Rodney Maurice Goble, 65, of La Grande died May 25 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life and graveside service will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Island City Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Goble was born Jan. 23, 1940, to Verda and Kathlien Eliason Goble in Nephi, Utah. He graduated from Santiam High School in Mill City in 1957, and served in the Air Force from 1958 to 1962.

He worked as a service technician with GTE and spent most of his career in La Grande. He retired in 1992.

Survivors include a brother, Philip Goble, of Sun City, Calif.; a sister and brother-in-law, Camille and Bruce Gordon of Salem; and LaNay Swan of Oregon. A sister, Beverly Mattson, of Crabtree died earlier.

Evelyn "Lyn" Anderson, 85, of Hillsboro and formerly of La Grande died May 24 at Tuality Community Hospital.

Westside Cremation and Burial Service was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Anderson was born Feb. 6, 1920, to Clifford and Eva Phelps Bender in Pendleton. She graduated from Pendleton High School in 1938.During World War II she moved to Los Angeles, Calif., to work as a parts warehouseman in an aircraft assembly plant. She also worked as a nanny, and in 1944 moved back to Pendleton.

On Sept. 2, 1945, she married Malcolm "Mac" Anderson on in Pendleton.They lived in Fargo, N.D., Corvallis, Chiloquin, Coquille, and Rickreall before moving to La Grande in 1960. In 1999 they moved to Hillsboro and celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.

She ran a day-care service in her home in Chiloquin and Rickreall, and in La Grande she was the lunch lady at her children’s elementary school and was the activities director for the Evergreen retirement home. She sold Avon products and enjoyed playing cards and board games, and watching her grandchildren play sports. She was a member of the Westside United Methodist Church in Beaverton and a past member of the La Grande United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband of Hillsboro; children and their spouses, Kathy Anderson of Hillsboro, Stephen and Laurie Anderson of Eugene, Tina and Bello Utoblo of Sheffield, England, and Emi and Jim Kelly of La Grande; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings and their spouses, Max and Bev Bender of Milton, Wash., and Byron and Bertie Bender of McMinnville; and other relatives.Six siblings died earlier.

Larry Gene Chandler, 70, of Klamath Falls and formerly of La Grande, died May 23 following an extended illness. At Mr. Chandler’s request no services will be held. Davenport’s Chapel of the Good Shepherd was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Chandler was born Feb. 12, 1935, to Atlee and Mary Oswald Chandler in La Grande. He attended Fruitdale School, La Grande High School and Oregon Technical Institute. He served in the Army and worked in the lumber industry. He married Dorothy Robbins.

Survivors include his wife of Klamath Falls; children, Mark Chandler of Oregon City, Greg Chandler of Klamath Falls, Robert Robbins, Rick Robbins, Ron Robbins and Lana Robbins; siblings, Lester Chandler of Ellensburg, Wash., Delbert Chandler of Surrey, B.C., Canada and Nancy DeBoie of Albany; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A brother, Keith Chandler, died earlier.

Erma V. Hixson, 95, of Perry died Friday at a care center. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday June 2 at Mt. Hope Cemetery with Pastor Monte Loyd of the Harvest Church in Baker City officiating.

Mrs. Hixson was born Oct. 5, 1909, to Abraham Fredrick and Artha Jane Kidd True in Paradise, Kan. The family lived in several places, including Colorado and South Dakota, and moved to Oregon in the 1930s. They lived in La Grande, North Powder and Baker City. On March 5, 1949, she married Ernest A. Hixson in Baker County. She spent most of her life on a farm, and loved horses. She enjoyed riding in the car, and in later years took her exercise walking in downtown Baker City. She was a member of the Assembly Of God Church.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Willard and Marie True of La Grande, and other relatives. Her husband, three brothers Enard, Ira and Glen True, and a sister, Effie Severns, all died earlier.

John Thomas Dean, 22, of Kennewick, Wash., and formerly of La Grande died May 27 in a highway accident on Cabbage Hill. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday June 4 at Powder Valley high School in North Powder. Burial will follow at the Haines Cemetery.

Mr. Dean was born Feb. 25, 1983, to Jerry and Eydie Dean in Richland, Wash. He attended grade-school in Imbler and in Ketchikan, Alaska. the family moved to North Powder where he graduated from high school. At Powder Valley School he was a member of FFA and played football. He began an apprenticeship as a pipefitter last fall in Pasco, Wash. He was good at mechanics and had a quiet, quick wit. He brought out the best in others. He enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting, camping, water sports, snowmobiling and motorcycles. He was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters’ Local 598 in Pasco.

