James (Jim) H. Lockett, 78, of McMinnville and formerly of

La Grande, died Oct. 26 at the Willamette Valley Medical Center in McMinnville. There will be an 11 a.m. memorial service Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Enterprise with Pastor Kent Harrop officiating. A private family burial will follow at the Enterprise Cemetery.

Mr. Lockett was born in La Grande on June 16, 1928, to Arden Carmen and Gwendolyn Bell Lockett. He spent the first six years of his life listening to and watching the great steam locomotives roar through Kamela. He finished grade school in La Grande, attended high school in Athena and graduated from Eastern Oregon College in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He went on to complete a master’s degree at OSU.

While at EOC, he met Reita Murrey, and on Aug. 5, 1950, they married in Enterprise. They made their home in McMinnville, where he was an elementary school principal for 31 years and taught for five years. He was a trustee on the OEA Board during his teaching career and retired in 1986.

He published two books, one in 1995 and one in 2005, both collections of his columns from the News Register on the history of Yamhill County. He was active in Kiwanis and volunteered at the Evergreen Aviation Museum and for the Red Cross.

His hobbies included researching his family genealogy, studying Oregon geology, flying, making stained glass, gardening, painting, doing crossword puzzles and using computers. He loved to travel, both in his RV and exploring back roads. He was very much a family man and loved his girls and and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Reita, of McMinnville; daughters, Becki Heath of Bozeman, Mont., Janie Burich of Troutdale and Katie Foster of Parkdale; brothers, Kenneth Locket of Astoria, Dudley Lockett of Concord, Calif., and Rex Lockett of Tustin, Calif.; sisters, Gail Pierce of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Judy Kliesh of White Salmon, Wash.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Hall.

Mardella Lee Carlson, 56, of Coeur d’Alene and formerly of Summerville and La Grande, died Oct. 28 at Kootenai Medical Center. A memorial service is planned for Friday at 1 p.m. at the La Grande Nazarene Church. Daniels Chapel of

the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Carlson was born Feb. 8, 1950, in La Grande to Dale L. and Valera L. Robinette Carlson of Summerville. She grew up on the family farm and was active in local 4-H clubs and in Girl Scouts. As a child she loved picking huckleberries in the nearby mountains with her family.

She attended elementary school in Imbler, and her remaining education was at La Grande in a special education curriculum. She graduated with a modified diploma from

La Grande High School in 1969 and proudly marched with the class at graduation.

After high school she lived with her grandmother, Lola Robinette, and worked as a dishwasher at the Royal Cafe in downtown La Grande. In 1971 she moved to a private group home in Boise, and during the rest of her life, she lived in group homes in Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

In 1996 it was discovered that she had an inoperable brain tumor that had been the cause of her special needs at birth and throughout her life.

While she was able, she always came home for holidays, especially Christmas. She was always talking about her family, and they made trips to visit her as often as they could.

Survivors include her mother, Valera L. Carlson of Island City; siblings and their spouses, Lawrence "Larry" D. Carlson of Kuna, Idaho, Karen and Robert Douglas of Ontario and Durinda and Matt Burrows of La Grande; six nieces and one nephew; four great-nieces and one great-nephew; and numerous cousins and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her father; grandparents, Lawrence V. Carlson and Zilla E. Carlson Choate and Otto T. Robinette and Lola J. Robinette; and stepgrandparents, Mary O. Hayes Robinette and Dillard R. Choate.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Pinewood Care Center, 2514 North Seventh, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, 83814.

Eva R. Colpitts, 97, of Enterprise died Oct. 29 at the Wallowa Valley Care Center in Enterprise. There will be a celebration of life at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Bollman Funeral Home in Enterprise with Dr. Craig Strobel officiating. Burial will be in a private vault at the Enterprise Cemetery.

Mrs. Colpitts was born in Cliffs, Wash., Dec. 6, 1908, to Stephen Douglas Cox and Ethel Mae Washburn. She was raised by Orris and Effie Gorsline of Joseph after the death of her mother in 1910. She attended Pleasant Center School and Joseph High School.

On Jan. 9, 1927, she married Edmund Perry Colpitts in

La Grande. They farmed on Upper Prairie Creek until 1936, when the moved to California and worked on ranches. In 1942 they moved back to Eagle Point, where they had a small farm. In 1948 they purchased a tavern in Central Point and later bought interest in the 21 Club in Medford. After her husband’s death in 1959, she operated the club until 1973. She lived in Medford until 2002 when she returned to Enterprise.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers and

sisters.

Clara Berneice Kreizenbeck Holloran, 88, of Enterprise died Oct. 22 at the Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Katherine Catholic Church in Enterprise with Father Peter Fernando officiating. Burial will be at the Enterprise Cemetery.

Mrs. Holloran, known as Berneice, was born April 17, 1918, in Emmett, Idaho, to Henry C. and Clara Ann Riggs Kreizenbeck. On Mar. 19, 1955, she married Francis Jeremiah Holloran in Reno, Nev.

Survivors include her sister-in-law Vi Kreizenbeck Harmon, numerous nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a brother, Jack Kreizenbeck.

