HIGHLIGHTS: Episcopal book club meets Sunday

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in La Grande will observe the fifth Sunday of Lent with Holy Eucharist at 9 a.m. The Rev. Kathryn Macek will preside and preach.

The book club will meet Sunday evening at 6 p.m. in the parish hall.

Centering Prayer isoffered Tuesdays and Morning Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer is offered Thursdays; both services begin at 8:30 a.m. in the chapel. A midweek Eucharist is offered Wednesdays at

12:15 p.m., also in the chapel.

Valley Reformed Church moves

Valley Reformed Church will be meeting in the conference room of the Union County Extension building, 10507 N. McAlister (across from Bronson’s) in Island City, through March 27.

Message talks about the Golden Rule

The fifth Sunday of Lent will be celebrated during the 9:30 a.m. worship service at the First Presbyterian Church in La Grande. The sermon, “Promotions and Partners,” will be based on Isaiah 41:17-20 and Luke 6:17-31, including: “Do to others as you would have them do to you,” one of the many truisms from the Sermon on the Mount. Fellowship will follow the service.

The Wednesday Night Community Fellowship Dinner begins at 6 p.m.

Lunch at Smokehouse follows service

We find glory in a lot of things: accomplishments, possessions, family. How do we find glory in the Cross of Christ? Pastor Ray Smith will explore this question at the La Grande First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) during the 10 a.m. service. The message is from Galatians 6:1-10 and 14-16.

All are invited to a no-host lunch at the Smokehouse Restaurant at 11:45 a.m.

Zion Lutheran hosts potluck Seder

Zion Lutheran Church in La Grande will worship at 9:30 a.m. with Pastor Colleen Nelson. Sunday school for children is available during the sermon. Fellowship and fair trade coffee follow the service.

On Tuesday, the Quilters group meets at the church at 9 a.m. to make quilts for

Lutheran World Relief. At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, the StudentWorshipArtTeam will meet at the church.

The Wednesday dinner will be a potluck Seder. The gathering begins at 5:30 p.m.

Water is metaphor for eternal life

Pastor Phil Garwood will be unpacking the text of John 4:1-42 at the 11 a.m. worship service at Grace Bible Church in La Grande. This passage tells the story of Jesus’s encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus compassionately explains to her that the “water” he gives will become a spring of water welling up to eternal life. Bible study is offered at 9:30 a.m. before the service.

For youth and older, a biblical worldview thinking class is offered each Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Congregation says good-bye to Hurd

On the fifth Sunday in Lent, the La Grande United Methodist Church will gather together at 10 a.m. for worship. Child care is available. Following the service, there will be a special fellowship coffee hour to say good-bye to Nancy Hurd.

NE Oregon Colloquy meets at Cove

COVE – Mike Lamb will be the leader of the 9 a.m. service at the Cove Methodist Church. This Sunday is Communion Sunday and all are welcome at the Communion table.

The church hosts the Fresh Food Alliance every Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Food Pantry is on the third Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to noon.

On Monday, March 14, the NE Oregon Colloquy will meet at the church. The lunch will be Brown Bag with dessert and drinks provided.

Parable reveals habit of rejection

Luke 20:9-10 will be the focus of the message during the 11 a.m. service at Faith Lutheran Church in

La Grande. These verses tell the parable of the wicked tenants, which reveals how rejection can become a habit.

Wednesday will be the final Midweek Lenten Service at Faith Lutheran. A soup supper begins at 6 p.m. and the service is at 7 p.m. This week the lesson will consider the “Passion of the Trial – A Place of Rejection.”

Christ’s death has power to transform

Saturday’s 11 a.m. service at the La Grande Seventh-day Adventist Church Pastor Mike’s message will highlight how the death of Christ some 2,000 years ago can directly transform lives and short-circuit the “life is all about me” attitude. The service will also include a children’s story and worship in song.

Pastor declares ‘All for Christ’

COVE – Grace Community Lutheran Church in La Grande will celebrate the fifth Sunday of Lent with a worship service beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Carl Seelhoff’s sermon, “All for Christ,” is drawn from Philippians 3. Adult Sunday school is held starting at 9 a.m. Fellowship follows the service.

A men’s Bible study and breakfast meets every Thursday at 7:30 a.m. Transportation is available for all activities.
