Laurie Dolores Turner, 65, of Redmond and formerly of

La Grande, died July 26. A celebration of life will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at her home.

Laurie was born April 26, 1942, to Stanley and Jeanette Brown Mann in McMinnville. She married Darrell G. Turner on Jan. 23, 1961, in Boise.

She worked as a sales assistant to her husband at Western Wear and later for The Spotted Mule in Bend. They lived in La Grande for a while, where their son graduated from high school. She enjoyed being with her

family, dancing and her cat, Tygh.

Survivors include her husband, Darrell G. Turner; children, Monte Turner of Redmond and Shelley Bolyard of Twin Falls; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

Dan Thomas Carroll, 38, of La Grande died July 28 at his home. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. tonight and from, 7 to 9 a.m.Wednesday at Loveland Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Island City Cemetery.

Dan was born March 31, 1969, to David Carroll and Vera Benson in Martinez, Calif. He was raised and educated in Pleasant Hill, Calif., and in La Grande. He married Christy Harper on Aug. 26, 1989, in La Grande.

He was a member of the Third Batallion, 116th Armored Cavalry headquartered in the La Grande Oregon National Guard. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting, building models and video games.

He is survived by his wife, Christy; children, Andrew and Jennifer; parents, Vera and Gene Pender, all of La Grande and David and Nancy Carroll of Carson City, Nev.; siblings, Billy Carroll of Nampa, Idaho, Diana Collins of La Grande and David Pender of La Grande; and in-laws, Tom and Chris Harper of Kelso, Wash., and Billie Fisher of Stagecoach, Nev.

Phyllis Marie Marx, 56, of La Grande, died July 29 at her home. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, and viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the chapel.

Burial will be at the Union Cemetery following the funeral service.

Phyllis was born on July 1, 1951, the daughter of Beryl and Dorothy (Silvey) Brookshire in Prineville. The family lived in Mitchell before moving to Union, where she graduated from high school. She worked in the bakery at Albertsons for 14 years.

On April 4, 1992, she married Bert Marx in La Grande. She enjoyed crocheting, camping, fishing and boating.

Survivors include her husband, Bert of La Grande; children, Mark Kirkland of Nampa, Idaho, and Laurie and Tim Testiman of Enterprise; parents, Beryl and Dorothy Brookshire of Union; brothers, Rick Brookshire of Alaska and Jeff Brookshire of Enterprise; two grandsons; and other relatives. Her son, Clint Kirkland, preceded her in death.

Robin Louise Battrick, 56, formerly of La Grande, died July 31 at her home in Coffey, Mo., following a 10-month battle with cancer. A funeral service and burial will be in Coffey, with memorial services to follow in Corvallis and La Grande.

Robin was born July 17, 1951, in Bloomington, Ind. After a transient childhood with stops from Florida to Alaska, her family settled in La Grande in September 1965. She graduated from La Grande High School in 1969 as co-valedictorian. She attended Reed College in Portland and Oregon State University.

Robin served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ecuador in 1973. She married her high school sweetheart, Craig J. Battrick, in the Idaho Falls Temple of the LDS Church on Feb. 12, 1974.

They remained in La Grande for most of the next eight years, with brief moves to John Day and Pendleton, before moving to Corvallis in 1982.

Robin was employed with Hewlett-Packard Co., where she was a machine operator, technical writer and trainer, and intranet designer. She was communications manager for a software development division of Hewlett-Packard when she retired in 2005.

Craig and Robin moved to their retirement farm in Coffey in December 2005.

Robin is remembered by friends and family as a gifted and bright student, excellent homemaker and extremely capable employee. After being a straight-A student in high school and college, she was consistently ranked at the top of the employee rankings at Hewlett-Packard for most of her 21-year career.

