La Grande teams split doubleheaders on the diamond in Baker

BAKER CITY – A few errors cost La Grande a sweep, but the Tigers still managed a split against rival Baker City.

The Bulldogs took the opening game 5-4, and La Grande answered with a 9-4 win.

“The coaching staff really didn’t have an idea how the games would play out,”

La Grande head coach Mark Lanman said. “It showed the kids how good they can be. This should boost the confidence of the young kids.”

Zach Nice took the loss on the mound, while surrendering five hits.

Carson Miller had two hits and drove in a run.

Evan Humphry also had two hits and drove in a pair of runs.

A Logan Lankford home run highlighted the La Grande win.

Lankford hit a three-run shot in the fifth inning, giving the Tigers a 7-2 lead.

Miller took over from there, holding the Bulldogs to five hits.

Nice went 4-for-4 in the game with a pair of doubles.

Buck Arnoldus also collected two doubles.

La Grande will host DeSales in a non-league game Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Tigers bounce back from a rough start

BAKER CITY – Errors turned into runs for the Baker softball team against

La Grande in the opening game of a doubleheader.

The Tigers allowed six runs in the first two innings for a 7-3 loss, but allowed two runs the rest of the day. La Grande pulled out Game 2 5-1.

“The team finally settled down and played some good ball,” Tigers head coach Kevin Kohr said. “We had some communication problems in the first game, and gave them extra outs. You can’t do that and be successful.”

Kelly Walker was saddled with the loss.

Paige Aldred had the lone extra base hit for La Grande, a double.

Walker bounced back to pick up the win in Game 2.

She allowed two hits in seven innings, while allowing the one run.

Brittany Elliot kept her hitting going, finishing the day 4-for-7 with four RBIs.

Shelby Hasse went 3-for-4, and Jenny Tracy added a double.
