CHURCH HIGHLIGHTS: Sermon focus is ‘The Wisdom of God’

COVE – The Cove United Methodist Church will gather at 9 a.m. to celebrate the fourth Sunday after the Epiphany. The sermon is titled “The Wisdom of God.” The church will study the wisdom of God and power of Jesus. Scriptures are Micah 6:1-8, Psalm 15, 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 and Matthew 5:1-12.
The men’s breakfast takes place at 8 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month in the basement fellowship hall.
Bible study takes place at 6:30 p.m. each Wednesday in the fellowship hall.
Scouts lead Super Bowl worship service
Boy Scout Troop 512 will lead the 9:30 a.m. Scout Super Bowl worship service at the First Presbyterian Church Sunday. The Scouts will also be serving a delicious pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. before worship and then afterward until noon. The church supports the troop and encourages all to attend to help the group in their activities and worthy goals. Wednesday Night Community Fellowship dinner will start at 6 p.m.
Church recognizes religious custom
Sunday, Faith Lutheran Church recognizes the Presentation of Our Lord. This was a religious custom in which Jesus Christ was brought to the temple after 40 days of purification.
Sunday School is at
8:45 a.m., the Divine Service at 10 a.m. A potluck follows this first Sunday of the month’s service.
Methodists hold communion service
La Grande United Methodist Church will hold communion service at 10 a.m. Sunday. Everyone who desires to experience God and Christ in the bread and the fruit of the vine are welcome. In keeping with the church’s open communion, unfermented grape juice is used in the place of wine.
Church celebrates Souper Bowl
COVE – Grace Community Lutheran Church worship service begins at 10 a.m. Sunday with Pastor Carl Seelhoff’s sermon titled, “Blessed Are The Poor in Spirit.” Sunday school for all ages is at 9 a.m. The kids will conduct a Souper Bowl of Caring skit and collecting money and food for the Union/Cove food banks and backpack program. The church meets at the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
‘Blessed’ is theme
for study, service
ENTERPRISE – “Blessed,” is the word Jesus repeated in Matthew 5:1-12, and that is the theme for 9:30 a.m. Bible study and 11 a.m. communion service at Enterprise Community Congregational Church Sunday. Men’s fellowship meets at 8 a.m. the first Saturday of the month at the Red Rooster.
Church observes presentation feast
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church will observe the fourth Sunday after the Epiphany and the feast of the Presentation with Holy Eucharist at 9 a.m. The Rev. Kathryn Macek will preside and preach. The first Sunday Forum will follow the service. Morning Prayer is offered at 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the chapel. A midweek Eucharist is offered at 12:15 p.m. Wednesdays, also in the chapel.

Youth observe ‘Souper Bowl Sunday’
Zion Lutheran Church will celebrate the fourth Sunday after Epiphany with Holy Communion. Oregon Synod Bishop Dave Brauer-Rieke will preach at the 9:30 a.m. worship service.
The youth will observe “Souper Bowl Sunday” by taking cash donations. Proceeds go to the Friday Backpack Program and Neighbor-to-Neighbor Ministries. Matching funds will be applied for from Thrivent Insurance for Lutherans.
Following the service, Bishop Brauer-Rieke will speak with Zion members during a discussion and question meeting. A potluck luncheon will follow at noon.
The quilters will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Overcome the negative in life
What does God offer when it comes to overcoming the negative in your life whether it be habits, attitude or stress?
That question will be addressed when the Cove Seventh-day Adventist church meets at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, and the La Grande SDA church meets at 11 a.m.
Lesson is on
‘The Gift of Grace’
Doug Edmonds’ lesson Sunday at the Church of Christ will be “The Gift of Grace: Godless Religion” John 8:37-44. Communion is taken every Sunday. Sunday morning classes are from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., and worship service follows at 10:30 a.m. A children’s church is held during the sermon for the little ones. Wednesday small groups are at 7 p.m.
‘Absolutely Scandalous!’ is title
UNION – “Absolutely Scandalous!” is the title of Pastor Sue Peeples’ message for the 11 a.m. Sunday service at the United Methodist Church.
The church hosts senior lunch at noon Tuesday. Currently, the church is looking for cooks to alternate once every couple months to cover for Betty Bronson, who is leaving on a mission. If interested, call Sue Briggs at 541-562-5748.

5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

“Happy are people who …” is Pastor Don Dunn’s message at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 901 Penn Ave. Worship begins at 10 a.m.
Cookie Gram orders will be accepted in the church office until Feb. 7 at $4.50 per dozen or $8 per two dozen. Deliveries of Cookie Grams will be Feb. 13-14.