Robin was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Cornelius and brother, Greg Cornelius. She is survived by her father, Thomas E. Cornelius of Huntington; husband, Craig Battrick of Coffey; children, Joseph Battrick of Albany, Christopher Battrick of Portland and Samantha Battrick of Kansas City, Kan.; brothers Robert Cornelius and Michael Cornelius of La Grande, Kurt Cornelius of Alberton, Mont.,

and Thomas M. Cornelius of Huntington; and five grandchildren.

Beatrice "Bea" L. Parmele, 82, of Cove, died July 29 at Grande Ronde Hospital. There will be no service as per Bea’s request.

Bea was born March 29, 1925, to Bernice and Dora Cooper in Portland. She married Donald Parmele Aug. 20, 1945, in Portland.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed her family, gardening and numerous pets including her current cat, Scamper. She also lived in Boring.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Dan and Kris Parmele of Boring, Jerry and Jana Parmele of Cove and Joanne and Randy Crutcher of Baker City; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister and one great-grandchild.

Kenneth L. Smith, 78, died July 10 at the Veterans Hospital in Seattle after a lengthy illness. A funeral service was held on July 16 in Kirkland, Wash.

He was born on Nov. 23, 1928, in La Grande. Ken barbered for many years in the Bothel area of Seattle. He was also a tree-topper in northeast Seattle for many years. Of the two occupations, he enjoyed tree-topping more. Ken was quick to make friends and never knew a stranger.

He is survived by his wife, the former Sherril Bateman of Union; five sons and their wives, Frank and Jodi, Rusty and Sarah, Don and Shirley, Steve and Melody and Bob and Mary; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Glenn Smith, who was killed while on duty in the military.

William "Bill" Arnold Trump, 83, of Wallowa died July 20 in Selah, Wash. A graveside service was held last Thursday at the Wallowa Cemetery.

Bill was the fifth child born to John Russell and Cordelia Vest Trump in Wallowa on Feb. 8, 1924. He was a descendent of early pioneer families of Wallowa County his grandparents were John Jordan and Rhonda Minerva Walls Trump and William Harvey and Ellen Mollissia Cole Vest.

Bill was a member of the U.S. Army during World War II and received a Purple Heart, two Bronze Campaign Stars and a Victory Medal.

On Aug. 31, 1947, Bill married Barbara Ann Hall of Wallowa County and lived for more than 40 years on Bear Creek where they raised four children. He worked as a millworker for J. Herbert Bates Mill in Wallowa. During retirement, Barbara and Bill traveled, eventually settling into spending winters in Salome, Ariz., and summers in Wallowa County.

He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 4307 and enjoyed the Wallowa Mountains and fiddle music.

Bill is survived by his children, Lester Glenn Wart of Orofino, Idaho, Michael Lynn Wart and Louise Ann Rice, both of Pendleton and Billie Sue Fife of Selah; siblings, Velma Hescock and Gerald Trump, both of Wallowa and Clarence Trump of Yoncalla; 16 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; son, Mike; brother, Elmer Trump and his wife, Lillie; sister, Elsie Stark and her husband, Elmer and one great-granddaughter.

Lloyd Alvin Waid, 93, died on July 30 at a care center in La Grande.

A graveside service was conducted for the family at Stanfield Cemetery this morning. A celebration of life will take place at the Ukiah Senior Center for all of Lloyd’s friends and family. Time and date will be announced later.

Lloyd was born Feb. 27, 1914, to Eda Frederickson and Claude J. Waid in Stanfield. The family moved to Sand Hollow on a homestead and raised wheat. Because Lloyd’s mother died in 1924 when Lloyd was 10 years old, he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Neil and Lulu White at Hideaway Springs. Lloyd graduated from Ukiah High School, married his high school sweetheart and started working for the US Forest Service on Desolation Creek Lookout.

He had no ambition to attend college until, one day, he noticed an ad in a Montgomery Ward catalog that offered "free college." It was a commission plan in which he got 25 percent of each order that he could get from prospective customers. He was the first person in his family to attend college and got a degree in forestry at Oregon State College in 1940 and began a 35-year career in the Forest Service.

