Tourney time OOL tournament may have its share of March Madness a little early

It may not be March but the parity in the Old Oregon League may lead to madness and upsets in this year’s league postseason tournament.

Four of the six boys teams from the league have appeared in the state 1A poll during the season.

“We’re real excited to play,” Cove head coach Todd Gorham said. “The tournament is wide open. Any one of us on any night can win.”

“This year has been unbelievable,” Wallowa head coach Warren Wilson said. “Any team can end up in the top three and head to the state tournament. Several teams are peaking right now.”

“Whoever shows up and plays to win, will win,” Powder Valley head coach Kyle Dixon said.

Just as in the regular season, no team is safe from an upset. The only thing consistent in regular season play has been inconsistency.

The tournament’s top seed, Powder Valley, began the season 9-0 before falling at home to Imbler Jan. 17. The Badgers fell again two weeks later at home to Wallowa.

Powder Valley dominated the Cougars, 66-47, just 20 days prior to the loss.

On Feb. 6, the Badgers eased past Imbler on the road, 66-43.

“Our guys are feeling good right now,” Dixon said. “They’re confident and ready to go. We’ve been playing pretty good the past three or four games.”

Powder Valley enters the tournament as the hottest team, winning in its last four games.

The Badgers are led by their tremendous trio Trenton Dixon, Jordan Pratt and Justin Allen.

Wallowa may have been the league’s biggest surprise, reversing last season’s 3-7 league record to 7-3 this season.

“We’re definitely looking forward to playing,” Wilson said. “A big part of our success in the second half of the season is we have done a better job on the inside. Casey King has come off the bench and done very well for us getting rebounds.”

The Cougars’ phenomenal run to the second place spot is due in large part tof its backcourt.

Tyler Harshfield and Andrew Wilson may be two of the best shooters in Class 1A.

King, Mark Jamerson and Ronald Gladden provide Wallowa with solid presence in the paint.

Cove went from four wins last season to a possible state tournament berth this season.

Jered Witty leads the third-seeded Leopards into the tournament.

While Witty has been a consistent performer for Cove, the emergence of the surrounding players has been the key to the success.

Justin Brainerd provides a solid outside threat for the Leopards and brings the defense to the perimeter.

This opens the inside for Martins Smalkais, who has enjoyed grabbing rebounds and making some easy put-backs for Cove.

Jordan Brown and Scott DelCurto are key factors for the Leopards’ success. If they continue to play beyond their years, fans may be watching Cove in a few weeks in Baker City.

Imbler is always a threat. The Panthers have incredible talent inside and out.

The Panthers may have the league player of the year in Dalton McDaniel.

The senior has dominated the boards even when he is outsized.

Jarod Teeter’s hard working bunch has a solid leader in Nick West. Bryson Ricker can be found all over the court and is one of the better defenders in the tournament.

Joseph is the darkhorse of the tournament. The Eagles can beat anyone in the league. It just depends what Joseph team will show up.

On Jan. 30 the Eagles won at Imbler, 59-40. In early January, Joseph won three of four games.

Tavin Hurley and Erik Steen lead the Eagles into Baker City with hopes of pulling off upsets.

Pine Eagle has yet to win a league game this season and enters the tournament prime for its first win.

Sharp-shooting Jake Traw leads a team that has lost 11 straight and has not won since Dec. 29.

Fans should not expect an upset-free first day in the tournament.

Last season Joseph entered as the three-seed and made a run to the district final before falling by two points to Imbler.

Action begins today at 2:15 p.m. with No. 6 Pine Eagle and No. 3 Cove. Session 2 will conclude with No. 5 Joseph and No. 4 Imbler at 8:15 p.m.
