Proceeds from concert will provide scholarships for Music Camps @ Wallowa Lake

Two La Grande chamber groups, The Windy Keys Trio and NEOBones will perform a concert Sunday at 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church on Fourth Street.

Proceeds from the concert will provide scholarships for students attending Music Camps @ Wallowa Lake. No admission will be charged, but donations will be appreciated. Receipts for tax deductions will be available.

The Windy Keys Trio (Cherlyne Allen, flute; Elburn Cooper, clarinet; Elizabeth Cooper, piano) will perform music by Malcolm Arnold, Johannes Brahms, and Joseph Makholm.

Cherlyne Allen was for many years principle flute with the Grande Ronde Symphony.

Liz and Elburn Cooper area both experienced music educators and have performed with various ensembles throughout the region.

North East Oregon Bones (NEOBones) could be best described as a loosely affiliated assemblage of whatever trombone players walk through the door to ArtsEast on any

given Sunday or Thursday at

6 p.m.

They have been in existence for more than 20 years and members range in age from high school to retired. The group exists mostly for the fun of making music together, and plays in public “occasionally.”

Music Camps @ Wallowa Lake offer grade 6-12 students two week-long camps, one for woodwind players and one for brass players. Students study with professional artists in a studio setting, an especially important opportunity for residents from rural Oregon where access to private lessons is sometimes limited.

Each camp includes instruction in music theory, rhythm study, music history and chamber ensemble and larger ensemble performance.

A week of day-long immersion in music with professional musicians is a rare experience for students regardless of where they live.

Campers attend from all over the Northwest, with nearly half living in eastern rural areas.

As a reflection of the economy, more than half the requests for financial aid come from this side of the mountains. This concert helps provide access for students regardless of their financial need.
