RUN RECORDS TUMBLE AT CATHERINE CREEK CLASSIC

The Catherine Creek Classic Race in Union drew 93 participants for its 2006 running on August 5.

Runners from Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Utah competed in races of 1 mile, 5 kilometers and a half-marathon. The half-marathon field was among the largest ever for the Catherine Creek Classic.

Julianna Looney broke her one-year-old course record in the half-marathon. The La Grande native took first place with a time of 1:28.07.

Marika Dobos of La Grande was second with a time of 1:39.46.

In the men’s half-marathon, Jason Griffiths of Bend shattered the two-year-old record set by his brother and former Eastern Oregon University star Eric, running a time of 1:06:57. Second place went to another former EOU runner, Eric Jensen of Athena, who finished in 1:19.42.

In the 5K run, Pamila Ward of Boise outdistanced Lacey Mesia, also of Boise, with a time of 20:35. Mesia finished in 22:01.

Former Mountaineer runner Ian Schroeder won the men’s 5K in a time of 15:32. Second place went to Blas Guerra of Ontario with a time of 16:59.

Hometown runners took top honors in the boys and girls

1-mile run. Michael O’Reilly of Union won the boys run in 6:47, while Katriel O’Reilly was tops in the girls race with a time of 7:29.

Jesse Black took second in the boys race. Maggie Sheehy was second in the girls division.

The youngest participant in the Catherine Creek Classic field was three-year-old Carter Blackburn of La Grande.
