HIGHLIGHTS: Service focuses on Upper Room

LA GRANDE, ENTERPRISE – The sermon at Faith Lutheran Church in La Grande will be on Luke’s account of Jesus being “led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days” (Luke 4:1-2). Jesus was challenged through those days with a lack of necessities, as well as being tempted.
Jesus was victorious as He wielded the Word of God, the very same Word we have been given in Holy Scripture. Services are at 10 a.m. in La Grande and 2 p.m. in Enterprise.
This Wednesday at 7 p.m. Faith Lutheran’s Midweek Lenten Service will focus on the “Place of Passion – the Upper Room.”
No-host luncheon follows service
LA GRANDE -Pastor Ray Smith’s message on Valentine’s Day will be “Asking for Forgiveness” at La Grande’s First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He will explore Matthew 6:9-15 at this
10 a.m. worship service.
Following worship at
11:45 a.m., there will be a no-host luncheon at the Smokehouse Restaurant. All are welcome.
Gattons share conversion stories
LA GRANDE -The La Grande Seventh-day Adventist Church will have two services this Saturday. Special guests Dave Gatton will speak at 9:30 a.m. and Cheri Gatton will speak at the 11 a.m. service.
The Grattons will share their conversion stories and personal experiences of God’s grace and mercy, which also saved their
marriage.
An author and speaker, Cheri also leads the Idaho Conference of SDA Women’s Ministries. Dave is the sales manager for the Pacific Press Publishing Association in Nampa, Idaho.
New series studies spiritual leaders
LA GRANDE -Zion Lutheran Church in La Grande will worship at 9:30 a.m. with Pastor Colleen Nelson.
Fellowship and fair trade coffee follows.
Monday at 7 p.m. the women’s Bible study will be held at the home of Ruth Zemke, 480 Esther Avenue in Imbler.
Tuesday the Quilters meet at 9 a.m. to make quilts for Lutheran World Relief. That evening at
6:30 p.m. the StudentWorshipArtTeam will meet.
Wednesday is the beginning of a noon study series to be held through March 9 titled “In God’s Name.”
The subtitle of this 2007
National Geographic special is “Wisdom from the World’s Great Spiritual Leaders,” and the intent is to reflect on the post-9/11 world.
Participants are asked to gather in the fellowship hall and may bring lunch or a snack.
Message explores Christ’s temptation
COVE – Grace Community Church in Cove will celebrate the first Sunday of Lent with a worship service beginning at 10 a.m.
Pastor Carl Seelhoff’s sermon will be “Baptized with Fire, Tested,” taken from Luke 4. In this Scripture,
Jesus is tempted by the Devil. Adult Sunday school begins at 9 a.m., and fellowship follows the service.
Young Life Club meets at 7 p.m. every Monday night at the Cove Ascension School.
All high school kids are welcome. Transportation is available to all church events.
Study series on saints begins Tuesday
LA GRANDE – St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in La Grande will observe the first Sunday in Lent with Holy Eucharist at 9 a.m. The Rev. Kathryn Macek will preside and preach.
Sunday evening the book club will meet at 6 p.m. in the parish hall.
Those attending are asked to bring a dish to share.
Centering Prayer is offered Tuesdays, and Morning Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer is offered Thursdays. Both services are at 8:30 a.m. in the chapel.
A midweek Eucharist is offered at 12:15 p.m. Wednesdays, also in the chapel.
A Lenten soup supper and five-week study series on the saints will begin Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the parish hall. All are invited.
Are Sundays better than sundaes?
LA GRANDE -The first Sunday in Lent will be celebrated during the 9:30 a.m. worship service at the First Presbyterian Church in La Grande. The sermon, “Our Sundays Are Better Than DQ’s,” is based on John 1:43-51 and Romans 10: 5-13. Fellowship will follow the service.
The Wednesday night Community Fellowship Dinner begins at 6 p.m.
Elgin church hosts Saturday dinner
ELGIN – Lay speaker Kay Durham will give the sermon at the Elgin United Methodist Church 11 a.m. service. Based on Deuteronomy 26 1-11, the sermon will be “God Said, I Have Plans for You!”
The church is hosting a Valentine dinner Saturday.
There will be two settings, at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Dinner will include pork chops with cranberries,
garlic potatoes, glazed carrots, salad and a dessert bar.
