Funeral services were held Jan. 5.

Mrs. Hoover was born Feb. 15, 1926, to Frank and Anna Mae Bashor Britain in Pendleton. On Jan. 8, 1945, she married Homer E. Hoover.

The couple lived in Pendleton until 1950 when they moved to La Grande. She moved back to Pendleton for a short time only to move back to La Grande.

She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and for years was a deaconess, always ready and willing to help when asked. She enjoyed the Portland Trail Blazers, staying at the beach, sewing, playing pinochle and Yahtzee, and spending time at the family camp in the mountains. She was never out of contact with her five brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include daughters, Diana Struntz of Hermiston and Carol Boothe of Astoria; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles Britain of La Grande and Virgil Britain of Aberdeen, Wash.; and sisters, Edna Peterson of Pendleton and Patricia Massie of Hermiston.

Three brothers, Gene, Jack and Frank Britain, and a sister, Marie Blakley, all died earlier.

Millie Clark

Formerly of La Grande

1911-2005

Millie M. Clark, 93, of Milton-Freewater and formerly of La Grande died Jan. 5 at a care center.

The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., in Milton-Freewater with Pastor David Miller of the Helix Community Church officiating.

Private burial will be in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

Mrs. Clark was born Sept. 11, 1911, to John and Myrtle E. Carr Justus in Nebraska. In her mid-20s she moved to Oregon. She raised six children by herself starting in 1944. She held a number of jobs to pay the bills and keep the family together. Her mother-in-law, Eva Mae Clark, lived near her and helped care for the younger children. She cared for her mother-in-law the last several years of her life.

She received her teaching certificate from Eastern Oregon College in 1954, and taught in Gibbon, Milton-Freewater and Helix, where she worked until the age of 65. In 1988 she moved to a retirement center and then to a care center.

She was a member of the Helix Community Church where she taught an adult Sunday school class, and had other leadership roles in the community. After retirement, she served as librarian at the Helix Library for several years. She was a member the Ladies Aid Society and served as chair of the White Cross of Helix.

Survived include children, Millicent "Joan" Clark and June Ambler, both of Phoenix, Ariz., John Clark of Seattle, Dick Clark and Jerry Clark both of La Grande; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Fields of Omaha, Neb.

A son, Don Clark, and two sisters died earlier.

‘Tut’ Smedley

La Grande

1922-2005

Russell "Tut" Smedley, 83, of La Grande died Jan. 6. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church with Father Hank Albrecht officiating. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smedley was born Dec. 22, 1922, to Raleigh E. and Laura Melinda Smedley in Burley, Idaho. He graduated from Burley High School in 1942, and served in the Eighth Air Force during World War II as a flight engineer and turret gunner on a B-17, the "Happy Warrior."

On May 14, 1950, he married Mary Jane McCarthy in Burley.

He was a co-owner of the Kaiser-Frasier dealership and farmed in Buhl and Burley. In 1963 he began working for the Southern Idaho Production Credit Association, first as a field representative and later as manager of the Twin Falls office. He retired in 1985, and moved to La Grande in 2001.

He was a life member of the Burley Elks Lodge and the Veteran Motor Car Club of Magic Valley.

Survivors include his wife of La Grande; children and their spouses, Tim Smedley of Weiser, Patti and Dave Lachiondo of Boise, and Ginger and Scott Noble of La Grande; five grandchildren; and a brother, Jack Smedley of Salt Lake City.

A daughter, Terese "Teddy" Smedley, a brother, Raleigh "Bud" Smedley, and a sister, Lorraine Sperry, died earlier.
