Dema Reel, 89, of Enterprise, died Jan. 19 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 4 at Bollman Funeral Home. An obituary will be published at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Bollman Funeral Home.

Roger B. Morin

Formerly of Union

1950-2016

Roger Brian Morin, 66, of Baker City and formerly of Union, died Dec. 11, 2016, in Baker City. A memorial service will be held in the spring.

Roger was born Nov. 21, 1950, in Baker City, to Peirce and Helen (Fisher) Morin. When he was six years old, he moved to Lakeview, where he and his family resided for 10 years. They returned to Baker City when his father retired from BLM.

Roger attended schools in Lakeview, South Ogden, Utah, and Baker City. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Roger proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1970 to 1974 on the USS Midway, making two tours to Vietnam. In August 1971, Roger became a father with the birth of his daughter, Tonya Sherise Morin, from his first marriage.

Roger continued his education and became a nurse. While working at St. Elizabeth Hospital, he met Robin M. Hull. They were married on July 15, 2001. Robin preceded him in death on July 22, 2016. Roger was forced into an early retirement due to the physical manifestations of contact with Agent Orange while serving his country in Vietnam.

According to his family, Roger was a gifted pianist, had a great sense of humor, was a compassionate nurse and had a love and respect for nature and all animals.

Survivors include his daughter Tonya of Kenai. Alaska; one grandson; brother, Gerald Morin of Whittier, California; sisters, Vivian Haag of Pleasant View, Utah, and Virginia Morin of Ontario; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kaarisa Karlten

La Grande

1959-2017

Kaarisa Karlten, 57, of La Grande, died Jan. 12 battling breast cancer at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, Washington. Memorial celebrations will be held at 3 p.m. Jan. 28 at Fauntleroy Church in West Seattle, and at 3 p.m. Feb. 4 at La Grande’s Market Place, 1101 Washington Ave.

Kaarisa was born Keitheen Ione Nichols on Jan. 28, 1959, in Seattle, Washington, the middle child of five, to Keith and Thomasine Nichols. She graduated from West Seattle High School and studied interior design at Bellevue College. She used her education in many creative endeavors, from interior design to painting, drawing and murals.

At the age of 50, tired of her name being mispronounced, she decided to change her legal name to Kaarisa Karlten.

In Washington, Kaarisa lived in Seattle, Sequim and Port Angeles. She moved to La Grande in 2003 where she channeled her artistic talents with her husband, Wyatt Williams, in their custom metal work business, Williams and Karlten Design and Fabrication. Their work can be seen at many businesses in La Grande and the surrounding area.

According to her family, Kaarisa believed in always leaving a place better than you found it, and her life is a legacy of that belief. She had a vibrant personality and lived life to the fullest as her truest self.

Survivors include her husband, Wyatt Williams; children: Holli Margell, Hance Edwards and Hannah Jane Winn; stepchildren, Garrett Williams and Kasey Lathrop, three grandchildren; brothers, Stephen Nichols and Michael Nichols; and sister, Heidi Henry.
