BRIEFLY: Church hosts Food Pantry tomorrow

COVE – On this second Sunday of Lent, the Cove United Methodist Church service will begin at 9 a.m. with Rev. Ernest Smith leading the worship. Communion will be served to all who wish to partake.

This Saturday the church hosts the community Food Pantry from 9 a.m. to noon. The Food Pantry is open on the third Saturday of every month. The Fresh Food

Alliance is held on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The church is also holding a Bible study. Call 541-568-4538 for information.

King Solomon is focus of message

Doug Edmonds at the La Grande Church of Christ this Sunday will present the lesson “God with Us: A Real Wise Guy.”

Continuing the journey through the Bible, the message will look at the life of King Solomon. Communion is taken every Sunday. Sunday morning classes for all ages are from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., and the worship service follows at 10:30 a.m. “Kingdom Kids” is offered during the sermon for children age 2 through kindergarten.

Wednesday night small groups continue to meet at various homes.

Pastor Doug encourages the community to go to www.worldbibleschool.org for free Bible studies and to watch “Getting to Know Your Bible,” DTV channel 377, at 7:30 p.m. weekdays.

Lenten series studies the saints Tuesday

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in La Grande will observe the second Sunday of Lent with Holy Eucharist at 9 a.m. The Rev. Kathryn Macek will preside and preach.

The vestry will meet after the service.

Centering Prayer is offered Tuesdays and Morning Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer is offered Thursdays. Both services begin at 8:30 a.m. in the

chapel. A midweek Eucharist is offered at 12:15 p.m. Wednesdays., also in the chapel.

The Lenten soup supper and study series on the saints continues Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. in the parish hall. All are invited.

Women’s Bible study meets Tuesday

Zion Lutheran Church in La Grande will worship at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Sunday school for children is available during the sermon. Fellowship and fair trade coffee follows the service.

Women’s Bible study will be held at the church Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. That evening at 6:30 p.m. the StudentWorshipArtTeam will meet at the church.

The study series “In God’s Name” is held Wednesdays at noon through March 9 in the fellowship hall. Participants may bring a lunch or a snack. The series was a 2007 National Geographic special exploring the “World’s Great Spiritual Leaders” and the post-9/11 world.

Jesus opens ‘The Narrow Gate’

COVE – Grace Community Church will celebrate the second Sunday of Lent with a contemporary worship service beginning at

10 a.m. Pastor Carl Seelhoff’s sermon, “The Narrow Gate,” is taken from Luke 13 where Jesus talks about who will be saved. Adult Sunday school begins at 9 a.m. Fellowship follows the service.

A men’s Bible study and breakfast meets every Thursday at 7:30 a.m. Transportation is available for both the worship service and Bible study.

Sermon tells the story of Nicodemus

John 3:1-15 will be the expository preaching text of pastor Phil Garwood at the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service at Grace Bible Church in La Grande. The Scripture tells the account of the Jewish ruler Nicodemus, who secretly visited Jesus one evening to find out who he really was. Jesus told him that to understand spiritual matters you must be “born again.” Bible study begins at 9:30 a.m. and will continue studying from the 9Marks series.

Biblical worldview studies for teens and older are offered every Thursday evening from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Service includes children’s story

In Saturday’s message at the La Grande Seventh-day Adventist Church, Pastor Mike Armayor will back up the claim there are two prerequisites to enter eternal life and God’s kingdom of glory. The teaching will look at the great stories of people who believed in the God of heaven and earth. The 11 a.m. service will also include a children’s story and worship in song.

Gethsemane is focus of Lenten service

The sermon at the 11 a.m. service at La Grande’s Faith Lutheran Church will use Luke 4:31-35. These verses tell of Jesus’ desire for people to gather with Him and of His steadfast resolve to go to Jerusalem even though Herod wanted to kill Him there.

Wednesday’s 7 p.m. midweek Lenten service will consider the “Place of

Passion: Gethsemane, A Place of Anguish.”

It’s Martha vs. Mary

Pastor Ray Smith’s message at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in La Grande on the second Sunday of Lent will be “The Two Sisters.” The message will look at the story of Mary and Martha from Luke 10:38-42 and explore the best and worst of each sister’s faith. Worship begins at

10 a.m.
