Outlaws sweep races at Scamper

Domination on the trails led to victories on both the boys and girls side — individually and as a team — by the Wallowa Valley cross country teams at the Catherine Creek Scamper Friday.
Henry Coughlan jumped from fifth place to first place during the trail run on the way to an easy individual win as three Outlaw runners finished in the top 10 to lift the team to first.
Meanwhile, Ellyse Tingelstad bounced back from a pair of wipeouts in the course’s infamous mud pit to win the girls race and help boost the Outlaw girls to a team victory, just ahead of the host Union/Cove Bobcats.
The number of boys competing Friday — 130 ran at the varsity level — forced the race to be split into two groups, with each school’s 1-3 runners in one race, the second flight, and 4-7 runners in another, the first flight.
Wallowa Valley cruised in both, led by Coughlan’s 20-second win in the second flight in a time of 17:11.
“I tried to establish a position to where I felt I (could) continue to surge and stay in good shape through the whole race,” Coughlan said.
Coughlan attacked the hills in the trail run, coming down well in front on his way to the win.
“What I tried to do was surge on the hills and lay back on the downhill and try to pull away,” he said.
He bested Baker’s Kale Cassidy, who was second. Outlaws’ teammate Zac Knapp was third at 17:45, and Bayden Menton snuck into the top 10 in ninth at 18:16.
Knapp was also well behind before gaining ground in the hills.
“I don’t go too fast at the beginning because that’s not my style, so I was way back. As soon as I got to the hill, I said, ‘I gotta go now,’” he said. “It’s been that way since I started cross country, to start slow and then just pick them off.”
All four Wallowa Valley runners in the first flight were in the top 10, including second-place John Matthews (19:51) and fifth-place Brenden Moore (20:04). The Outlaws scored 23 points in the first flight and 13 in the second.
Union/Cove was second in the second flight (23 points) and third in the first flight (32). Like Wallowa Valley, all three Bobcats in the second race made the top 10. Israel O’Reilly led the way in fifth place at 18:06, Taylor Fox was eighth at 18:15, and Andrew Lackey inched into 10th at 18:17. The sixth through 11th place runners were separated by a total of seven seconds.
The top two Bobcats in the first flight were third-place Carter Blackburn (19:52) and fourth-place Monte Kirby (19:58).
The La Grande Tigers were fifth in the second flight and seventh in the first, with 57 and 115 points, respectively. Cristian Mendoza cracked the top 10, placing seventh at 18:14. Braxton Bisenius came in 21st at 20:06, and Donald Sweet was 29th at 20:48.
In the first flight, Garrett Street was 21st at 22:05, and Connor Heather was 35th in 23:17.
Kaden McClure led Elgin by taking 43rd in the second-flight race in 21:38, just ahead of teammate Kevin Anderson, who was 47th in 21:52.
Noble Craig was 33rd in the first-flight race in 23:06 to finish with the third-best time for the Huskies.
On the girls side, Tingelstad’s performance — the senior finished the race in 21:40 — proved key in helping Wallowa Valley fend off Union/Cove. The Outlaws finished with 72 points, while the Bobcats had 77 and third-place Baker scored 86.
Though she led throughout the race, Tingelstad — like the Outlaw boys — gained some breathing room on the trail.
“That’s my strength, and I love it in those hills,” she said, adding her mindset attacking the hills is “this might hurt, but (I) just gotta make it hurt less than the other girls, and just push through.”
She finished six seconds ahead of runner-up Sydney Keller of Baker, and 10 seconds in front of Union/Cove’s Jaimee Baxter, who took third.
“I was right on Ellyse’s heels going up the hill, feeling pretty good. Coming back I fell asleep a little bit,” Baxter said.
Tingelstad said Baxter, a senior for the Bobcats, challenges her to perform well.
“Both races (this season) Jaimee has been right on my shoulder, and in our district she’s a very competitive rival. On the course she just pushes me and it’s really awesome.”
Teammate Kyla Hook followed in ninth with a time of 22:51. Lucrezia Curcio (24:42, 26th place), Mary Catherine Matthews (24:52, 29th) and Sydney Rouse (25:08, 35th) rounded out the Outlaws’ top five.
For Baxter, the reality of it being her final time running the Scamper set in following the conclusion.
“This is definitely my favorite race. I love this race,” she said, briefly fighting back tears. “Union and Cove cross country is a family. Our coaches don’t just coach us during season. They’re definitely some examples in my life.”
Baxter was the lone Bobcat in the top 10, but three additional runners were in the top 30. Audrey Wells placed 17th for Union/Cove in 24:03, followed by Kaitlin Martens (24:32, 23rd) and Danielle O’Reilly (24:56, 30th). Audrey Hill, at 25:14, came in 37th.
Jacki Martini was seventh — and the lone La Grande Tiger in the top 20 — as La Grande placed sixth with 130 points. Corbyn Sexton placed 21st in 24:24. Also in the top 50 for La Grande were Gladys Alf Rippee (25:10, 36th) and Delia Gulzow (26:14, 50th).
Elgin put two runners in the top 25, as Jocelyn Palmer came in 18th in 24:07, and Anika Jacobson was 22nd in 24:26.
Wallowa Valley, Union/Cove and La Grande all run at the Bob Firman Invitational Friday in Eagle, Idaho, while Elgin heads to the Footrace at Valhalla Friday in Umatilla.
