HIGHLIGHTS: Message examines challenges of ‘the end’

The sermon at Faith Lutheran Church in La Grande will use scripture from Mark 13:1-13. In these verses Jesus gives warnings and explanations about the end of this age, and encourages us to endure the challenges, for “the one who endures to the end will be saved” (vs. 13). Following the Divine Service there will be a luncheon and then the annual voters meeting.
‘Torn Down to Build Up’ is sermon title
The 25th Sunday after Pentecost will be celebrated during the 9:30 a.m. worship service at the First Presbyterian Church in La Grande. The sermon, “Torn Down to Build Up,” will be based on 1 Samuel 2:1-10 and Mark 13: 1-8. Holy Communion will also be served. Fellowship follows the service.
The Wednesday Night Community Fellowship dinner begins at 6 p.m. with choir practice to follow at 7 p.m.
Sunday service begins with Morning Prayer
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in La Grande will observe the 25th Sunday after Pentecost with Morning Prayer at 9 a.m. Arnold Coe will officiate.
Parishioners are reminded to bring their items for the holiday bazaar to the parish hall.
The church holds two weekday prayer services: Centering Prayer on Tuesdays and Morning Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer on Thursdays; both services take place in the chapel at 8:30 a.m. A midweek Eucharist is offered Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m., also in the chapel.
Students welcomed to Young Life Club
COVE – Grace Community Lutheran Church in Cove continues to celebrate Pentecost with a worship service beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Carl Seelhoff’s sermon, “No One Knows the Day or the Hour,” is taken from Mark 13. Adult Sunday school meets at 9 a.m. Fellowship follows the service.
Union County Young Life Club meets at 7 p.m. every Monday at Ascension School’s Founders Hall in Cove. High school kids from the valley are welcome to attend.
Transportation to the worship service and Thursday’s men’s Bible study is available.
Monday night Bible study offered in Imbler
The 9:30 a.m. worship service at Zion Lutheran Church in La Grande will be led by Pastor Colleen Nelson. A time of fellowship follows.
Monday evening there will be a Bible study at the home of Ruth Zemke, 480 Esther Ave., in Imbler. Tuesday morning the Quilters will meet at Zion at 9 a.m.
Fresh Food Alliance offered every Tuesday
COVE – This week the 9 a.m. service at the Cove Methodist Church will be led by Sue Peeples, a lay servant assigned to the Union United Methodist Church who is doing a rotation within the Methodist churches in the Grande Ronde Valley. Following the service is a coffee fellowship.
The Cove Food Pantry is offered from 9 a.m. to noon the third Saturday of the month. Fresh Food Alliance is on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
A Harvest Dinner will be served on Saturday. A baked food sale begins at 11 a.m. and dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The meal will be a full turkey dinner topped off with homemade apple or pumpkin pie.
Revival participants share testimony
The La Grande Seventh-day Adventist Church’s Saturday morning service begins at 11 a.m. Attendees of the recent “All About Jesus” revival are invited to share their testimony as to how God stirred in their hearts as a result of the revival messages.
Before the service, the “Savior of the World” series resumes at 9:30 a.m. Pastor Mike’s multi-media lessons capture the heart of God, His love and grace, and the ministry of reconciliation between humanity and Himself. Participants will receive a lesson guide for each subject.
Lifeline of Hope helps orphans worldwide
At the La Grande Church of Christ this Sunday Brian Kaiser will present information about Lifeline of Hope, an organization that helps orphans throughout the world. Communion is taken every Sunday. Sunday morning classes are from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., and the worship service follows at 10:30 a.m. “Children’s church” is available during the sermon for kids age 2 through kindergarten.
Wednesday small groups are at 7 p.m. at various home locations.
Pastor speaks on trusting God
Pastor Ray Smith will speak on “The Heiden Effect” at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in La Grade. His message, from Matthew 16:13-20, looks at trusting and connecting with God. Worship begins at 10 a.m.
There will be a potluck luncheon following worship and shoe boxes will be wrapped for Operation Christmas Child. The congregants are collecting filled shoe boxes, which will be donated Nov. 23 and distributed worldwide by Samaritan’s Purse, a humanitarian aid organization.
