Bernice A. ‘Bea’ (Bumgardner) Page
La Grande
1916-2019
Bernice Arlene Page, 102, of La Grande, died March 18 at Grande Ronde Hospital of natural causes after a short bout with the flu. Bernice wished for her family and friends to have a joyful gathering in her honor with lunch and cake. The time and date of a celebration of her life, which will be held at the Union County Senior Center sometime in May, will be announced.
Bernice was born July 22, 1916, on Cricket Flats just outside Elgin, to Isaac Pollard and Emma (Davisson) Bumgardner. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1934. Bernice married Bill Page and had three children: Shelley, Tim and Jerry.
Bernice’s hobbies included reading, gardening, baking and traveling with friends and family. Her first hourly wage job was as a telephone operator in Elgin, and her second job as a teller for the U.S. Bank became a lifelong career. She worked at the Elgin branch for the first two years and then at the La Grande branch until she retired at age 65. The name on her window at the bank and the name most of our community knew her by was simply “Bea.”
Bea was active in many social and community organizations over the course of her life, taking part in charity events and social activities. As a long-standing member of the Eagles and the Eagles Auxiliary, she enjoyed participating in events such as Friday and Saturday night dances where she was known as “Little Feather,” stage performances and holiday parties. As an active Eastern Star member, Bea was recognized for her significant participation in fundraising events for various organizations involved with the order.
Upon retirement from the bank, Bea joined the Grande Ronde Hospital Auxiliary and became a volunteer “Pink Lady.” She was a common sight in the hallways of the hospital for the next 30 years as she delivered coffee, newspapers and directed visitors.
Survivors include her daughter, Shelley; sons, Tim and Jerry; and a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, and siblings, Helen and Albert.
