- KARA BAXTER of Union was the first woman to finish, placing third overall in the 10K run in Cove Saturday.
COVE – The Brazil family was busy running aroundtown Saturday, and
finished with a handful of medals for their effort after the Cherry
Festival mile and 10-kilometer runs were over.
The Brazil family finished with a win and a seventh place in the
10-kilometer race, along with a second and fourth place finish in the
shorter one mile race. Another Cove family, the Clarks, gave the Brazils
a run for the medals Saturday, taking three of the top six places in
the one mile race.
Sixteen-year old Micah Brazil won the longer race, beating out Chad Carlson for first in the 10-kilometer run, which followed Happy Valley Road and finished just a few yards south of the Union-Cove Highway. Brazil was clocked in at 44:23, almost a minute ahead of Carlson, who doggedly chased Brazil throughout the 6.2-mile course on the gravel road.
Although vehicles would kick up some dust as they drove by the runners on the gravel road, Brazil said that it was the strong sun that bothered him the most on the morning run. “It was really hot,” Brazil said, and that made him take off his shirt during the race.
Kara Baxter pulled away from Kami Hampton near the finish to take third overall with a time of 47:04. Hampton finished fourth in 47:31.
Sharon Ledford finished fifth in 53:30, just eight seconds in front of Todd Whitacre. Hannah Brazil took seventh in 56:41 while Tayde McAndie was able to clock a 57:33 in eighth place and was the last of the runners to break 60 minutes on the dusty, undulating course.
Kim Hefty finished ninth in 1:01:17, followed by Jerianne Whitacre in 1:02:55 and Jenn Johnson at 1:07:32 as 11 runners finished the race.
In the earlier one-mile race at Ascencion School in Cove, it was 11-year-old Nate Clark who won in 7:56, finishing ahead of Naomi Brazil in second with a time of 8:23. Seven-year-old Audrey Clark was third in 9:06 and Sarah Brazil finished fourth in 9:18. Eight-year old Ian Fowler of Lake Oswego finished fifth in 9:54, just ahead of five-year old Reagan Clark in sixth place with a 10:06 time.
A total of 22 runners finished the one mile race.
