It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Market Place Underground.
The lower level of the Market Place in New Town Square is nearly filled to the brim with decorations and gift items for the annual Potter’s Gift House holiday extravaganza.
Bob and Judy Jensen, Potter’s House owners, live in the front part of the house that doubles as their business on Sixth Street in La Grande.
In the past, the Jensens have moved out of their home to make room for the Potter’s Gift House holiday offerings. This year they are staying home and instead have moved their holiday inventory to the Market Place Underground at 1101 Washington Ave., where 15 rooms give them ample space.
“We are wonderfully spread out,” Judy said. “Instead of a Christmas house, we have a Christmas marketplace.”
Judy said it’s one room after another, with each room having its own specific theme.
The Potter’s Gift House technically opens today in their temporary holiday location, but the grand opening will be Thursday and continuing through Saturday. Termed the Christmas Market Place, the Underground will be open six days a week through November, and then it will be open every day in December, Judy said.
The couple is excited about this new location. There will be artists giving demonstrations of their artwork in viewing rooms during the holidays.
“Besides Bob, who is the potter, we have four other artists who are coming to work in our demonstration rooms. We have at least two potters who will be working, and two 2D kinds of art,” Judy said.
She said this was the vision they had for their holiday market in the expanded space. They are planning to have artists working throughout the day so any time customers come in they can watch the process.
This is the 18th year the Jensens have put on the Christmas store, she said. Her customers have said how much they look forward to it every year.
“We have the largest Christmas selection between Portland and Salt Lake City,” she said. “We’ll have more than 80 Christmas trees decorated when the store officially opens.”
The Potter’s Gift House invites adults in the community to come to the store at 5 p.m. Thursday and enjoy hors d’oeuvres and holiday treats — and start shopping for loved ones.
There will be carolers performing every weekend in the store, Judy said.
