La Grande may have temporarily been the capital of Cascadia.
Someone put the Cascadia Doug flag atop the old Independent Order of Odd Fellows building in downtown La Grande over the weekend.
The IOOF/Renegade building is currently owned by the La Grande Urban Renewal District.
Urban Renewal Agency Manager Robert Strope said he was notified that the flag was flying on top of the building Monday.
“Somebody went up there without our permission and put it up,” he said. “That was not something that we sanctioned.”
It’s unknown when exactly the flag went up, but it was flying on Saturday.
Due to wet weather, the flag could not be safely
removed Monday, Strope said. It was taken down Tuesday.
The Cascadia Doug flag “is a symbol for the natural beauty and inspiration that the Pacific Northwest provides, and is a direct representation of the bioregion,” according to cascadianow.org.
According to the website, the Cascadia movement is more than a bioregion and a place but also a “social movement dedicated to empowering every person to be active and engaged about issues they care about, building toward a bioregion that is vibrant, autonomous, sustainable and accountable for it’s impact.”
Cascadia generally includes Oregon, Washington, portions of other U.S. states and British Columbia, Canada.
