A glimpse of how transportation evolved from carriages through

present day vehicles was on display this past weekend in La Grande.

The public was treated to more than 80 vehicles lining Adams Avenue

Saturday as the Union County Timber Cruisers Car Club presented their

second annual Grande Ronde-A-View Weekend car show. The event,

sponsored by Baxter Auto Parts, offered classic cars, motorcycles and

several vintage carriages.

Many of the cars, which dated from the early 1920s, came from Union County, but about half of the collector vehicles were from various parts of Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

An Oregon 150 exhibit included vintage carriages owned by Smutz and Morgan Carriage Co.; a 1927 Ford Model T owned by Kirk Turnbull; a 1959 Chevy Bel-Air owned by Arlan and MaryAnn Miesner; and a 2010 Chevy Camaro owned by Ed and DiLyn Larson-Hill. In addition, under a Goss Motors canopy, several vehicles rounded out the exhibit of the progression of transportation over the past 150 years: a 2009 Dodge Challenger, courtesy of Frontier Motors; a 2009 Roush 427 Mustang from Legacy Ford; and a 2009 motorcycle provided by AC Power Sports.

The People’s Choice award was presented to Loren and Nancy Clevenger of Kennewick, Wash., for their 1968 Camaro. They also received the Patriotic Award for a mural painted on their truck as a memorial to their son who was killed in Iraq.

The Best of Show award went to Jim and Jody Naughton of Pendleton for their 1928 Ford pick-up with trailer.

Other awards presented were:

Long distance – Paul and Rhonda Sadler from Sisters.

Shovel Ready (stimulus package) – Stan Terry, La Grande, for his Rat Rod project.

Cool Car – David Oldham, Kennewick, Wash., for his 1955 Chevy 210.

Best Coat (paint and exterior) – Pat Loughary, Pendleton, for his 1936 Chevy PU.

Best Seat (interior) – Verl Miller, La Grande, for his 1953 Chevy Bel-Air.

Chick Magnet (car that would turn a lady’s head) – Dick and Nita Sadler, Bend, for their 1960 Corvette.

Checkered Flag (fastest car) – Dan Haberman, Haines, for his 1941 Ford Cabover.

Union County Fire Chiefs (car most likely to catch on fire) – Steve and Rena Muller, La Grande, for their 1930 Model A Ford.

Union County Law Enforcement (car most likely to get a ticket before end of day) – Randy Davis, Redmond, for his 1956 Thunderbird.

Union County Mayors – Dean Davis, Redmond, for his 1970 Dodge Challenger.

On Saturday evening, the public had an opportunity to view a parade of these classic cars as they cruised Adams Avenue to the sounds of music provided by Classic Rock 98.7.

The event was a huge success due to the many donations of raffle items and support of the local merchants and businesses, said Arlan and MaryAnn Miesner of the Timber Cruisers.