Lloyd entered the naval air service, performing most of his duties in the South Pacific. Eventually commissioned as a lieutenant, though he "didn’t know port from starboard," he decided to leave the Navy in 1949 and go back to forestry.

He married his wife Norma, in 1950 and they both worked for the Forest Service for many years.

In 1972, he retired from the Forest Service, whereupon he led a petition effort to incorporate the town of Ukiah. Part of the requirement for this was to install an approved sewer system and a town water supply. With that accomplished, he became mayor of Ukiah for the next 15 years.

Lloyd and Norma moved to Hermiston, Pendleton and finally to La Grande where they lived at the Grande Ronde Retirement Center until Norma died in 2001.

Lloyd loved to golf. In fact, he golfed just one month ago. He was such an avid hunter that it was a challenge for Norma to think of new ways to prepare venison. He was also a fan of the Portland Trail Blazers.

Lloyd is survived by his daughter, Karla Lewis and husband Ernest; granddaughter Melissa and husband Bill Wendell; brothers Ken Waid of Umatilla and Fred Waid of Bangkok, Thailand; cousin Vivian White who was almost like a brother; and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.

Michael Duane Wright, 63, of La Grande and formerly of Union, died July 18 at his home. At his request there will be no public services.

Michael was born July 26, 1943, to Willis Pershing and Hazel Ruth (Arvidson) Wright in Walla Walla. After graduation from high school he served with the Navy from 1960 to 1964.

From 1987 until his death, he worked as a mechanic for Greyback, and from 1996 to 2000 and various other times, he worked for Bowman Trucking.

In the 1990s he purchased a ranch in Union and raised cattle and alfalfa in addition to his other jobs.

In December 2006 he sold his ranch and moved to La Grande. He enjoyed ranching, elk hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his sons, Willie Wright of Washington, Utah, Glenn Wright and Lloyd Wright, both of Cave Junction; stepdaughter, Ray Swift of Cave Junction; brother, Larry Wright of Carson City, Nev.; two grandchildren and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; older brother, Frank and younger sister, Ruth.

Charles Bates, 48, of Ontario, died July 30 at his home of natural causes. A celebration of life will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the LDS Church house at 710 S. Curtis Road in Boise. Cremation was held.

He was born Sept. 16, 1958, to Jay and Jeanne Bates in Rigby Idaho. He was the fourth child.

Chuck grew up in Boise where he was active in sports. After marrying he moved his family to Oregon where he spent many years coaching multiple sports. Chuck worked hard at being a positive influence and was proud of his role in the community, family members said, and as a coach at Ontario High he left an indelible mark on his players. He is fondly remembered as Coach Bates.

He is survived by two sons and their spouses, Michael and Nicole Bates of Boise and Robert and Brittany Bates of La Grande; mother, Jeanne Bates of Boise; brothers, Reed and Kris Bates of Boise, and Morgan and Lynne Bates of Seattle; sisters, Rhonda Marlow and Tawna and Howard Chase; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert "Blackie" Bowen, 81 of Island City died at his home Aug. 1. A celebration of life will be held at the American Legion in La Grande. Time and date will be announced at a later date.

Blackie was born on Feb. 1, 1926, to John and Alberta Mills Bowen in Riverton, Wyo. He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945. He married Betty Bretz of Nyssa, Idaho, on June 20, 1950, in Winnemucca, Nev. Blackie was a member of Operating Engineers Local 701 in Portland and Local 370 in Spokane. He was a 40-year member of the Eagles club and American Legion in La Grande.

He loved playing pool with his buddies in La Grande and enjoyed having hamburgers at the Legion on Tuesdays with his wife and friends. Blackie also loved to make pool cues in his shop.

