HIGHLIGHTS: Monthly soup supper open to community

ELGIN – Beginning tonight, the Elgin United Methodist Church will be having a soup supper the last Friday of each month from
5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
All community members are invited to participate each month. Tonight’s meal will feature Kay Durham’s famous vegetable soup along with biscuits and dessert.
Fellowship includes study on Mary
Pastor Ray Smith’s message at the La Grande First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 10 a.m. service will be “Getting Out of the Boat,” with reference to Matthew 14:22-33. He will explore the question, “How does Jesus help us get out of the boat?”
The Christian Women’s Fellowship will meet on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. The program will include a study on Mary, the mother of Jesus, and accepting our gifts.
Lauri DeLainey, from the local Next Step program, will also make a short presentation about the work they do. A potluck lunch will follow the meeting.
Message focuses on building a community
Pastor Phil Garwood will be pausing from the New Testament study of John to return to the Old Testament’s Judges 6 at the 11 a.m. worship service at Grace Bible Church in La Grande. “Building a Community in Christ,” a study in Ephesians, is the focus of the 9:30 a.m. Sunday school.
The biblical worldview thinking class held each Thursday evening will recess until next September.
Quilters group prepares Disaster Relief donation
Zion Lutheran Church in La Grande will worship at 9:30 a.m. Sunday school for children is offered during the sermon. Fellowship and Fair Trade Coffee follows.
Tuesday at 9 a.m. the Quilters will meet to work on quilts for Disaster Relief. That evening at 6:30 p.m., the StudentWorshipArtTeam will meet at the church. PFLAG will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday in the fellowship hall.
Message examines ‘The Gift of Love’
The La Grande United Methodist Church will celebrate the sixth Sunday of Easter with Communion. The sermon title is “The Gift of Love.” The service begins at 10 a.m. with coffee hour to follow.
St. Peter’s hosts K House dinner
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in La Grande will observe the sixth Sunday of Easter with Holy Eucharist at 9 a.m. The Rev. Kathryn Macek will preside and preach.
St. Peter’s will host the EOU Koinonia House dinner Thursday. Anyone who can help should call Kathy Thew at 541-568-4713.
Centering Prayer is offered Tuesdays and Morning Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer is offered Thursdays. Both services begin at 8:30 a.m. in the chapel. A midweek Eucharist is offered Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m., also in the chapel.
Memorial Day Luncheon under way
COVE – The 9 a.m. service at the Cove United Methodist Church will welcome Sue Peeples as the guest lay speaker assisted by Vickie Hill Brown as liturgist for the sixth Sunday after Easter. Following the service is a coffee hour in the Fellowship Hall.
The church hosts Fresh Food Alliance Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the Food Pantry is from 9 a.m. to noon the third Saturday of the month.
The Bible study is on a summer hiatus and will resume in the fall.
The church is planning the annual Memorial Day Luncheon, which will take place May 30 from 11:30 a.m. to
1 p.m. The event is a time for lunch, visiting and enjoyinghomemade pie.
Potluck and meeting follows service
The sermon at the 10 a.m. service at Faith Lutheran Church in La Grande will expound on the concept of asking of the Triune God in Jesus’ name. The message will be drawn from John 16, in which Jesus is preparing His disciples for His impending departure. A name is more than just letters and phonetic sounds.
After the Divine Service is Faith’s monthly potluck with the elders’ meeting following the potluck.
Jim Lundy is guest speaker Sunday
Jim Lundy will speak at the La Grande Church of Christ this Sunday in place of Doug Edmonds.
Communion is taken every Sunday. Sunday morning classes for all ages begin at 9:30 a.m., and the worship service follows at 10:30 a.m. “Kingdom Kids” is offered during the sermon for children age 2 through kindergarten.
On Wednesday nights the congregants meet for small groups at various homes.
For additional Bible study during the week, Pastor Doug recommends the free online World Bible School and suggests watching “Getting to Know Your Bible” on DTV channel 377 at 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Sermon is based on John and Revelation
The sixth Sunday of Easter will be celebrated during the 9:30 a.m. worship service at the First Presbyterian Church in La Grande. The sermon, “No More Night,” is based on John 14:23-29 and Revelation 21:22-25.
The N.T. Wright study of Revelation continues Wednesday at 5 p.m.
