Gerald Raymond McIntyre, 66, of La Grande died Sept. 23 at St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla. Viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 27 at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. A celebration of life will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28 at Daniels Chapel with the Rev. Bill Miller of Valley Fellowship officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery.

Mr. McIntyre was born July 17, 1939, to Willard and Mildred Schlenbarger McIntyre in Cambridge, Idaho. He graduated from Prineville High School. where he played football and basketball, competed with the track team, and was on the Shrine All-Star Team. He held several school records and was senior class president.

On Dec. 31, 1960, he married Elizabeth Ann Martin in Ashland. He served in the Army from 1962 until 1967. They lived in Prineville until 1970 when they moved to La Grande.

He worked for Boise Cascade until his retirement in January 2000. He was a partner with Gene Stephens in G&G Construction. He was a member of the American Legion and was commander in Prineville for one year.

He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fly-fishing, camping, hunting, traveling and being with his family. He was known as a jokester.

Survivors include his wife of La Grande; children, Kathy Caldwell and Matthew McIntyre, both of La Grande, and JayDee Pohs of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren; his father-in-law, Leo Martin of Eugene; two sisters-in-law, Leona Graham of North Bend and Sarah Ezell of Eugene; and other relatives. A sister, Leona Harrison, died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Foundation or the American Lung Association in care of Daniels Chapel.

Ellen Arlene Keller, 66, of La Grande died Sept. 24 at her home. Viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 28 at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.. Thursday Sept. 29 at Grandview Cemetery with Pastor Steve Kirkeby of Valley Fellowship officiating.

Mrs. Keller was born March 13, 1939, to Bert and Ethel Donavon Herron in La Grande. She graduated from La Grande High School and on July 3, 1958, she married Gary Keller in La Grande. She was a homemaker and a volunteer with the Girl Scouts. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge, and enjoyed playing bingo, gardening, watching stock car races and spending time at the family cabin.

Survivors include her husband of La Grande; children and their spouses, Christy Morrison, John and Becky Keller, and Eric Keller, all of La Grande; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Idah McElvain of La Grande and Doris McClareon of Pilot Rock, and other relatives. Four brothers, George, Frank, Jim and Ray Herron all died earlier.

Memorials may be made to a cancer research fund in care of Daniels Chapel.

James Zahm, 82, of Wallowa died Sept. 19 in La Grande. A celebration of life will begin at 3 p.m. Friday Sept. 30 at the family home, 67353 Promise Road in Wallowa. Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Zahm was born June 23, 1923, to Tom and Golda Harkbarth Zahm in Enterprise. He graduated from Enterprise High School and married Mary Louise Weinhard in 1950. He served in the Marine Corps during the World War II, the Korean War and in Vietnam. He retired in 1979 as a chief warrant officer.

He was a skilled craftsman, gunsmith and outdoorsman, and enjoyed golf, trap shooting, bird hunting and raising German shorthair pointers.

Survivors include a daughter, Amy Zahm of Wallowa; and a sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Jim Strohm of Enterprise. His wife died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Elks scholarship fund or the Wallowa Public Library in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise.

Emery Stuart Oliver, 93, known as the "Meanest Man in Summerville," died Sept. 27 at his home. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley. A memorial gathering will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the Summerville Cemetery chapel.

Mr. Oliver was born March 27, 1912, to Burt M. and Bessie Sanderson Oliver near Dry Creek School in Summerville. He served in the Navy during World War II in eight major battles including Pearl Harbor.

On March 23, 1947, he married Thelma G. Kennedy in Summerville. He was a farmer and served as secretary of the Summerville Cemetery for 50 years.

He was a member of the American Legion, the KCCH Scottish Rite and the Al Kader Shrine, the Odd Fellows, the Eagles and the VFW, and was a past master of the Elgin Masonic Lodge, past patron of the Blue Mountain Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, and served as father adviser for the Rainbow Girls. He served on the school board and the school board budget committee for many years. He was active in all the organizations he belonged to.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma of Summerville; children and their spouses, Ann and Lee Flower of La Grande, Carol Oliver and Charles Meyer of Elgin, and Marilyn and Jim Morasch of Hermiston; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Madeline Shore of Hillsboro; and other relatives. Three brothers, Harold, Lawrence and Howard Oliver, a sister, Lema, and two granddaughters all died earlier.