Blackie is survived by his wife, Betty Bretz Bowen; his children, Mike and Marilyn Bowen of Elgin, Dan and Honour Bowen, Susan and Delmer Hanson, and Rick and Tina Bowen, all of La Grande and Jerry Bowen of Salem, 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, siblings and their spouses, Jack and Vivian Bowen of Pendleton, Bernice Cleaver of Hermiston and Bill and Marguerite Bowen of St. Maries, Idaho.

Kody Bonham Cannon, 3, died July 29 in La Grande. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Kody was born March 16, 2004, in La Grande. His family says that Kody was a happy boy who, no matter what, had a smile on his face. Kody enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping with his family. Kody enjoyed cutting and drawing, leaving many masterpieces behind, family members say.

Throughout his short life, his family says that he touched many other people. They say that Kody taught, in his own way, each person he met lessons in life. His family says that Kody’s love for life will live on in all those who knew him.

Richard William Gillette, 82, of Joseph, died Aug. 1 at his home surrounded by his family. Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Bollman Funeral Chapel in Enterprise.

He was born May 22, 1925, in Berkeley, Calif., to Albert and Elsie Gillette. Richard was a City of Portland Public Works inspector until his retirement in 1989. In 1992, he and his wife, Colleen, moved to Joseph.

Richard served in the U.S. Navy Seabees from August 1943 to March 1946.

Richard is survived by his wife of 51 years, Colleen; daughters, Patti Burns and husband, Terry of North Plains and Becky Rushton and husband, Scott of Joseph; sons, Rick Gillette and wife Alexis of Joseph and Ken Wick and wife Kelly of Joseph; siblings, Robert, David and Gloria, all of Portland; sister-in-law, Patricia Olson and husband, Howard Beaverton, 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brother, Albert Jr.; sisters, Jodie and Dorothy.

Vera I. Miller, 71, of Union, died July 30 at her home with her family by her side. A memorial service began today at 11 a.m. at the Union Baptist Church on Main Street in Union.

Vera was born on July 12, 1936, to German immigrants who came to the United States in 1907. She grew up in Nampa, Idaho, where she graduated in 1954 from Nampa High School and then Nampa Business College as a full-charge bookkeeper. She was well respected in the business community and was a former member of the Credit Women’s Association in La Grande. She was most recently employed by Terry Hughes at Farmer’s Insurance Co.

She is survived by her husband, Bob Miller of Union; children, Kathy and Bert Kirby of Union; Doug and Margie Prickett of Nampa, Idaho, and Susan and Scott Drinnon of Bremerton, Wash., and 10 grandchildren.

Lorene Ruth Miller, 91, of La Grande, died Aug. 3. A celebration of life will begin at

11 a.m. Monday at Calvary Chapel in La Grande, 1433 Jefferson Ave. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery in Baker City.

Lorene was born Jan. 27, 1917, to John and Frances Gregory Burnett in

La Grande. She was raised and educated in La Grande and Baker City and graduated from Baker High School in 1935.

She enjoyed gardening, sewing, keeping a clean house and cooking for her husband, Alfred. She also enjoyed Bible studies and fellowship with her church. Her family and friends say that she was an encouraging person to many. She was an active member of Calvary Chapel in La Grande.

She is survived by her sister, Helen Jacobs of Baker City, nephew, Owen "Jake" Jacobs of Evergreen, Colo., niece, Carol Jacobs of La Grande and numerous great-nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by husband, Alfred L. Miller and brother, Russel Joseph Miller.

Virginia Shaffer Roper, 81, of Denver and formerly of La Grande died July 27 in Denver. A memorial service will be Aug. 10 at Horan and McConaty Chapel in Colorado.

Virginia was born April 1926 to Pearl and Leo Westenskow in La Grande. She graduated from La Grande High School and became a legal secretary, working for lawyers in La Grande, Portland, Spokane and Denver.

She lived in six cities since her husband was transferred often by United Airlines, and she made friends easily. She liked flowers, gardening, playing bridge, painting, her pets, world news and travel.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Warren Roper; her son, Dr. Alan Roper and grandson, Cody Roper.
