Economic development may have slowed in Union County during the recession, but it isn’t at a standstill.

Thursday, Bealls, a new clothing store in the La Grande Town Center

on Island Avenue, started a five-day grand opening celebration with a

ribbon cutting, giveaways and prizes.

Bealls is owned by Stage Stores Inc., a national concern that deals in brand name clothing and apparel. Stage Stores operates 735 stores in 38 states under the names of Bealls, Palias Royal, Stage and Peebles.

Renni Little of La Grande is the manager of the new store.

During the grand opening, store visitors entered to win one of two fragrance sets to be given away, as well as one of three $250 Bealls gift cards.

The first 150 visitors received a free environmentally friendly shopping tote, and all visitors will receive a coupon book for five weeks of storewide savings.
