Jack Sarrett, 72, of La Grande and formerly of Wallowa and Joseph, died Jan. 27 at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Boise.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Lower Valley Cemetery (Bramlet) in Wallowa with Pastor Steve Kirkeby of Valley Fellowship officiating. A reception will follow at the senior center in Wallowa.

Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sarrett was born March 2, 1932 in Wallowa to Charles B and Ida J. Laverty Sarrett. He was raised and educated in Wallowa. He moved to Joseph in 1964, and to La Grande in 1994.

He enjoyed hunting, camping, riding four-wheelers and, most of all, spending time with his family, He had the ability o make lots of friends in a short time.

He was active in the volunteer fire department and helping the Boys Scouts with trainings, reviews, badges, awards. He was always involved in family activities and his children’s sports.

He was survived by his wife, Marlene, of La Grande; three sons and daughters-in-law, Chuck and Carma of La Grande, Douglas and Linda of Phoenix, Ariz., and Robert and Sandy of La Grande; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents, one sister and four brothers died earlier.

Thurman "Leon" Gray, 55, of Enterprise died Jan. 29 at his home. A private memorial service will be held in the spring. Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gray was born Jan. 26, 1950, to George and Clara Gray in Greenville, Calif. He graduated from Lassen High School in Susanville, Calif., in 1969, and married Dody Hesseltine on Jan. 29, 1977. He worked in sawmills in California, Idaho and Oregon. The family moved to Wallowa County in 1981.

Survivors include his wife of Enterprise; children and their spouses, Stevena nd Chris of Cove, Dawna Gray of Susanville and Stacie Dane Sandoval of La Grande; five grandchildren; siblings and their spouses, Glenn and Debbie Gray of Hoquiam, Wash., and Linda and Dwayne Hiles of Elko, Nev.; his father-in-law, Bill Hesseltine of Marsing, Idaho, and other relatives.

Evelyn Adele Purcell, 77, of Joseph died Jan. 28 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Purcell was born Jan. 21, 1928, to Mark Allan and Mollie Irene Pettis Grist in Healdsburg, Calif. On April 21, 1944, she married Earl Roy Purcell in Santa Rosa, Calif. The family lived in Campbell, Calif. from 1954 to 1983 when they moved to Joseph. She was a homemaker and will be remembered as the Cookie Lady. She was known for her kindness and generous spirit.

Survivors include her husband of Joseph; a daughter, Kathleen Sue Carroll of Joseph; two grandchildren; siblings, Colleen Joy Davis, Mark Allan Grist and Gary Grist of northern California, and other relatives. A son, Michael Roy Purcell, died earlier.

Memorials may be made to a leukemia and cancer fund, for Crohn’s Disease or the Lions Clubs of Enterprise and Joseph in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise.

Muriel K. "Mack" McGinness Sr., 73, of Hermiston and formerly of Elgin and Wallowa died Jan. 28 at Kadlec Medical Center in Tri-Cities. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday Feb. 4 at Burns Mortuary, 685 W. Hermiston Ave., in Hermiston. A graveside service with military honors will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday Feb. 5 at Indian Valley Cemetery in Indian Valley, Idaho.

Mr. McGinness was born Dec. 29, 1931, to Weldon and Mary Robinson McGinness in Fairview, Va. He attended school in Indian Valley and Cambridge, Idaho, and served in the Army in France and Korea. In 1954, he married Linda Hall in Council, Idaho, in 1965 he married Beverly Huffman, and in 1996 Doris Hooker. He worked at the Boise Cascade sawmill in Elgin as a millwright and machinist, and retired to Wallowa before moving to Hermiston. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding mules and his restored model A which he entered in parades. He was a member of the VFW, the American Mule Association, the Antique Car Club of America and the Rusty Wheels Vintage Car Club in La Grande.

Survivors include his wife of Hermiston; children and their spouses, Keith and Patricia McGinness of North Powder, and Melvin and Linda McGinness of Elgin; four step-children, Scott Huffman of Elgin, Tom Hooker of Umatilla, Joni Carter of Hermiston and Karla Denny of Black Shear, Ga.; six grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Virginia Robinson of Council, Idaho, Laura Cline of Riggins, Idaho, Irislee Banks of Weiser, Idaho, and Tom McGinness of Irrigon; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Virgil and Dorothy McClain of Hermiston. A son, Kevin, three brothers, Jim, Frank and Ishmael, and three sisters, Mattie, Leona and LaVada, all died earlier.

