KLAMATH FALLS — A Klamath Falls man accused of gunning down a woman Sept. 9 on a bike trail has pleaded not guilty after being indicted last week by a grand jury.

Brittain James McAuliffe, 19, pleaded not guilty Monday to attempted murder, first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon (two counts) for allegedly shooting the victim on a trail in Klamath Falls.

McAuliffe remains held on $1 million bail and a hearing is scheduled for Sept. 26 to consider a bail reduction.

McAuliffe is accused of shooting the victim twice with a 12-gauge, sawed-off shotgun and leaving her for dead. The victim suffered significant injuries to her face and torso and remained hospitalized Monday at Oregon Health and Science University, in Portland.

During court Monday, McAuliffe claimed the victim regained consciousness and made a statement that he was not the shooter. This did not impact court proceedings nor prompt a response from the prosecution or the defense.

Klamath County District Attorney Eve Costello could not be reached prior to confirm the accuracy of McAuliffe’s claim.

At the time of the shooting, McAuliffe was wanted for escaping June 20 from Camp Riverbend Youth Transitional Facility, in La Grande. He was serving a sentence through Oregon Youth Authority for second-degree escape, resisting arrest and second-degree criminal mischief.