Nancy Lynn Tye, 44, of La Grande and formerly of Enterprise died Sept. 24 after a long illness. A memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. Oct. 8 at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St.

Mrs. Tye was born Sept. 10, 1961, to Mary and Frank Gilchrist in Loma Linda, Calif. She attended school in Yucaipa, Calif., and in Prineville. She moved to Enterprise where she worked as the manager of a health-food store and of the Enterprise Elks Lodge. In 1985 she married John Tye of Enterprise. They were later divorced. She moved to Astoria in 2003 and returned to La Grande this summer. She enjoyed reading, collecting interesting rocks, and being with her family.

Survivors include her children, Tamara Nicole Tye of Lewiston, Idaho, John Jerome Tye and Jillian Rae Tye, both of Enterprise; her mother and stepfather, Mary and Bill Rautenstrauch of La Grande; siblings, Matthew and Mark Gilchrist of Michigan, and Deborah Hale of Banning, Calif.; and other relatives. Her father died earlier.

Willard Dale Vernholm, 73, of Baker City and formerly of Enterprise and Elgin died Sept. 25 at a care center. At his request there will be no services. Eastern Oregon Pioneer Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Vernholm was born Feb. 11, 1932, to Carl Willard and Lois Louetta Middleton Vernholm in York, Neb. He graduated from Corvallis High School, and in 1947, the family moved to New Plymouth, Idaho. At the age of 16, he lied about his age and went to work for the Payette National Forest manning a lookout tower.

On July 2, 1951, he married Josephine Detmer. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Payette County road department, and later for the Baker County road department, the Steward & Morrissey Ranch and Simonson’s Construction.

He worked for the Wallowa-Whitman and the Umatilla national forests, and lived in Pendleton, Enterprise and Elgin. He retired in 1991 and moved to Richland, then after five years, back to Baker City.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, leather crafts, gardening and yard work.

Survivors include his wife of Baker City; children and their spouses, Steven and Kathy Vernholm of Emmett, Idaho, Gary and Peggy Vernholm of Baker City, and Michael Vernholm of Pendleton; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Linda Robbins of Baker City; and a brother, Ron Vernholm of Dillon, Mont. An infant daughter, Jody, died earlier.

Edith Loveland Scott, 96, of Prineville and formerly of Wallowa died Sept. 14 at Prineville Memorial Hospital. A celebration of life was held today at the Missionary Baptist Church in Prineville. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Scott was born July 15, 1909, to Roy and Grace Wisdom Martin in Wallowa. She graduated from Wallowa High School, and attended nursing school in Pendleton. She married Ross Loveland, and after his death she married Tom Scott. He died in 1993.

After she retired from nursing, she worked as a school-bus driver. She was a member of the Lostine Rebekah Lodge, and enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling.

Survivors include children, Patricia Caraway, of Prineville, and Ross Loveland Jr., of Powell Butte; stepchildren, John Scott of Baker City, and Reda Hughbanks, of Prineville; seven grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren. A son, Ralph Loveland, a stepson, Ben Scott, a brother, Gerald Martin, and a great-grandson, Travis Caraway, all died earlier.

Lota Marion Kelley, 101, of La Grande died Sept. 22 at Grande Ronde Hospital. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Oct. 8 at the United Methodist Church, 1612 Fourth St.

Mrs. Kelly was born April 19, 1904, to William Lester and Theda Estelle Howell Pierson in Albion, Idaho. She graduated from La Grande High School and from Western Oregon College, and attended the University of California. She taught school for many years in Hermiston, Adams, Palmer Junction and at Greenwood Elementary School.

