La Grande temperature record tied Thursday morning

A record was tied in La Grande Thursday morning when the temperature fell to 9 degrees below zero.
The mark tied the all time record low for Jan. 5 in La Grande, one first set in 2004, according to Mike Murphy, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Pendleton.
Thursday’s temperature was the eighth lowest on record in La Grande for January. The all-time low for January is minus-17 degrees, a mark set Jan. 31, 1996, according to National Weather Service records going back to 1965.
La Grande’s all time low is minus-18, a mark recorded on Dec. 23, 1983.
La Grande was not the coldest spot in Union or Wallowa counties Thursday morning. The temperature reached minus-21 in Wallowa and minus-11 in Cove and at the Joseph Airport, according to the National Weather Service.
Baker County also experienced record-breaking temperatures Thursday, plunging to minus-24 at the Baker City Airport.
The temperatures set a new record for Jan. 5 and was the coldest day at the airport in more than 26 years. The airport hasn’t been colder since Dec. 22, 1990, when the low was 25 below zero.
The previous record low for Jan. 5 was minus- 22, set in 1950.