Faye Ella Frayer, 84, of La Grande died Jan. 30. Viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday Feb. 3 at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Friday Feb. 4 at the First Christian Church, 901 Penn Ave. Burial will follow at the Summerville Cemetery.

Mrs. Frayer was born July 20, 1920, to Irvin and Martha Roberts Cunningham in Locust Grove, Okla. On Oct. 16, 1941, she married Charles R. Frayer. She came to La Grande in 1960 and worked at Grande Ronde Hospital for over 15 years. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and Bible study.

Survivors include children, Charles Frayer Jr. of Troutdale, Marian McKinney of Oklahoma City, Okla., Cindy Teague of Auburn, Ga., and Lindy Knape of Island City; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three siblings, Joe Cunningham of Oklahoma City, MaryJane Speck of Oklahoma City and Jerry Campbell of Ardmore, Okla. Her husband, three brothers, Clarence, Woody and Irvin Cunningham, and a sister, Flossie Wisley, all died earlier.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Janet Williams Adult Foster Home in care of Loveland Chapel.

Adam W. Ivins, 41, of Elgin died Jan. 29 in Baker City of natural causes. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 2 at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. A celebration of life will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday Feb. 3 at the Elgin Stampede Hall. Burial will follow at the Elgin Cemetery.

Mr. Ivins was born May 27, 1963, to George A. and Christeen Campo Ivins in Redding, Calif. He was a friend to everyone and enjoyed golfing, snowmobiling, basketball, softball, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. His family remembers him as a "wonderful, caring, loving, strong, kind and compassionate man."

Survivors include his wife, Twila Crouser Ivins; his mother, Christeen Deal; children, Keifer Ivins and Brandi Ivins, all of Elgin, Jeanette Michaelson and Adam Ivins Jr., both of Goldfield, Nev.; and a sister, Schelly Houtz of Braselton, Ga. His father and a brother, George Allen Ivins Jr., both died earlier.

Contributions may be made to an education fund for his children in care of Loveland Chapel.

Bertrand L. McNeil, 87, of La Grande, died Jan. 30 at Grande Ronde Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at the La Grande Church of the Nazarene at 3 p.m. Friday with Pastor Brent Clapp officiating. Private burial will be at the Grandview Cemetery.

Mr. McNeil was born on Jan. 1, 1918, the son of William A. and Charlotte Crites McNeil in Walla Walla, where he graduated from high school.

He came to La Grande in 1935, and on Aug. 1, 1937 he married Catherine Winburn in La Grande. He worked for Baker-La Grande Grocery Warehouse for 27 years before going to work in the shipping department at the Boise Cascade Lumber Mill in 1970. He retired in 1980.

Mr. McNeil was a member of the La Grande Church of the Nazarene. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing and camping. He was a people person and enjoyed visiting with anyone he met and he never knew a stranger. He loved spending time with family.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine McNeil; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Sherry McNeil; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, , all of La Grande; and other relatives. One brother died earlier.

Kristine Elizabeth Gazeley, 38, of Corvallis and formerly of La Grande and Joseph, died Jan. 29 at her home after a long illness. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday Feb. 5 at the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan, 33 N.W. 35th St., in Corvallis. McHenry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gazeley was born May 4, 1966, to Fred and Nancy Ebel in Boise. The family moved to Joseph in 1969, and to La Grande three years later. She graduated from La Grande High School in 1984 where she was on the tennis and cross-country teams, and played saxaphone in the school band. She was active in 4-H, served as a junior leader and 4-H ambassador, and showed dogs at the county and state fairs.

She graduated from Oregon State University in 1988 and in 1989 married Bill Gazeley in Corvallis. The couple moved to Fort Collins, Colo., and returned in 1994 first to Hillsboro and then to Corvallis. She served on numerous boards and committees, including the Good Samaritan School board, Alpha Xi Delta corporation board and her neighborhood association board in Fort Collins. She assisted her brothers-in-law with the establishment and operation of Cascade Lakes Brewing Company of Redmond where she was the company director. She was a member of the Episcopal Church and served as Sunday school teacher, on the Christian education committee and the vocations committee, and was part of the Hoover Moms in Touch prayer group. She enjoyed her house, garden and pets.

Survivors include her husband and children, Piper and Trevor, all of Corvallis; her parents; a sister, Kathy Perlot and grandparents, Archie and Gladys Brandt.
