SPIRITUAL HIGHLIGHTS: Sermons expounds on Book of Luke

The 23rd Sunday after Pentecost will be celebrated during the 9:30 a.m. worship service at the First Presbyterian Church in La Grande. The sermon, “Extravagant Welcome,” will be based on Luke 15:1-32. Fellowship will follow the service.

The Wednesday Night Community Fellowship Dinner will be at 6 p.m.

Services offered throughout the week

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in La Grande will observe the 23rd Sunday after Pentecost with Holy Eucharist at 9 a.m. The Rev. Kathryn Macek will preside and preach.

At 8:30 a.m. in the chapel, Centering Prayer will be offered on Tuesday and Morning Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer will be offered on Thursday. A midweek Eucharist will be offered Wednesday at 12:15 p.m., also in the chapel.

Blessing takes place over kits, quilts

Zion Lutheran Church in La Grande will worship at 9:30 a.m. with Pastor Colleen Nelson.

There will be a blessing of the quilts and kits that will be sent to Lutheran World Relief for global use. Sunday school for children is offered during the sermon. Fellowship and fair trade coffee follows the service.

Monday at 6 p.m. SWAT will meet, and at 7 p.m. Neighbors Together will meet. At 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday the ZLCW Bible study will be held at the church.

Let God deal with sin

Doug Edmonds will speak at the La Grande Church of Christ on a series from the letter of James. The message, “Judgment Against Rich Oppressors,” teaches that God will discipline the wealthy or powerful who oppress those under them in social status.

The worship service, including Communion, begins at 10:30 a.m., with Kingdom Kids being offered during the sermon for children age 2 through kindergarten. Classes for all ages are held before the service, at 9:30 a.m.

Wednesday night is small groups at various homes.

For Bible study at home, the pastor suggests the free online World Bible School. Also watch “Getting to Know Your Bible,” DTV channel 377, Monday through Friday at 7 p.m.

Sermon focuses on pride, humility

LA GRANDE, ENTERPRISE — The sermon at Faith Lutheran Church will expound on Luke 18: 9-17, in which Jesus shared a parable that emphasizes the problems of boastful pride and the benefits of humility, teaching that we are to trust in God’s mercy for righteousness.

The service will begin at 10 a.m. in La Grande and 2 p.m. in Enterprise.

Bunco Night enjoyed on Friday

“Have I Got a Deal for You” is the message Pastor Ray Smith will share at the La Grande First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at 10 a.m. He will speak on Christian stewardship, referencing the story of the rich young ruler in Mark 10:17-30.

Bunco Night will be offered on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Participants are asked to bring finger foods and to sign up in the church office or by calling 541-963-2623 before Friday.

Guest speaker delivers message

The La Grande Seventh-day Adventist Church will worship at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The guest speaker will be Dennis Clayville, who owns Nature’s Pantry with his wife, Linda.

Dennis is one of the church leaders and will present a relevant Biblical message for the times in which we live.

Annual Harvest Party offered to community

ISLAND CITY — The Faith Center in Island City will be holding its annual Harvest Party, which is open to the community, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 31.

The event includes free carnival games, prizes, a cake walk and lots of candy. Family-friendly, non-scary costumes are welcomed.
