- MOOSE CROSSING: Cove resident Carolyn Richter shared this moose picture she shot on the way home from Troy after a fishing outing on the Grande Ronde River. Driving on the No. 62 road that ends in Elgin, the Richters were about 24 miles out of Troy on that road when this cow moose and her calf stepped out very slowly. âI had my camera ready. What a thrill,â Carolyn Richter said. Photo/Carolyn Richter
About 40 moose call Northeast Oregon home, according to the latest Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife counts.
Most of the region’s moose live north of Elgin between Tollgate and Troy.
The ODFW is currently conducting population counts via airplane. The
ODFW radio collared six moose earlier this year, and when flying,
biologists can detect signals from the radio collars and determine
moose locations.
People need to be aware of the danger of meeting a moose on gravel forest roads and the toll this can take on the moose, the vehicle and potentially drivers and passengers.
