Herbert F. Frolander

Corvallis

1922-2012

Herbert Farley Frolander, 90, of Corvallis, who spent many of his happiest times hiking, camping, fishing and hunting in the Eagle Cap Wilderness area in the Wallowa Mountains in Northeast Oregon, died Nov. 8 surrounded by his family at home. A private service is planned.

Known as Herb, he was born Sept. 29, 1922, in Providence, R.I., to Gustave Herbert and Edna Violet Frolander. On June 10, 1950, he married Marjorie Claire Dawson in Pawtucket, R.I. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946.

Herb received his B.Ed. degree in 1944 from Rhode Island College of Education, his M.S. in biology from Brown University in 1950 and his Ph.D. in marine biology, jointly from Brown and the University of Rhode Island, in 1955.

Herb was the first faculty member hired by the new Oregon State University Department of Oceanography in 1959. He enjoyed a distinguished career at OSU until his retirement in 1986, including serving as the first administrator of the OSU Sea Grant Program and traveling throughout the U.S. as a National Science Foundation lecturer. He was proud of the work he did with Governor Tom McCall to ensure that Oregon’s beaches would always be public and accessible to everyone.

An avid teacher, Herb regularly requested the privilege of teaching introductory oceanography courses, passing on his passion for the subject to countless students. He greatly valued the contribution of graduate teaching assistants, and at his retirement the Herbert F. Frolander Award for Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant was established.

Herb was also an outdoorsman and naturalist. He cultivated grapes and made his own wine for many years. He enjoyed raising and grafting fruit trees, and as a result many of his trees bore several unusual varieties of fruit.

Herb found beauty in ordinary things, loved the antics of all animals and never failed to celebrate the rain as a gift for all his dear plants. He appreciated the value and beauty of open spaces and fought to preserve them in our communities and beyond.

Herb possessed a strong intellectual curiosity about many fields and pursuits. He built rifles and carved the stocks with meticulous care. He could fabricate or fix most anything, and he and Marjorie built a beautiful home together. Herb and Marjorie supported their children in every endeavor. A great storyteller, Herb loved to tell of his children’s talents and capabilities.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and niece.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Marjorie; children and their spouses, Stephen Frolander and Terri Zenger of Albany, Mike and Kari Frolander of Enterprise, Beth and Jeff Peterman of Corvallis and Tricia and Ron Yates of Salem; and nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Herbert F. Frolander Award for Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Endowment Fund, in care of the OSU Foundation.

Catherine J. Heinz

La Grande

1925-2012

Catherine Julia Heinz, 87, of La Grande, died Nov. 23 at Grande Ronde Hospital. Memorial services will be announced later. Arrangements are under the direction of Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

Catherine was born April 13, 1925, in West New York, N.J., to Herman and Matilda (Jagemann) Wilhelm. She was raised in Hackensack, N.J., and lived for several years in Burns, where she was employed as a nurse’s aide at the Harney County Hospital. She married Leslie Heinz, who passed away in 1988.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and six brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Edward and Karen Heinz of Battle Mountain, Nev., Bernice and Willard Hafer of La Grande and Jerry and Beth Heinz of Seattle; sisters, Teresa Hackett of Redmond, Wash., and Frances Harvey of New Jersey; brother-in-law, Grover Heinz of Burns; and eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren

and three great-great-

grandchildren.

Ruthe K. Taylor

Enterprise

1922-2012

Ruthe Katherine Taylor, 90, died Nov. 26 surrounded by her family.

Ruthe was born April 20,1922, in Lyons. She worked for Pendleton Woolen Mills making military uniforms during World War II. She then met Keith Taylor and they married Aug. 17, 1945.

In 1946 they moved to Waldport, where they ran Taylors Landing on the Alsea River until 1962. In 1964 Ruthe and Keith moved to Enterprise, and they purchased the Circle T Cafe and Fireplace Bar where they had many loved employees and patrons. In 1978 they moved back to Waldport to operate Sea Gull Charters.

After Keith’s death in 1987, Ruthe moved to the Willamette Valley to live near her sisters, and in 2006 she moved to Enterprise to be close to her children.

Ruthe enjoyed quilting and working in her yard. She especially loved her flower gardens.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Maurice and Julie Taylor of Newport, Jim and Jayne Warrener of Joseph, Keith and Kahealani Taylor of Sedro Woolley, Wash., and Rex and Anne Taylor of La Grande; extended family member, Julie Todd of Enterprise; and four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Troy D. Templeton

Elgin

1968-2012

Troy Duane Templeton, 44, of Elgin, died Nov. 22 in a vehicle accident near Elgin. Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

Troy was born March 12, 1968, in Leavenworth, Wash., where he was raised. Twenty years ago he married Rosemary Johnson. Troy was employed as a concrete finisher.

He enjoyed stock car racing, hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Tilly Templeton.

Survivors include his wife, Rosemary of Elgin; children, Serena Radke, Robbie Kast, Jessica Kast and Levi Kast; mother, Carol R. Templeton; siblings, Samantha Templeton, Geriana Templeton and Travis Baker; and seven grandchildren and six nieces and nephews.
