HIGHLIGHTS: Speaker focuses on Adventist education

At Saturday’s service at the La Grande Seventh-day Adventist Church, guest speaker Marvin Thorman, principal of Gem State Adventist Academy, will speak on the importance and purpose of Adventist Christian education in today’s world. The service begins at 11 a.m.
Service looks at John the Baptist’s ministry
John 1:19-34 will be the expository (verse by verse) preaching focus of the 11 a.m. worship service presented by Pastor Phil Garwood at Grace Bible Church in La Grande. These verses give John’s account of the purpose of John the Baptist’s ministry.
Biblical worldview studies are offered to teens and older from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
Christ was rejected by his hometown
COVE – This week Grace Community Lutheran Church in Cove celebrates the third Sunday of Epiphany with a worship service beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Carl Seelhoff will preach on Jesus’ rejection in Nazareth, his hometown, taken from Luke 4. Adult Sunday school starts at 9 a.m. Fellowship follows the service.
Men’s Bible study and breakfast meets every Thursday at 7:30 a.m. All activities are held at the Cove Seventh-day Adventist Church.
St. Peter’s offers midweek Eucharist
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church will observe the third Sunday after the Epiphany with Holy Eucharist at 9 a.m. The Rev. Kathryn Macek will preside and preach. The Annual Meeting of the Parish will take place following the service, during which the business of the parish will be discussed, including the 2016 budget.
Centering Prayer is offered at 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays; a midweek Eucharist is offered at 12:15 p.m. Wednesdays; and Morning Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer is offered at 8:30 a.m. Thursdays. Weekday services are in the chapel.
Message lays out ‘Words of Love’
The third Sunday after Epiphany will be celebrated during the 9:30 a.m. worship service at the First Presbyterian Church in La Grande. The sermon, “Words of Love,” will be based on 1 Corinthians:1-13 and Luke 4:20-30. Fellowship will follow the service.
The 6 p.m. Wednesday Night Community Fellowship dinners continue at the PFC this week.
Sermon continues journey through Bible
Doug Edmonds at theLa Grande Church of Christ will present the lesson “God with Us: Royal Obedience.” Continuing the journey through the Bible, the message will look at the life of Samuel. Communion is taken every Sunday. Sunday morning classes for all ages begin at 9:30 a.m., and the worship service follows at 10:30 a.m. Kingdom Kids is offered during the sermon for children age 2 through kindergarten.
Wednesdays at 7 p.m. the video series “Islam, the Quran and Christianity” is shown. “Getting to Know Your Bible” is aired at 7:30 p.m. Monday-Friday on DTV channel 377.
Men meet for no-host breakfast, fellowship
Pastor Ray Smith will speak on “feeling rejected, but finding hope,” drawn from Matthew 21:33-43, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in La Grande. Worship begins at 10 a.m.
The men’s breakfast group will meet at the Smokehouse Restaurant from 8 a.m. toa.m. Monday morning for a no-host breakfast and fellowship.
Spiritual healing brings wholeness
The La Grande United Methodist Church will have a service of healing at 10 a.m. A service of healing is not a service of curing, but provides an atmosphere in which healing can happen. Spiritual healing is God’s work of offering people balance, harmony and wholeness of body, mind, spirit and relationships through confession, forgiveness and reconciliation. While childcare is available, all ages are welcome in the service.
Sermon is on how Jesus fulfilled Scripture
The sermon at Faith Lutheran Church in La Grande will be based on Luke 4:16-30. In these verses Jesus was in His hometown, Nazareth. He gathered with other faithful people at the established worship center and read a passage from Isaiah “to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (vs. 19). Jesus explained, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” (vs. 21).
Worship services are in La Grande at 10 a.m. and in Enterprise at 2 p.m.
Women’s Bible study meets Tuesday
Zion Lutheran Church in La Grande will worship at 9:30 a.m. with Pastor Colleen Nelson, followed by a time of fellowship.
Tuesday there will be a women’s Bible Study at9:30 a.m. at the church. Also on Tuesday, the Student Worship Art Team will meet at the church at 6:30 p.m.
