Local RV maker Northwood Manufacturing wound up as the top bidder this week in the sale of the former Fleetwood plant near La Grande.

A sale hearing and auction was conducted Wednesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Riverside, Calif. Ward King of Northwood confirmed this morning that Northwood bought the plant for just over $2 million.

Northwood owner Ron Nash was not available for comment this morning. King said he would prefer leaving comment to Nash. King did say the purchase was “good news” for Union County.

The hearing and sale auction was conducted before Judge Meredith Jury. Arbutus RV and Marine of British Columbia had offered $1.8 million for the plant, but according to rules the offer was subject to overbidding.

Bankrupt Fleetwood Enterprises closed the La Grande plant in March, laying off about 160 workers. At the same time, Fleetwood shut its plant in Pendleton.

Craig Millet, an attorney for Fleetwood, said the order finalizing the sale likely will be entered Friday.

Northwood makes trailers, fifth-wheels and truck campers in a plant in the Union County Airport industrial Park.

Recently, the company built a facility for manufacturing trailer axles and chassis.