Survivors include his fiancee, Kaela Curtis of Baker city; his parents of Pasco; a brother, Levi Dean of Kennewick; grandparents, Gene and Nicki Hiner of North Powder, and Jesse and Ruth Hall of Grandview, Wash., Great-grandparents, George and Ruth Deal of North Powder; aunts and uncles, Joe and Jeff Dean, Lori El-Hajj and Karen Dean, Diehl and Jessica Hiner, Doug and Deanna Forman, Kenny and Joan Brickey; and other relatives.

Olive Rosemary Schultz, 81, of La Grande, died May 30 at her home. A memorial service will begin at 2:30 p.m. Thursday June 2 at Trinity Baptist Church with Pastor Roger Cochran officiating. Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mrs. Schultz was born Sept. 18, 1923, to William H. and Lena Blake Crews in Madras. In 1940 she married James Bird. They lived in Prineville until 1956 when they moved to Waitsburg, Wash. In 1971 they moved to La Grande and he died in 1976. She worked as a drugstore clerk, and in 1986 she married Jack Schultz. He died March 24, 2004.

She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, where she served as the church pianist. She enjoyed crocheting, and her passion was flower gardening.

Survivors include her children, Margaret Alvarado of Simi Valley, Calif., Walter Bird of Dixie, Wash., and Edward Bird of El Paso, Texas; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; siblings, William H. Crews of Hood River, Loretta Schmitt of Beaverton, and Ann Gerald of Tucson, Ariz.; and other relatives. Two brothers, Francis and Joseph, and three sisters, Iva, Mona and Leah died earlier.

Richard Thomas Lansdon, 19, of Baker City died May 28 after an automobile accident. Burial was in Payette, Idaho, at the Riverside Cemetery.

Mr. Lansdon was born on Dec. 27, 1985, to Ronald and Grace Lansdon in Sacramento, Calif. He attended school in Baker City and Payette, and attended the Baker Nazarene Church and the Salvation Army Church and Youth Center. He enjoyed sports, especially baseball, and archery hunting. In 1997 and 1998 he won first place at an archery contest in Redding, Calif.

Recently he began working for Nash Trailers in La Grande and purchased his first car. He made friends easily, and loved his family, never missing an opportunity to tell or show them.

Survivors include his girlfriend, Sasha Thompson; his parents of Payette; siblings and their spouses, Jill and Brian Sprinkle, Anna and Jason Curtis, Scott Lansdon, James Lansdon and John Lansdon; aunts and uncles, Ben and Dorothy Likens, Harley and Hopie Letts, Hermes Brown and Chuck Seeley, and other relatives.

Herbert Stanley "Bud" Briggs, 90, of Enterprise died May 31 at his home. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at the Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St. in Enterprise.

Mr. Briggs was born Jan. 16, 1915, to Roy and Maude Briggs in New Meadows, Idaho. He came to Wallowa County in 1939 and worked at the mill in Joseph and as a janitor at Joseph high School. In 1940 he married Lucile Peal. In 1950 he began working for Pacific Power, and ran the power plant at Wallowa Lake for several years before transferring to the Lewis River Project at Cougar, Wash. He ran the power plant there until he retired in 1977. He lived with his daughter for the last four years.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, telling stories, feeding the birds and squirrels, and being with his dog and his grandchildren. He was known for his sense of humor.

Survivors include a daughter, Sue Briggs of Enterprise; three grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and other relatives. Two sisters, Frances Mead and Rose Sandlin Simmons, died earlier.

Walter Alvin Streich, 82, of Elgin died May 6 at his home. A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. June 11 at the Elgin Community Center. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Streich was born Sept. 30, 1922, to Andrew and Anna Nydegger Streich in Portland. He was raised on a dairy farm near Longview and Kelso, Wash.

Mr. Streich served in the Navy during World War II, and married Nova Little on April 26, 1947, in Kelso.

He worked as a logger in various areas of the Northwest before purchasing a laundry business in Portland which the couple ran from 1958 to 1962. He later purchased Mount Hood Motors and ran it until 1981 when he moved to Elgin.

He enjoyed Swiss music, schwingfests, socializing, hard work, helping others and being with his family. He will be remembered for his willingness to share his opinions, and for his love of a good time, family members said.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Karen and Dick Wood of Elgin, Arlin Streich of La Grande and Andy and Terry Streich of White Salmon, Wash.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and other relatives. His wife and two brothers, Warner and Alfred Streich, all died earlier.