On March 27, 1927, she married Cecil D. Kelley, who until his retirement was the owner of La Grande Sand and Gravel in Island City.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Retired Educators Association and the Wesleyan Circle. She enjoyed playing bridge, reading her Bible, daily walks, knitting, crochet, tatting and being with her family and friends.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Terry and LaVerta Kelley of Sammamish, Wash.; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.

Beatrice Belle Shaffer, 81, of Elgin died Sept. 27 at Grande Ronde Hospital. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m Friday at the Summerville Cemetery chapel. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Shaffer was born Oct. 22, 1923, to Luther Martin and Ellen Belle Bennett Hays in Hagersgrove, Mo. The family moved to Idaho and then to the Grande Ronde Valley. On Aug. 22, 1942, she married Lawrence W. Shaffer in Weiser, Idaho. They settled in Elgin.

She was a member of the local grange and the VFW, and enjoyed gardening, hunting and riding horseback into the high country.

Survivors include children, Larry Lee Shaffer, Jack Lawrence Shaffer and Terry Lyle Shaffer, all of Elgin, and Wynonia Bea Shaffer of La Grande; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Clarence, Benjamin and Charles Hays, all of Elgin; a sister, Bertha Stephens of Kootskie, Idaho; and other relatives. Her husband and a brother, Oliver Hays, died earlier.

John D. Manwell Jr., 48, of La Grande died Sept. 24 on Blalock Mountain near Milton-Freewater. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Nazarene Church, 109 18th St., with Pastor Dan Mielke officiating.

Mr. Manwell was born March 16, 1957, to John and Mavis Yetter Manwell in Red Bluff, Calif. He graduated from Red Bluff High School in 1975, and later from Humboldt State University with a degree in forest production. He became the resident forester for Diamond Lands in Lyman Springs, Calif. On October 7, 1989, he married Jann L. Phillips in Somerset, Calif. They moved to Medford, where he worked as a forest engineer for Boise Cascade, and later to La Grande where he was chief unit forester for Boise. In February this year he became the Northeast Oregon regional manager for Forest Capital Partners.

He was a devoted husband and father, and was always involved with his children’s activities. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, camping, hiking and being with his family. He was a Registered Professional Forester and a member of the Society of American Foresters.

Survivors include his wife and sons Benjamin, Evan and Jacob Manwell all of La Grande; siblings, Malcolm Manwell of Santa Rosa, Calif., Cathie Adams of Spokane, Barbara Manwell of Folsom, Calif., Elizabeth Jackson of Red Bluff, Calif., and Virginia Edwards of Littleton, Colo.; and other relatives. His parents died earlier.

Emma Williams, 99, of Union, died Sept. 28 at a local care center. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Union Cemetery.

Mrs. Williams was born Feb. 26, 1906, to Ed and Margaret Bainbridge Wulf on a farm outside of Union. She had wonderful stories to tell about growing up out, dances attended by families in the area, riding there in winter in a horse-drawn carriage, wrapped in blankets and with hot rocks placed in a blanket near the passengers’ feet. She rode horseback to the school in Telecaset. She graduated from Union High School in 1925, where she played on the championship basketball team.

On Oct. 20, 1936, she married Lonnie "Red" Williams. They were engaged for nine years, waiting until he could afford to support a wife. Before her marriage she worked for the Union weekly paper and for the Union Post Office. She enjoyed keeping her little house tidy. Her widowed sister, Lola Hetrick, lived with the couple. Red died in 1978.

Mrs. Williams was a member of the High Valley VFW Auxiliary, the business women’s club of Union and the Today Not Tomorrow club. She enjoyed cards and played in the Friendly Pinochle Club and the Lucky 13 Bridge Club. She relied on her friends in Union, Bobbie James and Nell Crosland, especially, through her last years. She always followed the Trailblazers and enjoyed listening to the games.

Survivors include a nephew, Glen Wulf; a niece, Arlene Reimers and other relatives. Three brothers, Irvin, Clifford and Roland Wulf, and a sister, Lola Hetrick, all died earlier.
