Esther Marie Briney, 55, of Cove died at Grande Ronde Hospital Thursday.

Funeral services will be held at the Faith Center in Island City on Sunday, June 2, at 2 p.m. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Wallowa

Services for Louise E. Scott, 87, of Wallowa will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Katherine Catholic Church in Enterprise. Rosary will be said at 6 p.m. on Monday at Bollman Funeral Home. Scott died May 29. A full obituary will be published later.

‘Jo’ Hug

La Grande

1922-2013

Laura Josephine “Jo” Hug, 91, of La Grande and formerly of Elgin, died May 20 at her home. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Summerville Cemetery Chapel.

Jo was born Jan. 25, 1922, the daughter of Bauthis Henkle and Etta (Ghormley) Schaffer, in Corvallis. After high school, she attended two years of college at Oregon State before moving to Maryland to work for the military department. In 1945, she married Russell Hug and in 1962 moved to Summerville to ranch until 1973 when they purchased Wayt’s Department Store in Elgin, which they operated until 1988 and then retired.

In 1956, the family built a cabin at Wallowa Lake, and the family enjoyed time there fishing for many years. She was active with the Elgin Community Center and the Good Sam Club. For 50 years, she was involved with an Art Research Group that met twice a month. She was an avid reader, and when she moved into the Grande Ronde Retirement Center, she was put in charge of the library.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, David and Gail Hug of Summerville; son, Michael Hug of Hermiston; daughter, Karen Hug of Bend; brother and sister-in-law, John and Patricia Schaffer of Portland; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, in 2002.

In lieu of flowers, a

donation can be made to a disabled veterans or wounded warrior organization.

Glenda Lorraine Curl Edvalson

Formerly of Union

1928-2013

Glenda Lorraine Curl Edvalson, 84, of Milton-Freewater and formerly of Union, died May 23 in Tigard under her daughter’s care.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Milton-Freewater with Bishop John Wells conducting. Viewing for family and friends will be held at 10 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Concluding services and interment will follow at the Union Cemetery in Union at 3 p.m.

Glenda was born Dec. 21, 1928, to Dudley Walter Curl and Katie Ida Kohler Curl. She lived 40 years of her life in Union.

After being diagnosed with cancer much care was given by her daughters and Park Manor in Walla Walla, Wash.

Glenda married Elmer Kohler Edvalson on Jan. 2, 1948. Together the couple had six children. Glenda’s greatest pride was her children and grandchildren. She loved them unconditionally and they loved her. Because of her gentle and loving nature she was the grandma magnet.

In 1967, they moved from Union to Walla Walla for two years before settling in Milton-Freewater in 1969, where she resided till her health failed.

Glenda’s interests and hobbies were art, sketching with charcoal and pencil, mostly people, birds and nature; reading; gardening and flowers and cooking. She was known for making the best pies.

Her greatest love was dancing. She and Elmer would go to the grange every Saturday until Elmer’s health failed.

In her empty-nester years, Glenda and Elmer loved serving together in the community. They would can more than 100 jars of each variety of fruit and give them to the widowed or less fortunate. They also helped at the Breadbasket, collecting and distributing food to those in need.

Survivors include her daughters, Lorraine Maughan and spouse, Brent, of Spokane, Sherri Walton and spouse, Kent, of Tigard and Kelly Campbell O’Dell and spouse, Randy, of Milton-Freewater; 21 grandchildren and 35 great-grand-children. Other survivors are Kevin Campbell, Val Taylor and Linda

Edvalson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Edvalson, who died June 23, 2012; her son, Allen Ray Edvalson, who died at the age of 9; daughter, Janell Taylor, and son, Tom Edvalson, both of whom died in 2003; her sister, Betty Orton; and her granddaughter, Natalee Marie Walton, who died in 2010.

Millard ‘Mid’ E. Noland

Millard “Mid” E. Noland died May 21 at Alpine House, Joseph. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lostine Cemetary with dinner to follow at the VFW Hall, 800 N. River St., Enterprise.

Mid was born July 1, 1924, at Cabarton, Idaho, to Mid and Clara (Matthews) Noland. Mid grew up in that area and eventually moved to New Meadows, Idaho, where he would have graduated high school, but Mid was granted an early diploma so he could enter the Army. He entered March 10, 1943, and served until March 31, 1946. He fought in WWII in Eastern Europe.

Mid returned from WWII to New Meadows, where he met and fell in love with Peggie J. Harris. They were married July 18, 1947, in Boise, Idaho.

Mid started working for J.I. Morgan Inc. logging. He and Peggie had two children, Ronald in 1949 and Jane in 1952. The Nolands were in New Meadows until 1964, when J.I. Morgan logging expanded to Oregon and Mid was asked to move as superintendent of Morgan of Ore. Logging. The spring of 1965 Peggie and the kids joined Mid in Wallowa.

Mid enjoyed horseback riding, rodeo, snow skiing, golf and being with family and good friends. He retired from Morgan of Ore. in the early 1980s, and he and Peg traveled and enjoyed golf and seeing more of the country. His family and friends will always remember his quick wit, twinkling eyes and great character. He loved to say “O’C’Ole” to the kids, which meant “See ya later.”

