Powder Valley, Joseph, Imbler and Wallowa all took part in the East-West Volleyball Classic, with the Badgers going undefeated in six best-of-three matches, and only dropping one set.

“It was a great event,” Powder Valley head coach Marji Lind said of the inaugural event, which brought in 13 other teams from across the state. “What an awesome time to host all of these schools and their fans in our new school.”

On Friday, the Badgers swept Grant Union (25-19, 25-17), 1A perennial power Country Christian (25-14, 25-21) and Perrydale (25-22, 25-22). They followed on Saturday by defeating Heppner (25-12, 25-14), getting past Damascus Christian in three sets (23-25, 25-8, 15-19) and sweeping Pilot Rock (25-10, 25-9). Individual stats were not available for the Badgers.

The Wallowa Cougars went 3-3 on the weekend. Friday, Wallowa defeated Pilot Rock (25-11, 25-19) and Grant Union (25-22, 25-15), but lost a close match to Crosshill Christian (25-23, 25-20). On Saturday, the Cougars saw an early lead slip away in a loss to Perrydale (25-23, 25-22), eked out a three-set win against Crane (28-26, 20-25, 15-11) and fell in three to Heppner (25-14, 23-25, 15-12).

“The teams that were at the tournament are very good teams with high rankings that I am sure will be contenders at state,” Wallowa head coach Janea Hulse said. “I felt like we played well against these teams.”

The Joseph Eagles went 2-5, losing on Friday to County Christian (25-12, 25-22) and to Crosshill Christian (18-25, 25-17, 15-12) before beating Adrian (25-23, 24-26, 15-10). On Saturday, the Eagles lost to Jordan Valley (22-25, 25-22, 16-14), defeated Heppner (22-25, 25-21, 15-12), and lost to Grant Union (25-21, 19-25, 18-16)

For the tournament, Sabrina Albee led the Eagles with 32 kills, seven aces and five blocks. Camille Crenshaw tallied 10 kills and four aces, and Molly Curry had five kills and three blocks.

Imbler dropped its six matches. On Friday, the Panthers played close with, but fell to, Heppner (25-22, 18-25, 15-4), Crane (25-17, 25-17), Crosshill Christian (25-18, 25-20) and Country Christian (25-18, 25-19). Imbler finished play Saturday, falling to Damascus Christian (25-18, 25-19) and to Grant Union (25-21, 25-15).

Aspen Smith and Erin Coston led the Panthers’ attack with 17 and 16 kills, respectively. Allison Stirewalt served up eight aces, Anika McDonald added seven aces and 11 digs, and Coston had 10 digs. Rylee Deal had 49 assists.

Joseph (5-7 overall) hosts Wallowa (7-5) on Tuesday, while Powder Valley (15-1) hosts Imbler (5-10) on Thursday. Both are Old Oregon League contests.

Tigers win tourney in Baker

The La Grande Tigers claimed another tournament title, winning the Baker Tournament Friday by edging Burns in the championship match 17-25, 25-16, 15-9.

“It was nice to beat Burns. They’re a good squad,” head coach Melinda Becker-Bisenius said of the win over the traditional 3A volleyball power. “They’ve got some pretty impressive hitters. It was a great challenge for my team to get to play team.”

The Tigers reached the championship match after sweeping Irrigon in the semifinals of the six-team tournament, 25-10, 25-12.

In pool play, La Grande went undefeated in sweeping Ontario and Weiser.

For the tournament, Jayce Seavert recorded a team-best 27 kills and had 34 digs. Presley Justice had 18 kills, 31 digs and a team-high seven aces. Both Kenzie Williams and Jacie Howton had a strong all-around day, with Williams dishing out 36 assists, recording 13 kills and adding 19 digs, and Howton posted 32 assists, 25 digs and four aces. Felicity Houston added 34 digs in the back row, and Grace Neer had three blocks.

The Tigers (8-1 overall) begin Greater Oregon League play Tuesday on the road against McLoughlin.

Bobcats win three on west coast

The Union Bobcats picked up three victories on the west side of the state over the weekend, sweeping both Pacific and Bandon Friday and topping Reedsport in four sets Saturday.

“They played pretty strong. We worked on little things during the game,” head coach Karly Knapp said “We’re learning to read the other team (and) communicate. Overall they definitely improved over the weekend which is nice after long travel days.”

Ahnica Shoemaker had eight kills to lead the Bobcats in their 25-15, 25-9, 25-8 sweep of Pacific. Kylie Marriott and Taylar Daggett both added five kills and three aces, and Callie Glenn dished up 17 assists and seven aces. Brianna Kohr added nine digs.

Daggett led the attack later Friday in a 25-13, 25-18, 25-20 sweep of Bandon with eight kills and four aces. Marriott again added five kills, Kohr recorded 20 digs and Glenn posted 21 assists, three aces and seven digs.

On Saturday, Autumn Daggett put up 19 kills in the Bobcats’ 25-19, 25-13, 20-25, 25-16 win over Reedsport. Marriott added 15 kills, Glenn had 31 assists and Kohr racked up 35 digs and also had nine aces.

“The effort from her has been 110 percent, its huge for a libero to give the team that,” Knapp said of Kohr.

The Bobcats (8-2 overall) host Stanfield Thursday to begin Blue Mountain Conference play.

Huskies go 2-2 at tourney, fall to Cove

The Elgin Huskies went 2-2 at the Riverside Tournament on Saturday. The Huskies earned victories against the host Pirates (25-20, 19-25, 15-13) and against Stanfield (25-13, 25-21) but suffered losses to South Wasco (25-19, 25-18) and Echo (25-14, 21-25, 15-10).

Kaelin Evans had nine kills and six blocks for Elgin during the tournament. Tymra Anderson recorded 27 digs and six aces, and Jayden Palmer added seven kills.

On Friday, the Cove Leopards swept the Huskies on the road in Old Oregon League play Friday, 25-23, 25-18, 25-19.

Stats were not available.

Cove (6-2 overall, 1-1 OOL) travels to Joseph Thursday, while Elgin (4-6, 0-2) visits Griswold Tuesday.
