SALEM — Oregon health officials reported 24% more new coronavirus infections this week compared to the previous week, with about 445 known infections reported per day.
A wave of infections is expected to arrive this fall, though an Oregon Health & Science University forecast predicts that wave won’t lead to a surge in hospitalizations.
The case growth health officials reported this week coincided with an 8% increase in all COVID-19 tests reported to the state. It is virtually certain that far more people have been infected than is reflected in the numbers published by the Oregon Health Authority, given at-home tests don’t need to be reported.
In its monthly update of vaccination rates, the health authority reported more than twice as many people getting a dose of the bivalent booster as of Monday, Nov. 7, compared to a month earlier. At around 550,000 people, fewer than 1 in 5 Oregonians eligible to get the booster have done so, according to state data.
Since it began: Oregon has reported 913,809 confirmed or presumed infections and 8,743 deaths.
Hospitalizations: 229 people with confirmed coronavirus infections are hospitalized, down one since Nov. 2. That includes 28 people in intensive care, down five since Nov. 2.
Vaccinations: As of Nov. 7, the state has reported fully vaccinating 2,978,987 people, or 69.8% of the population, and partially vaccinating 322,033 people, or 7.5%. A dose of the bivalent booster, which is designed to target the BA.4 and BA.5 coronavirus strains in particular, has been given to 547,775. The Oregon Health Authority publishes updated vaccination numbers monthly, with the next release expected Dec. 14.
New deaths: Since Nov. 2, the Oregon Health Authority has reported 17 additional deaths connected to COVID-19.
