CHURCH HIGHLIGHTS: Sermon title is ‘People of God’

The fifth Sunday after Epiphany will be celebrated this week at the 9:30 a.m. worship service at the First Presbyterian Church. The sermon, “People of God,” will be based on 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 and Matthew 5:1-20. Fellowship and Christian Education will follow the service.

The Wednesday Night Community Fellowship dinner begins at 6 p.m.

Lord’s Sermon on

the Mount is focus

The sermons at Faith Lutheran for the next three Sundays will use Matthew Chapter 5, which is the beginning of the Lord’s Sermon on the Mount.

This week, Jesus encourages his hearers to be “salt and light” in the world in order that people will be led to “praise your Father in heaven.” Christianity involves all Scripture in which Jesus Christ is the gospel and he assures us, “Do not think I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17).

Services are at 10 a.m. in La Grande and 2 p.m. in Enterprise. Following the service in La Grande, starting at about 11 a.m., will be Faith Lutheran’s Annual Cake Walk to support Bethesda Homes, a home for the handicapped.

Pastor speaks about Christian formation

Pastor Don Dunn will speak about “The Process of Christian Formation” from Matthew 5:13-20, at the

10 a.m. worship service at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 901 Penn Ave.

Church lets its light shine Sunday

ENTERPRISE – “Let Your Light Shine,” from Matthew 5:13-20, brightens Bible study at 9:30 a.m. and worship at

11 a.m. at the Enterprise Community Congregational Church Sunday.

Book club meets Sunday evening

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church will observe the fifth Sunday after the Epiphany with Holy Eucharist at 9 a.m. The Rev. Kathryn Macek will preside and preach. The book club will meet at 6 p.m. Sunday in the parish hall. Those attending will share a light potluck supper and report on a book they have recently read. St. Ann’s Guild will hold its monthly meeting at 2 p.m. Feb. 14 in the parish hall.

Morning Prayer is offered at 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the chapel. A midweek Eucharist is offered at 12:15 p.m. Wednesdays, also in the chapel.

Songs of thanks highlight service

COVE – Grace Community Lutheran worship service will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday with songs of thanksgiving and a sermon by Pastor Carl Seelhoff. Sunday school for all ages is at 9 a.m. During fellowship, the congregation will thank God for the food and money, with Thrivent matching funds, the congregation collected for Souper Bowl Sunday.

After fellowship, the kids will visit a sheep farm to see the new lambs, an annual event. The church meets at the Cove Seventh-day Adventist Church.

‘Wisdom of the Beatitudes’ is focus

COVE – The Cove United Methodist Church service begins at 9 a.m. This week, the church is celebrating the fifth Sunday after the Epiphany and communion service. All are welcome. The sermon is titled “Wisdom of the Beatitudes.” The congregation is studying the wisdom of God and the power of Jesus.

Scriptures for Sunday are Isaiah 58:1-9a, (9b-12); Psalm 112:1-9, (10); 1 Corinthians 2:1-12, (13-16) and Matthew 5:13-20

Men’s breakfast is served on the first Saturday of each month at 8 a.m. in the basement fellowship hall.

Bible study starts at

6:30 p.m. each Wednesday in the fellowship hall. All are welcome. This Wednesday, the focus will be on the Beatitudes in Matthew.
