Cove’s Summer Reading Program begins Tuesday
COVE — The Cove Library’s Summer Reading Program begins at 11 a.m. June 11. This year’s summer program focuses on the universe, stars and planets and will offer lots of fun activities and interesting information. Children are invited to the library at 11 a.m. on Tuesdays until Aug. 6. For more information, call Donna at 541-568-4230.
Parks & Rec commissions meet this week
LA GRANDE — The Community Landscape & Forestry Commission meets June 11 and the La Grande Arts Commission meets June 12. New commissioners are needed for both these commissions. On June 13, the Parks & Recreation Advisory Commission meets. Each meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Parks & Recreation offices inside Pioneer Park.

Cove City Council meets tomorrow
COVE — The City of Cove will hold its regular council meeting on June 11. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Cove City Hall, 504 Alder.
Landing Hotel and Dining holds open house
LA GRANDE — An official opening, ribbon-cutting and “Entrepreneur Meet and Greet” at the Landing Hotel and Dining in La Grande is planned for 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. June 12. Stop by 1501 Adams Ave. for food samples, tours of the hotel, and conversation with the people behind the scenes of the facility.
County weed tour set for Thursday
LA GRANDE — The Union County Weed Board and Union County Commissioners will be going on a weed tour of the south end of Union County from 8:30 a.m. to noon June 13. The tour begins and ends at the Union County Courthouse, 1106 K Ave., La Grande. Contact Union County Weed Supervisor Brian Clapp for more information at 541-805-5399.
Excursion Train announces new schedule
ELGIN — The Friends of the Joseph Branch announced reservations can now be made for the 2019 Eagle Cap Excursion Train revised June schedule. In June, two rides are scheduled to help honor fathers and families over Father’s Day weekend, with trains departing from the Elgin Depot at 10 a.m. June 15 and June 16. Both rides have the added excitement of robberies by the Gold Rush Bandits.
On June 22, the Summer Solstice Dinner Train leaves the depot at 5 p.m. for a rare evening ride, complete with dinner and adult beverage of choice. The train will return to the depot in Elgin at about 8:30 p.m. This trip is catered by Chuckwagon Sisters of Joseph.
The Veterans’ Train will leave the Elgin Depot at 10 a.m. June 29. This ride is free to veterans and active military personnel and each may bring one guest. Lunch is included, with the train returning to Elgin at 1:30 p.m. The Friends thank Anderson Perry & Associates for their continued support for this event. Businesses are invited to help sponsor this ride and show appreciation for those who serve our country. Minam Campground will be closed June 14-15
ELGIN — The campground at Minam State Recreation Area, near Elgin, will be closed June 14-15 while contractors perform construction work on the park’s campground road to repair the effects of weather and heavy use. The 22-site campground is expected to reopen by 6 p.m. June 15. Park rangers are asking campers to vacate the campground by 4 p.m. June 13 to accommodate the construction work. Campers can move back into the campground any time after 6 p.m. June 15. Campers planning a trip to the area can choose from several other local camping options during the closure, including Wallowa Valley Stay N Wash, Wallowa River RV Park and Hu-Na-ha RV Park.
LHS Class of 1974 plans reunion
LA GRANDE — The La Grande High School Class of 1974 will have its 45th reunion Aug. 2-3. Classmates from out of town are encouraged to make their motel reservations as soon as possible, as it will be a busy weekend in La Grande, including the Union County Fair and a baseball tournament.
The registration fee, to help cover events and supplies, is $40 per person and may be mailed to Jakki Berg, 66905 Market Lane, Cove 97824.
The reunion’s events include a get-together on Friday after the fair parade, around 6:30 p.m., at Bud Jackson’s.
On Saturday there will be a catered dinner and activities beginning at 4 p.m. at the White Barn on Hunter Road. For more details, join the LHS Class of 74 Facebook group.