Samantha L. Kuperus Carpenter, 37, formerly of Union County, died Oct. 28 in Fairmont, W.Va. There will be a 3 p.m. memorial service Monday at the Union County Senior Center. Everyone is requested to bring a rose.

Ms. Carpenter, who preferred to be called Sammy, was born Dec. 2, 1968, in Auburn, Calif., and spent her childhood in several towns in Union County.

She had a way of cheering up people. She always encouraged people around her to make sound choices, and many were touched by her spirit.

Survivors include her father, Sam Kuperus; stepmother, Delilah Bishop; sons, Anthony and Zachary; and siblings, Robert Kuperus, Cherie O’Brian and William Kuperus.

Betty Doris Rogers, 79, of Yuma, Ariz., and formerly of

La Grande, died Oct. 20 at the Yuma Regional Medical Center after suffering a stroke. No services are planned at this time.

Mrs. Rogers was born May 9, 1927, to Frank E. and Luva Roberts Messersmith in Alliance, Neb., one of seven children. She attended high school in Curtis, Neb., graduating in 1945. She studied for a year at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, then taught at a country school in Box Butte County, Neb.

She married Lyle Dunham Rogers on Sept. 27, 1947, in Alliance. The couple moved to

La Grande, where she was active in Cub Scouts and County Extension. In late 1959 the Rogers moved to Pendleton, where they held various jobs.

They were involved with the Pendleton Round-Up for 10 years as members of the Main Street Cowboys and Sidesaddlers, promoters of the city. They were also active members of the Allons dance club and the Blue Mountain Good Sams RV club.

In 1975 she became a cosmetologist, and she owned her own salon for many years. They retired to Yuma, continuing to summer in Pendleton through 2005.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years; children and their spouses, Dennis Lee and Kathy Weddell Rogers of Mount Angel and Connie Lu and Gary Snowberger of Cupertino, Calif.; three grandchildren; a great-grandson; three brothers and a sister in Nebraska; and numerous nieces and nephews.

James (Jim) "Burrhead" Willard McMahon, 86, died Oct. 29 at his home in Union. A

3 p.m. funeral service Saturday will be at the LDS Ward in Union. No viewing will be conducted. Final burial will be at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Arrangements are under the direction of Loveland Funeral Chapel.

Mr. McMahon was born Jan. 26, 1920, to Cleveland Randolph and Anna Lee Wilkinson McMahon in Staunton, Ind., where he received his education. He worked on the railroad as a young man until he volunteered to serve in the Navy during World War II, where he saw action on Normandy Beach.

Before the war he married Maudie Welch; they later divorced.

Following the war, he did highway construction work and then drove truck for 22 years. About 1965 he moved to Union and worked for the Boise Cascade particle board plant until retiring in 1984.

In 1977 he married Martha Lucinda Callahan in Union. They would have celebrated their 28th anniversary this coming Nov. 5.

For many seasons the McMahons enjoyed going to the mountains and cutting wood for their own use and that of numerous medical professionals. He memorized poetry, which he would recite effortlessly. He also loved jokes and making people laugh. Most of all, he enjoyed being in the loving company of family and friends.

Survivors include his wife; children, James and Margaret Batchlor of Brazil, Ind., Arthur "Buddy" of Evansville, Ind., Carolyn Alexander of Crawfordsville, Ind.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters, and his daughters, Martha Ellen Batchlor and Patricia Bottorff.

Ralph V. Carter, 88, of Florence and formerly of

La Grande, died Sept. 26. The family will have a private memorial service at a later date.

Mr. Carter was born Sept. 5, 1918, in Henning, Minn., to Clarence and Lillian Carter, the fourth of eight children. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps and spent four years in the Army with the Coastal Defense Battalion.

In 1959, after a particularly hard Minnesota winter, he and his wife, Florence Mabel Stewart, moved with their four children to Oregon. He worked as a Crook County assessor in Prineville and as a right of way appraiser for the Oregon State Highway Department in La Grande, Portland and Salem. He and his wife retired to Mapleton and enjoyed living on the Siuslaw River. He loved the out of doors, meeting new people and playing cribbage, dominos and bingo.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years; children and their spouses, R. Douglas Carter of Shasta City, Calif., Sharon and Allan McGlasson of North Bend, Deborah Lee and fianc Dan White of Eugene and Connie and Lance Barton of Coos Bay; 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Pauline V. Harrison, 93, of La Grande, died Nov. 1 at the Grande Ronde Hospital. A funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande. Private burial will be at the North Powder Cemetery.

Mrs. Harrison was born Dec. 8, 1912, in Litchfield, Neb., the daughter of Ray and Anna (Williamson) Russell. She married Homer E. Harrison on Oct. 15, 1946.

Pauline was a cosmetologist in Nebraska for several years before moving to Oregon. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, traveling and working crossword puzzles.

Survivors include two sisters, Lucille Buettner of Anthon, Iowa, and Maxine Lamprecht of Ponca, Neb.; several nieces and nephews and her very special friends, David, Kimberly, Cody, Jessica and Sara Williams, all of La Grande.
