Smith, Wing

Maxine Lillian Smith, 86, of La Grande, died at a local care center July 18. There will be no services as per family request. Arrangements are being handled by Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

Maxine was born on Sept. 18, 1921, in Weiser, Idaho, to Dewey and Jacqueline (Jefferies) Smith. She graduated from Weiser High School and in 1955 married Sherman Gardner, with whom she had two children, but later divorced. In 1961, she was married to Charles T. Smith until his death in 1995. Charles was an iron worker and they traveled extensively. Maxine moved to La Grande in 1996.

She was a member of the Elks, Eagles and St. Marks Episcopal Church in Madras, and danced with the Umbrella Girls in La Grande. Her hobbies were gardening, bingo, golf and especially fishing.

Maxine was preceded in death by two brothers, Don Lee and Carol Lee, and one grandson, Rod Squire. She is survived by a sister Marilyn Goodman of Nampa, Idaho; her children Scarlotte (Jerry) Gibson of

La Grande; Mike (Linda) Gardner of Madras; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Eloise Wing, 80, of La Grande died July 14. Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 1508 Fourth St., La Grande.

Eloise was born March 1, 1928, to Joseph and Mabel (Haywood) Berg of Verdon, S.D. She attended Bates 267 grade school, graduated from Groton High School, and attended Northern State Teachers College (now Northern State University).

On Sept. 1, 1947, she was united in marriage to Dwayne Wing at Groton, S.D. In 1956 she and Dwayne moved to La Grande.

Eloise is survived by her husband, Dwayne; son, Lee (Pam) Wing of La Grande; brother Bob (Dorothy) Wing of Aberdeen; three grandchildren; three nieces; and one nephew.