Mid was called “Squint Eye” by his work crew, due to an old injury. His left eye was damaged and went closed if he was angry. His golf buddies called him “Ole Logger.”

Mid was a member of the Masonic and Eastern Star Lodges, Enterprise Elks Lodge, Wallowa Methodist Church and Alpine Golf Course.

He is survived by wife, Peggie; sister, June Liming of Boise, Idaho; son, Ronald (Cindy) Noland of Hermiston; daughter, Jane (Terry) McArtor of Lostine; four grandchildren; and 6-1/2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Ryan McArtor.

Winnifred Fayrene Zollman

Winnifred “Winnie” Fayrene Lindsley Zollman died at Wallowa Memorial Hospital on May 21.

A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. today at the Enterprise Cemetery.

Winnie was born on Jan. 28, 1929, in Wetmore, Mich., to Clayton Arzeno and Anna Mae Weis Lindsley. Winnie was the third child born in a family having nine siblings: June, Gordon, Stanley, Arvilla, Verlyn, Clayton, Lenard, Juanita and Marshall.

Minnie grew up in Long Beach, Wash. She met Paul Claude Zollman, a soldier stationed at Fort Canby, Wash., and married him on Nov. 16, 1945. They moved to Wallowa County, where Paul was farming with his family. The couple had three sons: Rodney Paul, Steven Wayne and Randy Dwayne.

In 1963, the family bought a small farm and moved to Clatskanie. While there, Winnie worked for the postal service running a mail route.

In 1964, the family moved back to Wallowa, where they lived until Paul’s death in April 1983.

Winnie then moved to Enterprise next to Steven and Joyce and family, where she lived for the next 23 years until moving to Alpine House assisted living and then to Wallowa Valley Care Center, where she lived until her death.

Winnie was a member of the Enterprise Nazarene Church and the Enterprise VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 4307.

Winnie was preceded in death by her parents, seven siblings, a great-grandson and her husband, Paul.

She is survived by two brothers, Clayton Lindsley of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Leonard Lindsley of Cathlamet, Wash.; her three sons and their wives, Rodney and Karina of La Grande, Steven and Joyce of Enterprise and Randy and Marlene of Wallowa; nine grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.

Darleen Simonis

La Grande

1931-2013

Darleen Simonis, age 81, of La Grande, died May 26, 2013 at her home. Acelebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation and Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh Street in La Grande.

Darleen was born on Oct. 25, 1931, the daughter of Lee and Elsie Marie (Boness) McLaughlin, in Alliance, Neb. When she was 14, the family moved to Oregon and she graduated from Imbler High School in 1949. On May 11, 1949 she married George Raymond Simonis. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother and was a hard working farmer alongside her husband. She enjoyed gardening, her flowers, canning, animals of all kinds and wildlife. She worked at the voting site at Hot Lake for many years and was a longtime blood donor.

Survivors include her children, Sandra “Jeanne” Simonis of Walla Walla, Susan and Bill Thomas of Union and Janet Stowell of La Grande; siblings, Kate Cochran of

La Grande, Gerry Marcum of La Grande, Ed McLaughlin of Twin Falls, Idaho, and

Connie Leavitt of Salem; nine grandchildren; 25 great- grandchildren and another on the way; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nancy Lee Simonis in 1950, her husband on Dec. 5, 2011, and siblings, Marge Riggs and Howard, Lee and Ivan McLaughlin.

Mary I. Poffenberger

Formerly of Wallowa County

1932-2013

Mary I. Poffenberger, formerly of Wallowa County, and Juliaetta, Idaho, died May 17 in Philomath.

Mary was born Feb. 13, 1932, to Walter and Lela (Fuller) Stace in Payette, Idaho, where she attended school. She met the love of her life Wendell (Red) Poffenberger in Wallowa County, and they were married Aug. 15, 1949. They celebrated 54 years of marriage until Red preceded her in death in 2004.

Mary and Red traveled with his jobs in construction and logging while adding to the family two boys and five girls. Mary was a loving wife and mother – a wonderful cook, baker and homemaker. She enjoyed canning and making meals from scratch, and she passed down this passion to all her children.

While the children attended school, Mary worked at the Wallowa Senior Meal Site and enjoyed nurturing all she came into contact with. Mary loved many things, including her family and the outdoors, but mostly she loved her coffee. There was always a pot on, and you were welcome to come join her anytime. She liked to tease the kids that if they drank the coffee when they were young, their knees would turn black.

Mary had the patience of a saint and a heart of gold. She would go without if she thought someone was in greater need. Having seven children could be a task for any mother, so when she would struggle to call out a particular name, she would laugh and just call what the kids would call “roll call” by saying everyone’s name until she came to the one she wanted.

Her home was always full of children; she was Mom and Gramma to many.

She will be greatly missed by more than 60 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, sister, brother and husband.

She is survived by son, Greg (Vicki) of Lewiston, Idaho; daughter, Audrey (Jason) of Philomath; son, Patrick of Pendleton; daughter, Becky of Lapwai, Idaho; daughter, Susan of Lewiston; daughter, Tammy of Clarkston, Wash., and daughter, Ann (Sean) of Yuma, Ariz.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life potluck is scheduled for 2 p.m. June 22 at Guardian Angel Barn, 2421 Vineyard Ave., Lewiston, Idaho.
